\n Joel Kim Booster is sharing why his focus is not on becoming a trailblazer. <\/p>\n

\n The comedia<\/a>n-actor has established his name in the entertainment industry in recent years, notably with his 2022 Netflix stand-up special\u00a0Psychosexual<\/em>, Hulu\u2019s gay romantic comedy\u00a0Fire Island<\/em>, which he wrote and starred in, and his role in the TV series<\/a> Loot<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt\u2019s difficult because I am not somebody who went into this wanting to be an advocate or a trailblazer or anything \u2014 I just wanted to make people laugh,\u201d he recently explained to People<\/em> magazine<\/a>. \u201cAll the rest of it is a byproduct. You cannot prioritize it. You cannot be mission first, joke second and be successful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Booster said it actually makes him \u201creally uncomfortable\u201d when people call him a \u201ctrailblazer\u201d as he feels the term should be used for comedians who helped pave the way for others. And particularly those who came before him during times when the LGBTQ+ community wasn\u2019t as widely accepted. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI started doing comedy at a very convenient time for someone like me,\u201d he added. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t easy, but there weren\u2019t the same barriers to entry that I think there were, you know, a decade before I started.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n Throughout his career, Booster said the people he\u2019s looked up to are Guy Branum, who he described as \u201cthe godfather of gay guy comedians,\u201d and Margaret Cho, who he also cast in Fire Island<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cAs a queer Asian person coming up, I devoured everything Margaret Cho did,\u201d he said. \u201cShe has always been such a firebrand. She didn\u2019t wait around for someone to open the door. She knocked it down herself. That app<\/a>ealed to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
