Last weekend at 24-HOUR DRONE, I watched her perform a powerful set over a minimal backing track: Alone on stage, the Egyptian vocalist and composer-producer seemed overcome with emotion, pounding her chest and falling to the ground as she sang heart-wrenching laments in Arabic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            On <i>Pollution Opera<\/i>, the self-titled debut album from her duo with fellow singer-sound artist <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/elvinbrandhi\/?hl=en\">Elvin Brandhi<\/a>, shows a different, though not entirely unrelated, side of her skill set. The new album, released in April on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dansenoire.com\/\">Danse Noire<\/a>, is a haunted journey through menacing drones, jarring percussion, and jumpscare samples. But even amid all this noise, there\u2019s a constant sense of forward motion, evoking a slow but unhalting <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> down the River Styx into the depths of Tartarus.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261885\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pollution Opera - Cairo ???\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/n1F8EumEEig?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('261885');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261886\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            The interplay between El-Shazly\u2019s and Brandhi\u2019s vocal lines is <i>Pollution Opera<\/i>\u2019s central feature. Stationed at nearly opposite poles of what the album\u2019s bio calls the \u201cfeminine vocal spectrum,\u201d their attraction is magnetic, and the ensuing fusion is nuclear.<\/p>\n<p>            Take \u201cCairo ???,\u201d the sinister cut that sits dead center on <i>Pollution Opera<\/i>\u2019s tracklist: Jagged bursts of drum-like feedback disruptively punctuate the orbit of Brandhi\u2019s Auto-Tuned glossolalia around El Shazly\u2019s moans, which sit most comfortably in the alto range but are prone to breathtakingly fast flights octaves above it. But these stabs of static fail to puncture the song\u2019s gravitational center \u2014 an insistent synth that\u2019s essentially the main piano <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a> from <i>Phantom of the Opera<\/i>, slowed to a 10th of its original speed and threaded through a foghorn filter \u2014 as it oozes methodically toward its destination. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The song\u2019s visuals are appropriately dystopian. Set in a quaint dining room where Brandhi and El Shazly sit and wander aimlessly while an older gentleman drinks from a mug, reads, and eventually leaves, it\u2019s quotidian on paper. Riding through El Shazly\u2019s native Cairo, she and her Welsh counterpart welcomed the city\u2019s noise pollution, a volley of figurative arrows splitting the literal surrounding smog. <\/p>\n<p>            The record germinated in Kampala, Uganda \u2014 another motorcycle-saturated city, as luck would have it \u2014 where the two artists served out separate but simultaneous residencies with the meteoric <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nyegenyegetapes.bandcamp.com\/\">Nyege Nyege<\/a> collective. Field recordings from both cities (engines revving, dogs barking, children shouting) sit alongside their vocal latticework on the finished product, encircling their sturdy synth foundations like swarming wasps and colliding to create what the duo describe as \u201can uncompromising world-spew, a shameless alloy of love and hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cOur futurist mythology unfolds between death and rebirth, a timeless vacuum of hope and dread,\u201d they write, describing what sounds like an intense creative process. \u201cThe repetition of musical steps, in contrast to the totally improvised vocal outpour, allows us to forget our mind and speak from a nameless gut. More importantly, it gives us a glimpse of the black hole that awaits at the album\u2019s opposite end, dragging us toward our doom.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cAttention\u201d is the closest the album gets to B-movie camp: Introduced by an evil laugh, an air raid siren to the tune of the violins from <i>Psycho<\/i>, and an infant wailing in stereo, the track centers uncharacteristic horrorcore bars from ascendant Egyptian rapper <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lilbaba_\/?hl=en\">Lil Baba<\/a>, gushing through a whirlwind of growls, screams, and trap drums with artillery kicks and shattered-glass snares. It\u2019s followed by \u201cTusker Light,\u201d a relatively subdued, El Shazly-forward cut that nevertheless allows the record\u2019s trademark terrors to bleed in from the edges.<\/p>\n<p>            From the symphonic swells of \u201cBite\u201d to the slow-rotting \u201cCairo ???\u201d through the creeping six-minute saga \u201cCR\u00ce Me a River,\u201d where sharp barks disrupt whispered secrets and galloping drums threaten to overtake El Shazly\u2019s transcendent singing, the album\u2019s central trilogy is its strongest section. Each of the record\u2019s final three tracks is powerful in its own right, but they don\u2019t adhere to one another the same way the first six songs do. For the first time, Charon\u2019s skiff shows signs of hesitation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Maybe that\u2019s the point, though: The job of <i>Pollution Opera<\/i> is not to heal the wounds of the world with the sense of an ending.
