The film, about a damaged loner returning to his desert hometown after a spell in prison and kinding a kindred spirit in an equally world-weary greyhound, beat 17 other titles to take the top prize in the festival\u2019s second-most prestigious competitive section. (The festival\u2019s Official Competition awards will be handed out tomorrow night.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Jury president Xavier Dolan, the actor-auteur behind such films as \u201cMommy\u201d and \u201cLaurence Anyways,\u201d commended Guan\u2019s film for \u201cits breathtaking poetry, its imagination, its precision [and] its masterful direction.\u201d He echoed the enthusiasm of <em>Variety <\/em>critic Jessica Kiang, whose rave review of \u201cBlack Dog\u201d noted that it\u2019s a far smaller production than the director\u2019s recent blockbusters \u201cThe Eight Hundred\u201d and \u201cThe Sacrifice,\u201d but that it \u201cnonetheless has the grandly cinematic vision to lend an intimate tale a gloriously epic, allegorical edge.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    It wasn\u2019t a surprising choice, given that Guan\u2019s film received some of the best notices of any film in the strand, though the film\u2019s team ascended the stage \u2014 without Guan, but with Xin, their wiry canine star, in tow \u2014 looking flabbergasted. \u201cHow much time do we have?\u201d said breathless leading man Eddie Peng, kicking off the speeches, honoring his director before handing over to the producers, one of whom accepted with a modified quote from the film itself: \u201cWe stand up, we walk towards the future, and I hope that Chinese cinema can get better and better.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    The win was something of a vindication, too, for Xin, who earlier in the day had to settle for second prize at the rather more informally juried Palm Dog awards, recognizing the best canine performances across all sections of the Cannes lineup. She lost out to Kodi, the equally impressive mongrel at the heart of another Un Certain Regard title, Laetitia Dosch\u2019s zany courtroom comedy \u201cDog on Trial.\u201d (Dosch\u2019s film went unrewarded by Dolan\u2019s jury, which only recognizes human thesping.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    The jury \u2014 also made up of actor Vicky Krieps, filmmakers Ma\u00efmouna Doucour\u00e9 and Asmae El Moudir, and veteran film writer (former <em>Variety <\/em>chief critic) Todd McCarthy \u2014 presented the runner-up award, the Jury Prize, to French director Boris Lojkine\u2019s \u201cThe Story of Souleymane.\u201d The film, a moving <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> drama chronicling the struggle of an immigrant Guinean delivery cyclist in Paris as he prepares for an asylum <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lication interview, is carried by first-time actor Abou Sangare, who won one of the jury\u2019s two non-gendered performance awards \u2014 thus making Lojkine\u2019s film the night\u2019s only multiple prizewinner. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Presenting Sangare\u2019s award, Krieps commended the actor\u2019s commitment: \u201cYou woke up every morning at 5 a.m. and probably wondered, \u2018What the fuck am I doing?\u2019 And it was fucking brilliant, what you were doing.\u201d The second performance prize went to Indian actor Anasuya Sengupta for her performance as a queer Delhi sex worker on the run after killing a police officer in director Konstantin Bojanov\u2019s \u201cThe Shameless.\u201d She gave the night\u2019s most rousing speech, dedicating her award \u201cto the queer community and other marginalized communities all around the world for so bravely fighting a fight they really shouldn\u2019t have to fight.\u201d She continued, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be queer to fight for equality, you don\u2019t have be colonized to know that colonizing is pathetic \u2014 we just need to be very, very decent human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    The jury\u2019s Best Director prize was shared by Zambian-British helmer Rungano Nyoni, for her haunting sophomore feature \u201cOn Becoming a Guinea Fowl,\u201d and Roberto Minervini, a celebrated Italian docmaker who shifted fully to narrative filmmaking for his American Civil War drama \u201cThe Damned.\u201d Nyoni\u2019s A24-backed film, about the emergence of sexual abuse trauma during family preparations for a traditional Zambian funeral, was praised by <em>Variety<\/em>\u2018s critic as \u201cpalpably new, future-minded filmmaking, at once intrepidly daring and rigorously poised.\u201d \u201cThe Damned,\u201d meanwhile, was described by chief critic Peter Debruge as \u201ca quiet, occasionally poetic film [that] feels like a natural extension of the themes and approach of Minervini\u2019s earlier work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Unlike in the Official Competition, Un Certain Regard juries are given leeway to present special prizes of their own description, so a one-off Youth Prize was devised for French freshman director Louise Courvoisier\u2019s \u201cHoly Cow!\u201d (or \u201cVingt Dieux\u201d), which assembled a lively ensemble of first-time actors for its tale of a scrappy rural teen entering a regional cheese-making competition.
