Look closer, however, and you\u2019ll notice it has both wings and two forward-facing rotors. This means it can take-off vertically like a helicopter, and fly fast like a plane \u2014 real fast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racer can reach speeds in excess of 400 km\/h. That eclipses civilian helicopters, which cruise at around 200 km\/h. Back in 2013, this experimental aircraft broke the speed record for a helicopter by reaching 472 km\/h.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racer aims to take this so-called compound formula closer to commercialisation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sorry_but_speed_isnt_everything\"><\/span><b>Sorry, but speed isn\u2019t everything<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSpeed at any price, without taking into account the economic and environmental impact, is of no interest to anyone,\u201d said Julien Guitton, who headed up the Racer\u2019s development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racer was launched under the European <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.clean-aviation.eu\/clean-sky-2\/programme-overview-and-structure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean Sky 2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programme which encourages the development of lower-emission air transport. Under the initiative Racer had to demonstrate a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared with a conventional aircraft of the same weight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Racer ended up meeting these targets, Airbus said following the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airbus.com\/en\/newsroom\/stories\/2024-05-the-racer-is-a-real-winner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first test flights in April<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By providing 40% of the total lift, Racer\u2019s wing takes the load off the rotor, reducing dynamic loads and vibrations. Airbus also says it will be more comfortable than a conventional helicopter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yesterday\u2019s flight demonstration took place at Airbus Helicopters\u2019 base at Marignane, southern France. Some 150 industry executives, politicians and representatives from the European Union were in attendance,<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/airbus-unveils-half-plane-half-copter-quest-speed-2024-05-15\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, Racer remains a demonstrator aircraft \u2014 albeit one that cost \u20ac200mn to build. However, if Airbus attracts enough interest from potential buyers, who knows, it might just go on sale one day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking of super-fast choppers, US-based <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bell Helicopter is currently developing a tilt-rotor aircraft for the United States Army that has a top speed of 556 km\/h. Called the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bellflight.com\/products\/bell-v-280\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bell V-280 Valor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, its rotors can face down during vertical take-off and then pivot to face forward to fly almost like a plane.
