The Atlanta r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er has sat in a Fulton County jail since May 2022, alleged by the state of Georgia to be the ringleader of a criminal street gang (six additional felonies connected to gang, drug, and firearm violations were added in August 2022). The case has dragged on since then \u2014 jury selection alone took 10 months \u2014 ensuring that only the most loyal Thug fans would watch the internet for updates, following court reporters assigned to the case and monitoring the video livestream, broadcast from inside the court.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Then, on Monday, everything exploded. Brian Steel, Young Thug\u2019s lead attorney, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/crime\/young-thugs-lawyer-held-in-contempt-taken-into-custody\/77NH4GKN7NA27O4G2HL575NSDA\/\">accused<\/a> Judge Ural Glanville of holding a secret meeting with the prosecution and a witness named Kenneth Copeland without notifying the defense \u2014 in almost all cases, Georgia law prohibits this kind of \u201cex parte\u201d meetings from taking place. Steel said a source had told him that in the meeting, Copeland agreed to take the stand after the prosecution suggested that he could remain in jail until all the cases of all 26 defendants in the RICO trial are completed. This would constitute \u201ccoercion, witness intimidation, [and] ex parte communications,\u201d Steel said as he requested a mistrial.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262102\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">YOUNG THUG&#8217;S LAWYER HAS EVIDENCE OF COERSION AND WITNESS INTIMIDATION BY THE JUDGE AND THE STATE<\/p>\n<p>THE JUDGE WANTS TO KNOW HOW HE FOUND OUT BUT STEEL ISN&#8217;T RATTING. THE JUDGE THREATENS STEEL WITH JAIL.<\/p>\n<p>WOODY ALSO APPARENTLY ADMITTED HE&#8217;S THE ONE WHO KILLED NUT<\/p>\n<p>CORRUPTION. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/faGHjcQL21\">pic.twitter.com\/faGHjcQL21<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 THUGGERDAILY \u3072 (@ThuggerDaily) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ThuggerDaily\/status\/1800225238904684831?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262098\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            The accusations seem even more serious in light of Judge Glanville\u2019s response. Rather than deny them, the Judge repeatedly asked Steel to reveal his source. \u201cYou got some information you shouldn\u2019t have gotten,\u201d Glanville said, more outwardly concerned with <i>how<\/i> the information had been concerned than its content, a position that many observers thought lent credence to the allegations. After Steel\u2019s steadfast refusals, Judge Glanville placed him in contempt and ordered a bailiff to remove him from the courtroom. By the end of the day, Steel was allowed to return but ordered to spend 20 days in jail over 10 weekends; Steel requested that he be allowed to serve his sentence in the same jail as Thug, to which Glanville agreed. (Steel\u2019s firm declined to comment when reached by The FADER.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Shock reverberated online from stan accounts like @ThuggerDaily (who launched <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThuggerDaily\/status\/1800239097467871743\">the hashtag #FREESTEELE<\/a> [sic]) to members of the Georgia legal community. Tweets from Andrew Fleischman, a Georgia criminal defense attorney and partner at Sessions &amp; Fleischman, captured the tenor of most of the responses I saw: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ASFleischman\/status\/1800278987924455867\">the ex parte meeting was extremely unusual and likely against the law<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ASFleischman\/status\/1800322147241394352\">the contempt order had a good chance of being overturned<\/a>, and the defense now has a great shot at overturning any conviction <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ASFleischman\/status\/1800239415404486801\">on the grounds of reversible error<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262099\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            The following day, Fleischman wasn\u2019t any less shocked by what he had seen. \u201cIt\u2019s really unprecedented,\u201d he told me over the phone from Atlanta. He added that the legal community was all on the same page in their disapproval (this was reinforced when around two dozen attorneys posted up outside the courtroom after Glanville\u2019s contempt order). \u201cI think pretty much everybody agrees it was crazy,\u201d Fleischman told me. \u201cThere&#8217;s nobody out there saying \u2018What this judge was doing was perfectly normal. Why make a big deal out of it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            So will Judge Glanville stay on the case? \u201cI would expect that you&#8217;ll have a recusal motion probably coming down the pipe today,\u201d Fleischman told me. However, it\u2019s initially up to Judge Glanville to decide on the motion. \u201cThey&#8217;re going to ask the judge to step aside and let another judge rule on it. Hopefully he does that. I think the rules require it.\u201d However, recusal motions can take a really long time: \u201cLike a year,\u201d Fleischman says, emphasizing that \u201cnothing happens fast\u201d in Georgia courts. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262100\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            If Glanville refuses to recuse himself, the defense will have to wait until the trial ends and launch an appeal. Glanville could be leaning against it at the moment, as he repeatedly stressed during the blow-up on June 10 that a Georgia appeals court could determine whether or not he did something improper. And while that may appear to a layperson (like myself) to be an egregious and clear-cut denial of due process, Fleischman says it\u2019s something he hears all the time. \u201cIt&#8217;s to say that this is my best decision, and if you disagree, you can take it up with the court. [It\u2019s] a way of cutting off debate. I wouldn&#8217;t read into it more than that. I don&#8217;t love when judges say it, but they do say it a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            As for this development\u2019s consequences on the future of the prosecution, there is now a slim chance for the entire case to be dismissed. \u201cI think it&#8217;s possible that if a recusal passes and a mistrial happens,\u201d Fleischman explains, \u201cthey might say double jeopardy law is implied. For reasons that are complicated and hard to explain, if the state <i>tries<\/i> to get a mistrial, if they mess up in that way, then you can sometimes force them to not be allowed to retry the case, because you&#8217;re saying, \u2018Hey, you were deliberately messing up my trial, and that means you don&#8217;t get another shot at it.\u201d Proving that the state botched the trial on purpose might be difficult.
