If I could sing I would know.\u2019 Then I started recording music and I was like, \u2018Hold on. Wait, I can like, <i>actually<\/i> sing.\u2019\u201d Initially a producer for artists like SoFayGo and Dom Corleone, Wolfacejoeyy (born Joseph Badejo) started rapping when the SoundCloud scene grew stale and unexciting. But underground rap wasn\u2019t what Mama Joeyy wanted to hear from her son: \u201cShe always told me, \u2018You have to make music that people can dance to.\u2019 And at first I was like, \u2018Man, I&#8217;m trying to be the next Carti! Leave me alone,\u2019\u201d he laughs. But the idea eventually stuck. \u201cWhen \u2018SHAKE IT\u2019 came out and I played it for her, she was like, \u2018See? I told you!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Originally an On The Radar freestyle, \u201cSHAKE IT\u201d blended Joeyy\u2019s delicately melodic flow with an insistent club beat courtesy of producer Whereis22, a.k.a. fellow Staten Islander Michael Rainey Jr. (best known as Tariq from <i>Power<\/i>). The duo took this formula and ran with it on 2023\u2019s <i>22Joeyy<\/i>, which Joeyy describes as \u201can evolved version\u201d of the same sound. On that nine-song EP, the raw materials of Joeyy\u2019s music were coming into focus: not just the penchant for PG-13 sleaze, but the melodies and vocal control. Although you can hear fragments of plugg and trap in some of his older work, like 2022\u2019s <i>all your fault<\/i>, <i>22Joeyy<\/i> fully embraced the sound of sexy drill; when founding fathers Cash Cobain and Chow Lee show up on \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fcT-z922Ts0&amp;pp=ygUMd29sZmFjZWpvZXl5\">Weekend<\/a>,\u201d it feels like mutual acknowledgment.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261754\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"wolfacejoeyy - SHAKE IT (Official Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8doiwNdjCAE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('261754');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261723\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Wolfacejoeyy is more than aware of how the success of Cobain and Lee\u2019s <i>2 SLIZZY 2 SEXY<\/i> paved the way for the scene\u2019s current crop of rising stars, but <i>Valentino<\/i> should put those comparisons to rest off sheer quality alone. Although deeply indebted to nightlife and clearly designed to make you dance, <i>Valentino<\/i> carries a tenderness at its core that helps to soften Wolfacejoeyy\u2019s fuckboy antics. Yes, he wants your girlfriend, but he\u2019s going to swaddle her in Hermes before he takes her home. And where previous EPs relied more heavily on his rapping, <i>Valentino<\/i> spotlights his buttery vocals, closer to a pop or R&amp;B record than an album by Drake or Cash.<\/p>\n<p>            Joeyy levitates over a gentle PoWR Trav and Whereis22 beat on \u201cI know\u201d and tells a true story about running into a girl who ghosted him on \u201cstop <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>pin bout girls u don\u2019t know;\u201d his voice rockets through a meteor shower of glissandos on \u201cTOUCH THE MOON\u201d and cascades over the dreamy \u201cdon\u2019t be dishonest.\u201d Two of my favorite moments are the chirp of fingers slipping across guitar strings on \u201cfacetime interlude\u201d and the fragments of studio audio and piano chords that close out \u201ctiffany,\u201d instances where the literal work of making music becomes apparent. Despite the album\u2019s upbeat BPM, songs like \u201cwya\u201d hone in on internal emotions rather than external expression \u2014 we don\u2019t get a mindless banger (the McVertt co-production \u201cDouble Tap\u201d) until the LP is almost over. Instead, <i>Valentino<\/i> treats the club as a stage for romantic melodrama, deftly burrowing into the nuances of situationships and significant others. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The FADER caught up with Wolfacejoeyy at the start of May, right after Kendrick Lamar and Drake\u2019s beef exploded (\u201cThis is rap music, this is what it\u2019s about!\u201d). I&#8217;ve had the idea for a couple of years though, like the name and what the album art was going to be like.<\/p>\n<p>            I initially wanted <i>Valentino<\/i> to be an EP. This is my longest project that I&#8217;ve ever worked on, because all my other projects are like, eight, seven, nine songs. So this one I wanted to really challenge myself, and my team really pushed me \u2014 they were like, \u201cYo, let&#8217;s try and make this feel like a full blown project.\u201d So the idea just slowly evolved into a whole album and building the world behind it. And I feel like now it&#8217;s just the perfect time, especially with me making sexy drill, it just <i>fit<\/i>, it just went hand in hand with what the album was gonna sound like.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>How was your approach to this album different compared to your EPs?<\/b><\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The sonics in itself are way more consistent. I am pretty vulnerable, especially when it comes to songs, but on this album, I went more in detail. The first song [\u201cstop trippin bout girls u dont know\u201d] is a true story. And I just put it down in a song. I never normally do that \u2014 normally I&#8217;m just making up stuff, pulling [inspiration] from a very deep place in my heart. I feel like that&#8217;s like the most perfect mixtape of all time. So I&#8217;ve always wanted to make my own version of that [and] I think I&#8217;m pretty close with this one.<\/p>\n<p>            I really try my best to make my projects as flawless as possible. Because a lot of my favorite albums are flawless, head to toe, whether we&#8217;re talking about <i>Rodeo<\/i> or <i>ASTROWORLD<\/i> or <i>Igor<\/i> or <i>A Love Letter To You 3<\/i> or <i>Blonde<\/i>, those albums where you just listen to every single song and feel like it&#8217;s not getting boring at any point. So I always try my best to really go into [recording a project] trying my best to make it as seamless as possible, so everyone can listen to it from top to bottom.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            <b>Your rap name actually comes from <i>Wolf<\/i> by Tyler, the Creator, right? Can you break that down for me?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            So obviously Wolf came from Tyler, [but] Ace also came from Tyler. A lot of people don\u2019t know that his name was Ace the Creator at one point. I wanted \u201cAce\u201d in my name [because] ace means perfect and I wanted everything I did to be perfect. <\/p>\n<p>            And then Joey, my name. I grew up with [and] I went to school around a bunch of Italian people. So my teachers were all Italian. So when I would say, \u201cOh, my name is Joseph,\u201d they&#8217;d be like, \u201cOh! Joey!\u201d And then the name kind of stuck and everybody started calling me Joey. [Wolfacejoeyy] was really my Instagram handle at first but it slowly grew into a producer name and then an actual artist name.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261728\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <b>Did you grow up with some musical training? <\/b><\/p>\n<p>            Nah. I mean, when I was living in Nigeria, I was in the band. I played the bass drum. It was cool, but I don&#8217;t really think it helped the way I&#8217;ve made music now. I really just joined the band because all my friends were in the band. You know how cool it is to be on the football team here in America? If you&#8217;re in the band in Nigeria, it\u2019s lowkey the same thing. You get cool points for it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            But it was fun, I liked being in the band. But other than that no, I really don&#8217;t have any formal musical training. When I was younger, my mom did try and put me in a music school. And I went there for like one week and was like, \u2018Nah, not doing anymore.\u2019 She still rips me for that to this day. She&#8217;s like, \u201cLook at you. I tried to put you in a music school and you left. Now you&#8217;re making music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <b>I&#8217;ll tell you straight up, and you can tell your mom: you sound like somebody who&#8217;s been in choir or been playing an instrument of some kind for a second. You definitely have a crazy ear and vocal tone.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            That&#8217;s been something that&#8217;s grown over time. What&#8217;s the word?\u201d I\u2019d text and be like, \u201cYo, we pulling up,\u201d he&#8217;d be like, \u201cBet.\u201d We go there [and] bowl \u2018til like 3 in the morning. It was crazy, bruh.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>Slizzy Bowling League [laughs]. What are you bowling? I have my bad days, but a lot of them are pretty good. <\/p>\n<p>            <b>On the album, you say, \u201cshe like \u2018boy you not 21. how the fuck you getting in the club?\u2019\u201d When was the first time you went to the club? <\/b><\/p>\n<p>            It&#8217;s funny, because that line, I actually recorded that song in October and I wasn&#8217;t 21 yet \u2014 I&#8217;m 21 now. But, like I said, a lot of the stuff I said on this project is super true. So it was 22\u2019s birthday, we went to three different spots and they had to play my shit [at each spot]. [First] we went to this little event because his manager had invited us. They didn&#8217;t even check my ID, they just like, dragged me in. I was like, \u201cokay, bet,\u201d played my song. Then we went to Harbor. One of 22\u2019s friends, we kind of look alike. So he gave me his ID to show to the guy so I could get in. And I get in and we&#8217;re there for, like, 10 minutes, and they start playing my song. I turned to him and I&#8217;m like, \u201cBro, isn&#8217;t it crazy?\u201d I&#8217;m in the club. I&#8217;m not 21. And they&#8217;re playing my shit. Like, it&#8217;s fucking insane.
