Over the course of our 45-minute interview, he\u2019s friendly, enthusiastic, and endearingly well mannered; relating that he listened to a \u201cshit ton of electronic music\u201d as a teen, he catches himself and asks if he\u2019s allowed to swear. When it comes to the details of his personal life, the meaning of his lyrics, and his future moves, however, he\u2019s tight lipped. His first name is Reggie, but his last name remains under wraps.<\/p>\n<p>            The 20-year-old <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/blackfondu\">abstract grime<\/a> artist, based in the South East London district of Peckham, has only released one song, and it isn\u2019t on digital streaming platforms. To listen to \u201cSB 1 3,\u201d the hard-hitting track he shared in late April, one must also watch its music video (directed by Reggie himself), which is only available on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>. But there\u2019s more music in the vault, as evidenced by several videoed performances at the Windmill Brixton and The George Tavern \u2014 where he played his first-ever show early last year \u2014 as well as a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/m001yzgc\">four-song, 14-minute live set on BBC\u2019s Radio 6 Music<\/a>. (You can also hear his bars on a short track titled \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3tasgyL6jK4&amp;ab_channel=JamiePenn\">INTERLUDE<\/a>,\u201d from London producer Shoplifting\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/jamie_penn\/sets\/shoplifting-mixtape\">latest mixtape<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>            Still, Reggie claims, all this unreleased material is subject to change. \u201cIt was only recently that I started thinking of everything as a demo until it\u2019s out,\u201d he tells me. \u201cI\u2019m getting better every day at mixing and mastering because I want to learn as much as possible, acquire as much experience as I can, before I decide to properly have something finished.\u201d If there\u2019s a plan beyond that, he\u2019s not sharing it.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261906\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SB 1 3 (Official Video)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LedPl8USFWo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('261906');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261928\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261907\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Family is a recurring <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a> in Black Fondu\u2019s released and unreleased work. Many of the lyrics on \u201cSB 1 3\u201d are nearly inaudible, consumed by the song\u2019s unruly, glitched-up beat. But the final line of its hook, \u201cScreaming every day \u2019cos they murdered his kid,\u201d cuts through the noise every time he says it. (The song delves into even darker territory elsewhere, reaching its nadir with a disturbing suicide fantasy.)<\/p>\n<p>            Near the end of \u201cAnother Domestic,\u201d the second song from his BBC set, the instrumental fades briefly for emphasis as Reggie raps, \u201cFamily ain\u2019t shit if you ain\u2019t on the map,\u201d shortly before his sister enters to sing the track\u2019s outro. And in the final passage of \u201cBikes of spade,\u201d his closer from the same set, he slows things down, singing mournfully about a painful parting \u2014 \u201cI\u2019ll try hard not to cry when you leave me\u201d \u2014 and rapping directly to his mother: \u201cMum, I\u2019m sorry that you worry \/ But it\u2019s this darkness that\u2019s inside me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            When I ask him about the fraught role of family in his music, though, he\u2019s intentionally vague. \u201cI\u2019ll just say a lot went down in my childhood, and that\u2019s had a great effect on my work,\u201d he says, \u201cso family is very important to me.\u201d And when I press him on specific lyrics, he\u2019s playfully noncommittal: \u201cI could tell you what I think it\u2019s about,\u201d he says, referring specifically to his \u201cthey murdered his kid\u201d bar. \u201cBut I think it\u2019ll be better if you come up with your own ideas. It\u2019s more fun.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261908\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cIt\u2019s so difficult \u2014 for me, even \u2014 to understand why I make the sounds I make.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261909\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Musicality runs through Reggie\u2019s family. Born in Ghana\u2019s capital city, Reggie heard stories of his maternal grandfather, chief of the village where his mother was raised, waking the town\u2019s denizens every morning to the sound of his six-drum setup. Reggie and his parents moved to London before grade school. Some of his earliest musical memories are of his father, a musician in his own right, playing Bach, who remains one of Reggie\u2019s favorite composers. He learned the piano as a pre-teen, favoring the melodies of Rachmaninoff and Chopin; at age 11, his older brother blew his mind with the Beatles. <\/p>\n<p>            Rap and electronic music were later arrivals, but Reggie devoured them when they came. Pulling up a 24-hour-plus playlist from his teenage years, he cites Nas, Tupac, MF DOOM, The Pharcyde, Snoop Dogg, Kanye West, and Mac Miller as early favorites, but he later moved on to freakier pastures.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cMy idea of music gradually\u2026\u201d He trails off and starts again: \u201cNot deteriorated, but I unlearned what I thought it was meant to be. It\u2019s only been recently that I\u2019ve been discovering artists who are akin to what I do, who I listen to, like, \u2018Damn, they they get it.\u2019\u201d This motley group includes Xiu Xiu, esperanza spalding, Nick Drake, King Krule, and James Blake, none of whom sound much like Black Fondu.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261910\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Black Fondu - Live at the Windmill, London, 17\/07\/2023\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6FNTxEkifZQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('261910');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261913\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            In fact, analogs for Reggie\u2019s music are few and far between, although I hear bits of Sweden\u2019s Varg2TM in his harsh yet flighty production style, and some Dean Blunt (specifically as Babyfather) in his ability to channel his lyrics into a smooth flow over this uneven terrain. \u201cIt\u2019s so difficult \u2014 for me, even \u2014 to understand why I make the sounds I make,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd it changes often. I\u2019ll make a song where suddenly it\u2019s just me and a guitar, even singing. I think it\u2019s hard to pinpoint what sound [I\u2019m going for]. I just want it to be raw and emotional and visceral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Reggie started making beats in secondary school, playing them for his friends in the music room during lunch period. During early COVID lockdown, his interest in recording music became an obsession. Over the next two years, as he skated through sixth form, he claims he made 10 to 20 beats a day, uploading the best of them to Soundcloud under his given name. Production quickly outranked studying on his list of priorities, to the point where he began working on his tracks during Zoom class. \u201cMy friends would see me headbopping, and they\u2019d be like, \u2018Is this guy listening to music right now?\u2019\u201d he remembers. \u201cBut I was making beats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            This prolific period was interrupted only once. \u201cThere came a point when something happened in my life that stopped me,\u201d he says, eliding salacious details once again. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to do music anymore, so when I turned 18, I stopped for quite some time.\u201d He pauses, catching himself again before continuing: \u201cWell, to me it felt like forever, but it was only two months.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261914\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cSimplicity is the way.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-261915\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Rapping and singing came later, and more organically: \u201cI knew I didn\u2019t need to do too much apart from saying exactly what came to me,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m a strong believer in the subconscious at work. Most of my songs are freestyled on voice memos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            The visceral nature of Black Fondu\u2019s music is emphasized in his live performances, which have created a buzz in the same Windmill-centered scene that gave us Squid, black midi, and Black Country, New Road. As with those bands, Windmill booker Tim Perry\u2019s willingness to take a chance on him when he was totally untested gave him the foothold he needed to garner some regional clout. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cReggie was a familiar face at many shows, so it was only fair we gave him a chance, and his first set here went very well,\u201d Perry remembers. \u201cHe was up for doing short-notice shows, so he gradually picked up fans, and then word spread and bands started asking for him.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            These groups included fellow South East Londoners Fatdog and Shame, and the ascendant Detroit ghettotech trio HiTech. Just this week, he supported New Orleans synth punks Special Interest in Brighton and Manchester. He used to send his beats to friends and family, but he soon realized that his own taste was his best compass. As he\u2019s grown more confident in his instincts, he\u2019s become more comfortable killing his darlings in service of the greater good. \u201cI started to understand that detail is so important, stuff that you kind of hear but mostly feel,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd to feel that, you have to get rid of the shit so you only have what\u2019s needed, what brings the feel and strengthens the song.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            This paring down is part of Reggie\u2019s new outlook on life. \u201cI think simplicity is what I\u2019m trying to find now,\u201d he tells me. \u201cSimplicity is the way.
