\n Andrew McCarthy said he credits his Pretty in Pink<\/em> co-star\u00a0Molly Ringwald for getting his role in the 1986 iconic film.<\/p>\n

\n The actor, whose new Hulu documentary\u00a0Brats<\/em> dropped on Thursday, recently looked back at John Hughes\u2018 teen rom-com and how he got cast as heartthrob Blane McDonnagh. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThat part was written for a square-jawed, big, hunky, you know, quarterback and Molly got me that part,\u201d McCarthy recalled to Entertainment Tonight<\/a><\/em>. \u201cI auditioned and Molly said, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s who I would fall for. He\u2019s dreamy. He\u2019s poetic.\u2019 And so John Hughes went, \u2018Really? That wimp?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The Resident<\/em> actor continued, \u201cHe listened to Molly, which is what John did. John honored, not just on screen but in real life, John listened and respected young people. So, I was miscast in a way. I made what could [have] been a jerk have some sensitivity, so there was some empathy towards him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Pretty in Pink<\/em> follows Andie (Molly Ringwald), an outcast at her Chicago high school, who must choose between dating her quirky classmate Duckie (Jon Cryer), who has a crush on her, or one of the rich and popular kids, Blane (McCarthy).<\/p>\n

\n McCarthy said his character\u2019s personality was another reason \u201cwhy at the end we had to reshoot the whole ending because, you know, the movie\u2019s a fairytale so you have to give the girl what she wants.\u201d Hughes changed the movie\u2019s original ending \u2014 which had\u00a0Andie and Duckie end up together \u2014 after test screen audiences expressed their dissatisfaction with it.<\/p>\n

\n The Orange Is the New Black<\/em> actor previously shared that he actually wanted to quit the movie after reading the script<\/a> with the original ending.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI didn\u2019t read the script until I was on the plane out to Los Angeles, and I was shocked that Blane turned out to be sort of spineless,\u201d McCarthy told\u00a0The New Yorker<\/em> in 2021. \u201cWhen I landed, I called [my agent] and said, \u2018You\u2019ve got to get me out of this movie! This guy\u2019s a jerk. He\u2019s just, like, a wimpy loser.\u2019 And they said, \u2018Honey, you read the script. You knew what it was.\u2019 And I was, like, \u2018Um \u2026 yeah, OK.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
