I just know it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p>During Google I\/O, Alphabet\/Google CEO Sundar Pichai told us AI Overviews have resulted in an \u201cincrease in Search usage.\u201d Pichai said the same thing during Alphabet\u2019s Q1 2024 earnings call.<\/p>\n<p>But if that\u2019s the case \u2013\u00a0doesn\u2019t that mean AI Overviews, or the artist formerly known as Search Generative Experience (SGE), isn\u2019t solving a problem it was supposedly invented to fix? <\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1038259\/SEL_Post-text --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1693000027709-0\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"post-break\"><\/div>\n<p>Namely, giving users the answer or information they want, faster?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, in the same week that OpenAI basically created Samantha, the AI virtual assistant from the movie \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Her_(film)\">Her<\/a>,\u201d Google\u2019s tagline became \u201cLet Google do the Googling for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, if Google is now doing the Googling for you, Search volume will likely go up when Google can\u2019t find what Google is Googling for on Google! <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-no-blue-links\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_blue_links\"><\/span>No blue links<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Google\u2019s Search in the Gemini era video was telling. <\/p>\n<p>Watch this:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"rll-youtube-player\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s4InWsd-J6g\" data-id=\"s4InWsd-J6g\" data-query=\"feature=oembed\" data-alt=\"Search in the Gemini era | Google I\/O 2024\"><\/div>\n<p><noscript><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Search in the Gemini era | Google I\/O 2024\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s4InWsd-J6g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>What did you notice was missing?<\/p>\n<p>The subheading already gave it away, but there are no blue links in sight.<\/p>\n<p>Former Google CEO said Google is not about blue links. Clearly, he wasn\u2019t wrong.<\/p>\n<p>In Google\u2019s Gemini era, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arently, links will now live in a <em>Web<\/em> filter.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re lucky, <em>Web<\/em> will be the fourth option you can choose (after <em>All<\/em>, <em>Images<\/em>, <em>Video<\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a><\/em>) \u2013 or you may have to hunt for the <em>Web<\/em> filter under the <em>More<\/em> options.<\/p>\n<p>We knew this was coming. For two decades, Google has talked about Search being like the computer from \u201cStar Trek\u201d:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhen search grows up, it will look like Star Trek: you talk into the air (\u201cComputer! What\u2019s the situation down on the planet?\u201d) and the computer processes your question, figures out its context, figures out what response you\u2019re looking for, searches a giant database in who-knows-how-many languages, translates\/analyses\/summarises all the results, and presents them back to you in a pleasant voice. I think this <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> is about, oh, 300 years off.\u201d <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That quote, from former Google Chief Technology Officer Craig Silverstein, is from 2003. <\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t take 300 years. It took just 20.<\/p>\n<p>The future is here. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-search-was-already-fragmenting\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Search_was_already_fragmenting\"><\/span>Search was already fragmenting<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We don\u2019t know exact data on overall Google Search usage in 2024 and how it compares to previous years. Google doesn\u2019t reveal that.<\/p>\n<p>But reporting an increase in Search usage is like reporting on Domain Authority. It\u2019s a meaningless vanity metric. <\/p>\n<p>Google claims user satisfaction has also gone up during the same time. But I can\u2019t remember an extended period of sustained negativity around the quality of Google\u2019s Search results as I\u2019ve seen over the past two years \u2013 both inside and outside of the search marketing industry.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s own data has shown that younger Internet users going to TikTok and Instagram instead of Google. While Google is a monopoly <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> search engine, people are searching on other platforms \u2013 Amazon, TikTok, YouTube, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>, Reddit and more.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, we\u2019ve been hearing rumors about ChatGPT search \u2013\u00a0and I fully expect OpenAI to launch a search product in the near future.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dig deeper. Google Just Made Some Big Search AI Changes<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20240515-google-s-ai-search-revamp-puts-publishers-in-a-quandary\">Google\u2019s AI search revamp puts publishers in a quandary<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/the-media-leader.com\/google-searchs-ai-overview-a-threat-to-journalism-warns-nma-chief\/\">Google Search\u2019s AI Overview a threat to journalism, warns NMA chief<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This quote from Owen Meredith, CEO of the News Media Association, is a variation on one that we\u2019ve heard in recent months from content creators who have recently been frustrated by Google algorithm updates:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cGoogle\u2019s\u00a0stated mission\u00a0is to \u2018organise the world\u2019s information and make it universally accessible\u2019 by sending visitors to websites. Introducing [generative AI] into search and AI Overviews that directly synthesise and present information to the user risks discouraging users from clicking through to the original links, in turn threatening the business model of those who invest in journalism and quality information.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Relying entirely or mostly on one platform like Google to send you traffic via clicks on links isn\u2019t a business model. It\u2019s gambling. Because anytime Google changes something, you risk losing everything.<\/p>\n<p>Ten blue links were a transitory way to provide answers. Now we have AI Overviews.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tying-a-bow-on-it\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tying_a_bow_on_it\"><\/span>Tying a bow on it<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So we don\u2019t know for a fact that people are searching less on Google. We just know it\u2019s true. <\/p>\n<p>People are unhappy with Search.
