\n For Netflix\u2019s Life on Our Planet<\/em>, cinematographer Jamie McPherson had to capture action that simply wasn\u2019t there. <\/p>\n

\n In the pilot episode, \u201cThe Rules of Life,\u201d McPherson framed this shot of cave lions facing off against woolly mammoths \u2014 two species that went extinct millions of years ago. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThey\u2019re essentially elephants and lions, so we have a sense of how they move,\u201d explains the DP, who notes that VFX supervisor Jonathan Privett of Industrial Light & Magic supplied him with early mockups of how these long-gone creatures would interact. \u201cWe do walk and run cycles, so you can get a feel for how fast a mammoth walks,\u201d notes Privett, who used studies of the animals\u2019 modern evolutionary descendants to understand these ancient beasts. <\/p>\n

\n Since all that remains are their bones, Privett\u2019s team reconstructed the skeletal forms digitally before adding textured fur and facial expressions. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere\u2019s actually a skeleton in there,\u201d he says, which is the first step in crafting realistic portrayals of the lions and mammoths. While nature docs usually capture wildlife in their native habitat, Life on Our Planet<\/em> had to reimagine \u2014 and stage \u2014 the action. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe basis is an amazing interaction we would hope to film in the wild with real creatures,\u201d says McPherson. \u201cSomething absolutely fantastical happ<\/a>ens, but we hope it\u2019s still engaging, exciting and emotional for the\u00a0audience.\u201d<\/p>\n
