\n A man was killed by a shark Tuesday while surfing along Australia\u2019s Gold Coast, officials said.<\/p>\n

The victim, a 46-year-old man who was not immedia<\/a>tely identified, was pulled to shore by other surfers at Greenmount Beach in Coolangatta, where he was pronounced dead with severe leg injuries, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.<\/p>\n

A witness said she saw the man and his surfboard \u201cfloating\u201d in the water when three others were trying to rescue him after the attack.<\/p>\n

The group dragged the man and his board onto the sand and awaited help from responding lifeguards.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was pretty much already gone by then,\u201d Jade Parker told the news<\/a>paper. \u201cFrom his groin to his knee was just \u2014 there was nothing there.\u201d<\/p>\n

A police helicopter was dispatched to find the shark, but no sightings were made at the beach, which has nets to deter the animals. However, officials have warned that they do not prevent them from entering waters close to shore.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike every Gold Coaster tonight, I am both shocked and saddened to learn of this terrible tragedy,\u201d Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The attack marks just the second fatality on the Gold Coast since the city\u2019s 85 beaches first installed shark nets and drum lines in 1962, the Associated Press reports.<\/p>\n

Throughout Queensland in northeast Australia, two other people have been killed by sharks this summer, including a man at Fraser Island in July, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.<\/p>\n

Beaches from the New South Wales border to Gold Coast suburb Burleigh will be closed Wednesday following the attack, Gold Coast city officials told the newspaper.<\/p>\n

Another surfer at the beach told 9 News he was filming his teenage son in the water when he heard people yelling, \u201cShark, shark, shark.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI looked around [and] thought maybe it\u2019s a dolphin,\u201d Leo Cabral told the station. \u201cI looked again at my son and with my camera, I zoomed in next to him to his left and I saw a board and the guy was laying down in the water.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cabral said he \u201ccouldn\u2019t feel\u201d his body as he then screamed for his 13-year-old son to get out of the water.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone was running around, there were kids crying on the sand,\u201d Cabral continued. \u201cA few people were standing by and we watching and couldn\u2019t believe what they were seeing. It was so sad, it was really sad.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
