But he has no stats to share at this moment to prove that.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"bialty-container\">\nIn the latest case of tell and don\u2019t show, Google\u2019s VP\/GM of Advertising (Ads on Search\/Google Properties) Shashi Thakur was interviewed by Marketing Brew about whether users will click on links in AI Overviews. His response:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWe are seeing that h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But when asked whether he would share any stat or research to back that claim up, he responded:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cNo stats to share at this moment.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> Google is facing heavy criticism about the quality of Search results and from brands and content creators who are afraid they will get less organic search traffic. Meanwhile, Google is so carefully wordsmithing its answers in a PR-friendly way \u2013 to focus on how much users \u201clove AI answers\u201d \u2013 that it feels forced, inauthentic or even fake. <\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1038259\/SEL_Post-text --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1693000027709-0\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"post-break\"><\/div>\n<p>But this manufactured enthusiasm is wearing thin. Where\u2019s the proof? Why won\u2019t Google share any actual data? <\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Diversity of clicks and higher clicks\u2019. <\/strong>Thakur was asked about publishers\u2019 concerns that their websites will get fewer clicks in Google Search results, which would also impact Google\u2019s ad business. Thakur, like Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, used a lot of words to say pretty much nothing: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWe provide links within the AI answer. The AI answer is not just a blob of text. There is text, and there are links embedded within that ad.\u2026The diversity of publishers that users are clicking into is higher with the presence of links inside the AI answer.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhen you put those two together, there is still a healthy amount of user interest, not just in consuming the AI answer or the AI Overview, as an end-all, but to click to understand more. These two things that I\u2019ve said\u2014the increase in diversity of clicks and higher clicks for links embedded inside the AI answers\u2026Those tell you that users are actually showing an interest to dig deeper and click into publishers.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This non-answer is all over the place. He was asked about display ads on publisher sites, but brought it back to AI Overviews, which are not display ads. <\/p>\n<p>Also, publishers don\u2019t care about diversity of clicks. They want traffic \u2013 and most want to monetize that traffic. Greater visibility is what leads to greater amounts of traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Microsoft Bing\u2019s Fabrice Canel has said we should expect less click volume, but more \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/kalicube.com\/learning-spaces\/faq\/seo-glossary\/how-does-generative-ai-in-search-work\/\">qualified clicks<\/a>\u201d from AI search.\u00a0Shouldn\u2019t we expect the same from Google? After all, Google\u2019s AI answers are supposed to reduce the amount of time and searches needed to accomplish tasks. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Commercial clicks. <\/strong>Thakur also wasn\u2019t asked about clicks in AI search for commercial queries, but talked about it anyway. Twice:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cUsers love AI answers. They come back for more\u2026When ads come along and complement the answers with commercial actions, we see users engaging with those ads.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIn commercial queries, things that deserve a commercial action, there\u2019s always a need to click through to somebody\u2014whether it\u2019s an insurer, or a merchant, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> site. There\u2019s always a need to click through to complete your action.
