In a city where most every building is sequentially numbered, street-facing, and explorable from one\u2019s personal device, the Brooklyn collective\/co-op where the 21-year-old experimental folk artist lives is a rare exception. After locking my bike to a signpost further down her block\u2019s steep incline, I struggle to find the address I\u2019ve been given. Finally, I walk below a mossy power line into an overgrown cove of a driveway, where I\u2019m greeted by Coope, a willowy figure in jeans and a plain white tee.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            We climb a set of stairs and walk inside through a vestibule choked by unused bikes, paint cans, and other miscellanea \u2014 she points me to a plastic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>le she\u2019s particularly fond of. We enter a spacious living room. Here, she ignites a candle and leads me down a hallway draped with dim Christmas lights. \u201cWe don\u2019t have electricity,\u201d she jokes.<\/p>\n<p>            Coope\u2019s bedroom\/studio is a large, open-plan space, its walls adorned with her abstract paintings (a recent Pratt grad, she says she\u2019s \u201con record\u201d as the school\u2019s \u201cbiggest hater of all time\u201d). Her 2021 debut EP, <i>Seemely<\/i>, and her first LP, <i>Darning Woman<\/i>, which arrived at the end of May, are not so much timeless as outside time. Their weird aura \u2014 an eerie combination of pastoral folk and medieval hymnal warped into unruly structures \u2014 would be discomfiting in any era of human history.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Take the new album\u2019s lead single, \u201cHe Is On His Way Home, We Don\u2019t Live Together\u201d: The song opens on a collective moan, with several vocal lines stacked at odd angles to create an unsettling dissonance before Coope\u2019s main melody establishes itself. The childlike, near-whispered repetition of the track\u2019s titular lyric, mirrored by a ghostly piano figure from sonic polyglot Patrick Shiroishi, continues for a full minute. In the background, more Coopes continue to creep in, again layered unevenly. <\/p>\n<p>            Finally, her voices dissolve back into inchoate moaning, followed by a brief lyric change that upholds the title\u2019s scansion (\u201cTold me off, you must realize that I am younger\u201d). This too dissipates, as does the piano line, which is replaced by an arrhythmic rattle and jarringly strummed chords from Matthew J. Rolin\u2019s electric guitar. \u201cIt\u2019s the best part of the song,\u201d Coope says of Rolin\u2019s bit, which came about through her unlikely, Instagram-initiated friendship with Shiroishi, \u201cand I didn\u2019t even do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Rolin\u2019s solo at the end of \u201cHe Is On His Way Home\u2026\u201d is his only contribution to <i>Darning Woman<\/i>, and Shiroishi returns only once more, on the record\u2019s closing track. As a kid, she spent most of her time outside, daydreaming. \u201cI really enjoyed preschool,\u201d she tells me. \u201cI don\u2019t know if I was hallucinating or what \u2014 children have very fantastical views of the world \u2014 but I\u2019m nostalgic for that. I\u2019m always trying to get toward that idealized vision of life.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Through her early teens, she drew incessantly but \u201cvisionlessly\u201d and had little interest in music. In fact, it was the musical aspect of theater that ultimately discouraged her from pursuing an acting career. And though she briefly tried the clarinet, she balked at learning to read sheet music. (To this day, she\u2019s skeptical of anyone who claims they can.) \u201cI pretended to know what I was doing, but I would just play one note,\u201d she says. \u201cI don\u2019t know what kind of true passion is born in middle school band.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262120\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cI had to look at what was around me to come up with anything, and that in turn led me to reach for further and more abstracted concepts.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262119\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Outside school, her parents took her to art events across the Hudson Valley, many of which featured music. \u201cPete Seeger was always around,\u201d she remembers. \u201cIt was a very folksy vibe. Everyone\u2019s parents recorded folk albums.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            That energy didn\u2019t bleed into the school system, though. \u201cI had phases with really random pop acts because I was always trying to find a balance,\u201d she says. \u201cThere was no exposure to the indie side of music \u2014 or if there was, I didn\u2019t see evidence of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            The turning point came during the second semester of her senior year of high school, when her parents finally relented to buying her a laptop as she prepared to leave for college. She\u2019d already started obsessing over music, spending hours on her new computer exploring the catalogs of the artists featured in Amoeba\u2019s \u201cWhat\u2019s In My Bag\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> and following daisy chains that began with the records these artists had collected in the videos and grew from there: toward \u201990s avant-pop bands like Broadcast, whose creative process she imagined as \u201csomeone building a house, but they\u2019re obsessed with every single beam being sourced from something\u201d; toward \u201950s vocal groups like the Everly Brothers, whose close harmonies unlocked the layering that\u2019s become a central feature of her work, despite her insistence that she\u2019s not a natural harmonizer; toward medieval choral music, where she found hocketing \u2014 a technique that appears most prominently on <i>Darning Woman<\/i> in \u201cSounds of a Giddy Woman,\u201d in which alternating voices create the illusion of continuity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262111\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1505952132\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=417267589\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/anastasiacoope.bandcamp.com\/album\/darning-woman\">Darning Woman by Anastasia Coope<\/a><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262118\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cI really enjoyed preschool\u2026 I\u2019m always trying to get toward that idealized vision of life.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262112\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            \u201cIt was an immediate identity shift,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI had so many [free] hours every day, so even if six of them were online classes and being on my phone, it felt natural that the thing I would do when I was like, \u2018I have to do something,\u2019 was record music.\u201d In a period of two years, she claims she made about 600 songs. <\/p>\n<p>            In those early days, she\u2019d hit record with no plan of what to sing, improvising until she landed on an idea she liked. \u201cIt was all just trying to come up with the next word,\u201d she says. \u201cThe repetition is either me getting into something or reaching for the next lyric.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            She credits her songs\u2019 nebulous themes, another consistent quality across her work, to the circumstances of their creation: \u201cI didn\u2019t have any life experiences happening. I was alone, so I wasn\u2019t having friend falling outs. I wasn\u2019t meeting people. Its main lyric \u2014 \u201cWonder how hooded boy would be understood if he woke up with no feet\u201d \u2014 sprang to mind while Coope was looking at one of her own paintings, which happened to depict a boy in a hood (a recurring image in her art), and realized his feet were mysteriously absent. But the stilted central lyrics of tracks like \u201cDarning Woman\u201d and \u201cWomen\u2019s Role in War\u201d evoke convention and antiquity.
