“#Biden walks back national mask mandate over \u2018constitutional issue\u2019<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden walked back his own call for a national mask mandate, saying he wouldn\u2019t issue any binding orders because he believes it would be unconstitutional.<\/p>\n

The former vice president was questioned by AZFamily\u2019s \u201cPolitics Unplugged\u201d Sunday about his repeated pledges to use the powers of the presidency to force Americans to wear masks when he got candid about the efficacy of a mandate.<\/p>\n

Asked to respond to the governors who had app<\/a>reciated President Trump\u2019s more targeted coronavirus approach, which gave more authority to the states, Biden said, \u201cWell, I hope you could trust the governors.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut here\u2019s the deal, the federal government \u2014 there\u2019s a constitutional issue whether federal government could issue such a mandate. I don\u2019t think constitutionally they could, so I wouldn\u2019t issue a mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Given the legal challenges, Biden said he would \u201cplead with\u201d people to wear a mask, adding, \u201cI\u2019d set an example.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden then noted that case rates were dropping in places where local authorities had implemented mask orders.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about making sure the public is safe and secure, and that is a local decision but there should be national standards laid out as to how it should be gone about. You can\u2019t mandate that,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

Biden called for an immedia<\/a>te, three-month-long nationwide mask mandate in mid-August, arguing at time that the move would save about 40,000 lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope we learned a lesson. Hope the president has learned the lesson. But again, this is not about Democrat, Republican or independent. This is about saving Americans\u2019 lives,\u201d the 2020 Democrat said at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo let\u2019s just institute a mass mandate nationwide starting immediately. And we will save \u2014 the estimates are that we will save 40,000 lives in the next three months once that is done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to calling for the mandate, Biden said that he would use his federal powers to force mask wearing if elected in November.<\/p>\n

Speaking to CBS Pittsburgh affiliate KDKA in June, the former veep said he would sign an executive order requiring Americans to wear face coverings.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe one thing we do know, these masks make a gigantic difference. I would insist that everybody in public be wearing that mask. [For] anyone to reopen, it would have to make sure that they walked into a business that had masks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Asked if he would use his federal powers to require Americans to don masks, he replied, \u201cYes, I would from an executive standpoint, yes I would.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris said late last month that a nationwide mask requirement would be one of the administration\u2019s first orders of business if successful in ousting President Trump.<\/p>\n

In that same NBC \u201cToday Show\u201d interview, however, Sen. Harris (D-Calif.) said \u201cIt\u2019s a standard. I mean, nobody\u2019s going to be punished,\u201d when she was asked how the order would be enforced.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody likes to wear a mask, this is a universal feeling, right? So, that\u2019s not the point,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe point is this is what we as responsible people who love our neighbor, we have to just do that right now. God willing, it won\u2019t be forever.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
