The system could predict the size of a harvest months in advance \u2014 saving farmers time, money, and water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers from Chile, Spain, and the UK\u2019s National Robotarium developed the algorithm. The Robotarium is a centre for robotics and AI based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The team looks to address a global problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn countries all across the world, farmers often rely on manual methods to estimate their yields, which can have a significant error margin,\u201d said lead researcher Fernando Auat Cheein, an associate professor at the National Robotarium.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agriculture uses around 70% of the world\u2019s freshwater and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2006\/03\/farms-waste-much-of-worlds-water\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wastes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> almost half of it. Around 50% of the fruit and vegetables grown for human consumption are also<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/in-action\/seeking-end-to-loss-and-waste-of-food-along-production-chain\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lost<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flower-counting AI could reduce this waste. Sign up now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy focusing their efforts on areas of the farm that are expected to yield the most fruit, farmers can optimise resources, reduce their environmental footprint, and maximise both the quantity and quality of their harvest,\u201d said Cheenin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team has already tested the AI at an orchard in Spain. It predicted flower counts there with 90% accuracy. Manual counts typically range from 50% to 70%, for comparison. The system recognises the unique patterns, shapes and colours of flowers even when they overlap or are partially obscured.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In September, the researchers will validate the AI\u2019s predictions against the real peach harvest. If the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach proves effective, they believe it could be adapted for other important crops such as apples, pears, and cherries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe principles behind this <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> could be applied to a wide range of fruit crops worldwide, including those grown in the UK,\u201d said Cheein. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The system arrives in rapidly changing times for agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farming is one of the world\u2019s oldest industries, but also one of the<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/10-things-you-should-know-about-industrial-farming\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">least efficient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Increasingly, however, farmers are adopting technologies like AI, drones, and robots in a bid to make their jobs easier, greener, and more profitable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, German startup<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constellr<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has developed a satellite-based crop monitoring system that helps farmers identify crop damage days or even weeks in advance.
