\n When the Emmy nominations are announced July\u202f17, something will happ<\/a>en that hasn\u2019t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series<\/a> will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix\u2019s The Crown<\/em>. I would love to be able to say that\u2019s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.<\/p>\n

\n Such perennial nominees as HBO\u2019s Succession<\/em> and Westworld<\/em> and AMC\u2019s Better Call Saul<\/em> have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+\u2019s The Good Fight<\/em> and Star Trek: Picard<\/em>. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix\u2019s Stranger Things<\/em>, Squid Game<\/a><\/em> and Bodyguard<\/em>; HBO\/Max\u2019s Euphoria<\/em>, House of the Dragon<\/em>, The Last of Us<\/em> and The White Lotus<\/em>; Disney+\u2019s Andor <\/em>and The Mandalorian<\/em>; Hulu\u2019s The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em>; Apple TV+\u2019s Severance<\/em>; Amazon\u2019s The Boys;<\/em> and Showtime\u2019s Yellowjackets<\/em>. And the show that arguably is TV\u2019s best drama series is \u2014 like the now-concluded HBO\u2019s Barry<\/em> in recent years \u2014 competing as a comedy series: Hulu\u2019s The Bear<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n Frankly, the only reason The\u202fCrown <\/em>appears assured of another nom \u2014 for what proved to be its mediocre sixth and final season \u2014 is because the field is so thin. (Netflix seems to get this: Its campaign this season is urging Academy members to recognize the series as a whole.)<\/p>\n

\n The rest of the eight-slot category will be filled out by three kinds of shows. One type will be middling series from high-profile platforms, such as season three of Apple TV+\u2019s The Morning Show<\/em>, which has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of just 11 percent. Another type will be a high-quality show whose previous seasons were boxed out by heavier competition; Apple TV+\u2019s Slow Horses<\/em>, now up for its third season; HBO\/Max\u2019s second seasons of The Gilded Age<\/em>, Tokyo Vice<\/em> and Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty<\/em>; and Disney+\u2019s Loki<\/em> fall into this group. (Even Showtime\u2019s Billions<\/em> could be up for consideration for its seventh and final season.) And then there are rookies that would have been longer shots in a normal year: Showtime\u2019s The Curse<\/em>; Amazon\u2019s Fallout<\/em> and Mr. and Mrs. Smith<\/em>; Netflix\u2019s 3\u202fBody Problem<\/em>; Apple TV+\u2019s Hijack<\/em> and Sugar<\/em>; Disney+\u2019s Ahsoka<\/em>; and CBS\u2019 Elsbeth<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n But the reality is that none of these shows had a strong enough season to merit them a place alongside past drama series winners, among them NBC\u2019s The West Wing<\/em>, HBO\u2019s The Sopranos<\/em>, ABC\u2019s Lost<\/em>, Fox\u2019s 24<\/em>, AMC\u2019s Breaking Bad<\/em> and Showtime\u2019s Homeland<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n That\u2019s why FX announced May\u202f16 that it is expanding one of the year\u2019s most outstanding shows, Sh\u014dgun<\/em>, from a limited series to a drama series, with at least two more seasons in the works, and Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Lord Toranaga, confirmed\u00a0to return.<\/p>\n

\n Given the competition, or lack thereof, and the popularity of Sh\u014dgun<\/em> as FX\u2019s most watched show ever (based on global hours streamed), it\u2019s hard to imagine it won\u2019t cruise to a win, bringing the network its first prize in a category in which it previously landed nominations for Damages<\/em>, The Americans<\/em> and Pose<\/em>. And you can be sure that backers of every remaining limited series \u2014 among them Netflix\u2019s Ripley<\/em> and Baby Reindeer<\/em>; FX\u2019s Fargo<\/em> and Feud: Capote vs. the Swans<\/em>; HBO\/Max\u2019s True Detective: Night Country<\/em> and The Sympathizer<\/em>; Apple TV+\u2019s Lessons in Chemistry<\/em> and Masters of the Air<\/em>; and Paramount+\u2019s Lawmen: Bass Reeves<\/em> \u2014 are breathing a sigh of\u00a0relief that it\u2019s gone.\u00a0<\/p>\n
