As an avid swimmer and surfer I also think the ocean is simply bloody magnificent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the world\u2019s oceans face unprecedented threats from pollution, overfishing, and climate change. This is undermining the health of an ecosystem that supports all life on Earth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this era of rapid technological advancement, innovative solutions are emerging that can help reverse the damage. Scientists also use DiveRay to track the progress of restoration efforts, like coral gardening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PlanBlue recently teamed up with Dutch surveying giant Fugro to scale up its <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>. It\u2019s also working on making DiveRay compatible with underwater robots that can be programmed to scan much larger areas than human divers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_app_fighting_overfishing\"><\/span><b>The app fighting overfishing\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we still know very little about the seafloor, the sheer extent of overfishing in our oceans is well documented. Nearly 90% of the world\u2019s marine fish stocks are now fully<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/fisheries\/en\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exploited, overexploited or depleted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might think that stopping eating fish altogether is the answer, and you could be right. But the reality is that for <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sustainablefisheries-uw.org\/seafood-101\/what-does-the-world-eat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">billions of people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seafood is a crucial source of food and income.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABALOBI, based out of Cape Town, South Africa, is an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> and traceability platform that looks to kill two birds with one stone. The first allows fishers to upload details of their daily catch to an encrypted database. Only fish that are caught legally within sustainable bag limits can be uploaded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, on a marketplace app, restaurants and homeowners can purchase the fish at a fair price. This lessens pressure species like lobster or tuna whose numbers are dwindling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABALOBI\u2019s technology is now used by partner organisations in 12 other countries, including Chile, Madagascar, Croatia, and Ireland. The startup was a finalist for last year\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/earthshotprize.org\/winners-finalists\/abalobi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earthshot prize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3D-printed_reefs\"><\/span><b>3D-printed reefs<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While overfishing is having a direct impact on fish numbers, climate change is making the ocean warmer and more acidic. This is taking its toll on one of the ocean\u2019s most precious habitats: coral reefs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past thirty years,<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.nl\/dieren\/koraal?_ga=2.178472934.314518231.1717751234-964629972.1717751234#:~:text=Koraalriffen%20worden%20bedreigd,%2C%20overbevissing%2C%20sleepnetten%20en%20vervuiling.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">half<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the world\u2019s coral reefs have died and disappeared. Coastruction, a startup based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, wants to print them back to life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded by Nadia Fani, a computer scientist and entrepreneur from Italy, Coastruction has devised a way to 3D-print complex reef-like structures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coastruction uses a special 3D-printer that deposits concrete layer-by-layer to create complex geometric shapes. Credit: Coastruction<\/figcaption><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1407359 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2024\/06\/world-ocean-day-3d-printed-coral.jpg\" alt=\"world-ocean-day-3d-printed-coral\" width=\"1640\" height=\"1007\" srcset=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coastruction consults with marine scientists to determine the most fitting designs or materials for a particular underwater location. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe create artificial reefs that mimic real reefs to the greatest extent possible,\u201d Fani tells me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 3D structures are then placed underwater in coastlines around the world, like Maldives or Saudi Arabia. Over time, they become habitats for fish, new coral and algae. In sufficient numbers, they can also act as a barrier to protect coastal cities from storms and erosion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coastruction is currently looking to scale up. It\u2019s building a new printer and seeking further investment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The startup\u2019s main target market is ecotourism, especially private resorts who want to restore damaged reefs to attract more tourists. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it has also generated interest from port authorities, offshore wind farms, and governments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like all efforts to protect our seas, Coastruction\u2019s technology remains but a drop in the ocean relative to the issue at hand.
