The EU has sealed the deal on its AI Act. Meanwhile, in Seoul, South Korea, 16 world-leading companies have signed the \u201cFrontier AI Safety Commitments,\u201d and a group of countries have promised to work together on mitigating risks associated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To say that the past year was the one when the world woke up to AI would be an understatement. The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 catapulted a previously behind-the-scenes technology into conversations around the dinner table and parliamentary halls alike.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And all of a sudden, an apocalyptic future ruled by machines went from sci-fi concept to a potential real-world scenario. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least if one is to believe the many researchers, interest groups, and even the CEOs of AI companies who have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed doomsday petitions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to slow down development of the technology until sufficient safeguards can be implemented.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not that such concerns seem to have done much to reduce the speed with which tech companies have been inciting each other to roll out new AI products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mitigating_AI_risk_of_varying_nature\"><\/span>Mitigating AI risk of varying nature<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond extinction by algorithm, there are also more im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te threats from the proliferation of AI, such as bias, surveillance, and mass distribution of misinformation. The European signatories are Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, UK, Turkey, and the Netherlands, as well as the EU as a unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This agreement follows the \u201cFrontier AI Safety Commitments,\u201d to which 16 of the world\u2019s most influential AI companies and organisations acceded on Tuesday. The signatories, which include French startup phenomenon Mistral AI, commit to voluntarily (meaning there is no enforcement) identify, assess, and manage risks throughout the AI lifecycle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes setting thresholds for intolerable risks, implementing risk mitigations, and establishing processes for handling situations where risks exceed the defined thresholds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Could_AI_regulation_cycles_speed_up\"><\/span>Could AI regulation cycles speed up?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AI Seoul Summit comes over six months after the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park in the UK. Paris will host the next gathering \u2014 the AI Action Summit \u2014 in February 2025. Dropping the \u201csafety\u201d in favour of \u201caction\u201d may have something to do with President Macron\u2019s desire to make Paris \u201c<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2024\/05\/22\/macron-announces-new-investments-in-tech-says-paris-will-be-city-of-ai\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the city of artificial intelligence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the current geopolitical moment, the complexities of AI can\u2019t be separated from the regulatory discussion \u2014 they must be addressed. Global collaboration is crucial to ensure AI is rolled out safely and responsibly,\u201d said Mark Rodseth, VP of Technology, EMEA at CI&amp;T.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGiven the rapid advancement of AI, we need much shorter cycles of regulation. This will be challenging, as governments and regulatory authorities will need to accelerate their pace,\u201d he adds.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is something that may prove tricky for the EU in particular, given the bloc\u2019s consensus-driven regulatory cycles. Nonetheless, EU ministers this week <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed the landmark AI Act<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will enter into force next month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA large distinction between the EU AI Act and the Frontier AI Safety Commitments is that the latter enable organisations to determine their own thresholds for risk,\u201d Maria Koskinen, AI Policy Manager at Finnish AI governance startup Saidot, tells TNW.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, given that companies are asked to share how they\u2019re categorising risks that would be \u201cdeemed intolerable\u201d into thresholds and how they plan to mitigate these risks, this seems to signify that companies and governments across the globe are taking lessons from the EU AI Act\u2019s risk-based approach, Koskinen added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether they are successful in their quest, only time will tell.<\/span>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
