In 2023, we got an unprecedented look at Yandex Search ranking factors via a leak, which was one of the biggest stories of that year. This Google document leak? It will likely be one of the biggest stories in the history of SEO and Google Search.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/1038259\/SEL_Post-text --><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1693000027709-0\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"post-break\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s inside. <\/strong>Here\u2019s what we know about the leaked documents from Fishkin and King:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Current: <\/strong>The documentation indicates this information is accurate as of March.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranking features:<\/strong> 2,596 modules are represented in the API documentation with 14,014 attributes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weighting:<\/strong> The documents did not specify how any of the ranking features are weighted \u2013\u00a0just that they exist. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Twiddlers:<\/strong> These are re-ranking functions that \u201ccan adjust the information retrieval score of a document or change the ranking of a document,\u201d according to King.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Demotions:<\/strong> Content can be demoted for a variety of reasons:\n<ul>\n<li>If a link doesn\u2019t match the target site.<\/li>\n<li>If SERP signals indicate user dissatisfaction.<\/li>\n<li>Product reviews.<\/li>\n<li>Location.<\/li>\n<li>Exact match domains.<\/li>\n<li>Porn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Change history:<\/strong> Google apparently keeps a copy of every version fo every page of it has ever indexed. This means Google can \u201cremember\u201d every change ever made to a page, but it only sees to use the last 20 changes of a URL when analyzing links. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Links matter.<\/strong> Shocking, I know. This leak confirms that link diversity and relevance remain key. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This doesn\u2019t prove Google spokespeople have lied about links not being a \u201ctop 3 ranking factor\u201d or links mattering less for ranking. Two things can be true at once. Again, we don\u2019t know how any of these features are weighted. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Successful clicks matter.<\/strong> This should not be a shocker, but if you want to rank well, you need to keep creating great content and provide a good user experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brand matters.<\/strong> Fishkin\u2019s big takeaway from the leak is that brand matters more than anything else:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIf there was one universal piece of advice I had for marketers seeking to broadly improve their organic search rankings and traffic, it would be: \u2018Build a notable, popular, well-recognized brand in your space, outside of Google search.&#8217;\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Entities matter.<\/strong> Google stores author information associated with content. <\/p>\n<p><em>Story developing.
