Startups, investors, corporates, governments, all in one place to explore the future of tech.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Tornado Cash is an open-source, decentralised crypto mixer that runs on Ethereum networks.<\/p>\n<p>The tool mixes a user\u2019s crypto tokens with other users\u2019 funds, making it challenging to trace the origin or destination of any particular coin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt helps people protect their privacy, which in crypto transactions is important,\u201d Geoff White, author of The Lazarus Heist, told TNW in a January interview.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, it also helped the North Koreans successfully launder stolen money.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"64_months_of_prison\"><\/span>64 months of prison<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>During Pertsev\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2024\/03\/20\/tornado-cash-dev-pertsevs-12b-money-laundering-allegations-detailed-ahead-of-dutch-trial\/?_gl=1*1ir5tur*_up*MQ..*_ga*MTM3MDk5OTk3NC4xNzE1Njg3NjU4*_ga_VM3STRYVN8*MTcxNTY4NzY2MS4xLjAuMTcxNTY4NzY2MS4wLjAuNDEwMTc5MTc.\">indictment<\/a> before his trial in March, Dutch prosecutors alleged that he committed money laundering \u201cat least\u201d in the Netherlands, and\/or Russia, the US, and Dubai during the period between July 9, 2019 and August 10, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot comprehend two things,\u201d Pertsev <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dlnews.com\/articles\/people-culture\/tornado-cash-dev-alexey-pertsev-cant-comprehend-prosecution\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CI%20cannot%20comprehend%20two%20things,as%20punishment%20of%20any%20amount.\">said<\/a> in his closing remarks during the trial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that I am responsible for abuse of Tornado Cash by someone else. The second thing is prison time as punishment of any amount. I don\u2019t see how it will help me, or anyone else, or victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, the Dutch judges refuted Pertsev\u2019s claims. The court stated that \u201c[i]t was Tornado Cash that executed the concealing and disguising activities,\u201d related to the untraceable ownership of crypto assets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen executing these activities with cryptocurrency derived from crime, Tornado Cash carries out money laundering activities. Therefore the court judges that Tornado Cash is not just an instrument for users.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The court also determined that the crypto mixer\u00a0is not a legitimate tool, but one that \u201csuits criminal use.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pertsev has now been sentenced to five years and four months in prison.<\/p>\n<p>The verdict could have a significant impact on the development of open-source software that enables anonymity on the blockchain.
