{"id":624792,"date":"2024-06-19T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-19T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/fargos-jon-hamm-on-mad-men-marriage-morning-show-jennifer-aniston\/"},"modified":"2024-06-19T16:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T13:00:00","slug":"fargos-jon-hamm-on-mad-men-marriage-morning-show-jennifer-aniston","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/fargos-jon-hamm-on-mad-men-marriage-morning-show-jennifer-aniston\/","title":{"rendered":"#Fargo&#8217;s Jon Hamm on Mad Men, Marriage, Morning Show, Jennifer Aniston"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In January of 2022, Jon Hamm starred in a commercial titled \u201cEveryone But Jon Hamm.\u201d The minute-long spot, for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le TV+, played off the idea that everyone in the industry seemed to have a television show but him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    When the concept was first pitched, Hamm hesitated. \u201cI was like, \u2018There\u2019s a version of this that could go terribly wrong \u2014 just thirsty and weird,\u2019\u202f\u201d he says. But he knew the director and trusted that he\u2019d strike the right tone. So, they moved forward: Hamm, on the couch, scrolling through a carousel of familiar faces with projects on the platform. \u201cSamuel L. Jackson, Billie Eilish, Tom Holland, Chris Evans. What about Jon Hamm?\u201d he says, to the camera. \u201cJen and Reese, no Jon? Feels like a missed opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Now, two and a half years later, he jokes, \u201cI can\u2019t stop working for Apple.\u201d He even did a season of <em>The Morning Show<\/em>, and he\u2019s poised to do more \u2014 assuming he can carve out time from filming his other Apple TV+ <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, <em>Your Friends and Neighbors.<\/em> In between, he starred in the fifth installment of FX\u2019s <em>Fargo<\/em>, led the voice cast of Fox\u2019s <em>Grimsburg<\/em>, released a second season of the comedy <em>Good Omens<\/em>, shot a new drama from Taylor Sheridan and reprised his iconic role as Don Draper in, of all places, Jerry Seinfeld\u2019s Pop-Tart movie.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   alignleft size-thr-medium alignleft lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:336px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((435\/336)*100%);\">\n<p>                        <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/19cover.hires-2024.jpg?w=336\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"435\" width=\"336\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\"><span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">Jon Hamm was photographed Feb. 27 in Topanga Canyon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                                    <cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Photographed by Gavin Bond<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    So, at 53, the newly married Hamm is back in the zeitgeist in a way that he hasn\u2019t been since <em>Mad Men <\/em>ended nearly a decade ago. His absence was partially by design \u2014 or, at least, a predictable byproduct of the smaller, quirkier bets he placed, including the critically adored reimagining of <em>Fletch<\/em>, which he\u2019s eager to reprise. \u201cPeople were chucking all kinds of stuff at him,\u201d says his frequent collaborator and close pal John Slattery, \u201cand I think that he\u2019s played it smartly, career-wise, just finding the best parts he could as opposed to some of the choices where you go, \u2018Oh, that\u2019s a good paycheck.\u2019\u202f\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>Fargo<\/em> writer-director Noah Hawley conceived of Sheriff Roy Tillman, a MAGA Marlboro Man, with Hamm in mind. He needed someone the audience couldn\u2019t help but like on some level despite his deplorable behavior, and Hamm demonstrated a gift for that with Draper, the hard-drinking, smoking, womanizing \u201960s ad man. \u201cJon is a kind of American man that doesn\u2019t seem to exist anymore,\u201d says Hawley. \u201cAnd there\u2019s always something about <em>Fargo<\/em> where, in this region of the country, it\u2019s contemporary but it\u2019s also somehow 1982 and 1965, and Jon has that quality \u2014 he\u2019s sort of out of time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    On <em>The Morning Show<\/em>, it was Aniston\u2019s idea to cast Hamm as her love interest \u2014 and she\u2019s enjoyed playing opposite him so much, she\u2019s now trying to will a rom-com into existence. (For the record, the genre is also \u201ctremendously appealing\u201d to Hamm, as is reteaming with Aniston.) \u201cJon\u2019s one of those rare combinations of a gorgeous face and extreme talent both dramatically and comedically,\u201d she says of an actor who\u2019s as comfortable hosting <em>Saturday Night Live <\/em>as he is playing a brooding antihero for seven seasons \u2014 though the latter weighed more heavily on him, as evidenced by his post-<em>Mad Men <\/em>overhaul, which included a stint in rehab and the demise of a long-term relationship.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Over the course of a few hours and several cups of coffee at The Corner Bistro in Manhattan, where Hamm\u2019s currently filming, he opens up about navigating fame, embracing therapy and wanting kids. Has it waned since the show ended? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    It\u2019s waxed and waned. It\u2019s a pigmentation thing. Michael Jackson had it. It affects the Black community significantly more because you have melanin in your skin and it goes away. But I remember waking up one day while shooting the pilot, and it looked like someone had dropped bleach on my chin. Then I looked at my hands and shins, and they had these patches on them. I went to see a couple of doctors, and they were like, \u201cYou can try this cream. We don\u2019t really have a solution. But you\u2019re white, it\u2019s probably fine.\u201d Which is what people have said to white people their whole life: \u201cYou\u2019re white, you\u2019re probably fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Now, nearly 10 years removed from <\/strong><strong><em>Mad Men<\/em><\/strong><strong>, has your perspective on the experience changed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    A hundred percent. You go through it and it\u2019s happening to you \u2014 all the notoriety, the press, the fame. But it\u2019s a thing where I look back on it, and I wish I would\u2019ve paid more attention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>As in, enjoyed it more?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Yeah, kind of. Because it\u2019s happening to you so viscerally and it\u2019s such a swirl all at once and there\u2019s no guidebook, and you go, \u201cShit, man.\u201d But it\u2019s fun to be at the center of the conversation for our business. I\u2019ve had a bit of that with <em>Fargo<\/em>. And it\u2019s nice to be back in the conversation, to be part of something you\u2019re proud of and that\u2019s hitting people in a way that they want to talk about it. And that\u2019s what <em>Mad Men<\/em> was and still is. Anna [Osceola, his actress wife] and I came to this bar the other night for a burger, and some fucking 25-year-old kid was like, \u201cOh my God, <em>Mad Men<\/em>\u2018s so good.\u201d And I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWhy is it good to you? Look, I\u2019ve steadily worked since <em>Mad Men<\/em>. I\u2019ve not had a down year. I call my business manager once a month and go, \u201cHow are we doing?\u201d And he says, \u201cWe\u2019re good.\u201d But there\u2019s work and then there\u2019s work that people put on magazine covers. And I\u2019ve had so many people come up and want to talk about <em>The Morning Show<\/em>. <em>Fargo<\/em>, too. People will literally whisper, \u201cJesus, I really loved you in <em>Fargo<\/em>.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cYou can say it out loud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>I\u2019ll admit, I had to watch some of <\/strong><strong><em>Fargo<\/em><\/strong><strong> through my fingers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    It was very dark. And being by myself in Calgary was dark in every way. I was very thankful I had a Peloton because I could at least get a sweat going. But it was a hard job. I also loved it. It\u2019s fun to play the bad guy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>I <\/strong><strong>hear you\u2019ll be returning to <\/strong><strong><em>The Morning Show<\/em><\/strong><strong>, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    I believe I am. It\u2019s a matter of scheduling, but my thing was, \u201cDon\u2019t bring me back just to bring me back. You pushed back \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Well, because what does that even mean? When my mom died [Hamm was 10 at the time], they gave me a book. You go, \u201cJesus Christ, maybe a sit-down would\u2019ve been a little more helpful?\u201d But it was St. Louis in the \u201980s. I mean, I didn\u2019t meet another kid that had divorced parents until I was in ninth grade. Ninth grade! It was just a different time. And the availability of support or any of that, it wasn\u2019t there. It was Cub Scouts or church or\u00a0sports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>When did you first go to therapy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    After my dad died [a decade later]. My [half] sister was like, \u201cYou are spiraling. You need help.\u201d And I was like, \u201cNo, I don\u2019t. No, I don\u2019t.\u201d Then you eventually go, \u201cOh, yeah, I do.\u201d And if you\u2019re smart enough or present enough in your own feelings, you go, \u201cThis is actually tremendously helpful.\u201d And that\u2019s what it was. I went to therapy; I got put on Prozac and was pulled out of the spiral that I was in. I got my brain chemically altered, and I was like, \u201cOK, this is clearly something that I needed.\u201d I check in with it all the time. I\u2019m still in therapy. I have a wonderful therapist. And I understand that when I\u2019m \u2014 \u201cdistracted\u201d is the wrong word, but when I\u2019m not present \u2014 that\u2019s when I can start to spiral into something that\u2019s not healthy. And I go, \u201cI don\u2019t want to do that. I want to be healthy. I want to be happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>You\u2019ve often said it took you years to break into this business. What was the feedback early on? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    I just didn\u2019t fit. I was the guy who was 25 but looked 35. It\u2019s like I fell between two barstools. I mean, I didn\u2019t look like I was in high school when I was in high school. I don\u2019t know if it was losing my parents, but I looked older.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Then, finally, <\/strong><strong><em>Mad Men<\/em><\/strong><strong> came.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    I got the <em>Mad Men <\/em>script, and I was like, \u201cShit, this is really good.\u201d And it\u2019s a good lesson in not getting ahead of yourself because I remember thinking, \u201cThey\u2019re never going to cast me.\u201d Because I\u2019d had an experience with another really good script that I read and I was like, \u201cI would do anything to get this part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>What was it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    It was <em>The West Wing<\/em>. Rob Lowe\u2019s character, Sam. I thought, \u201cI could murder this part.\u201d And I was great in the audition, but I saw the casting director\u2019s face, and I knew this part\u2019s already cast. Then it was like, \u201cOh, it\u2019s Rob Lowe. OK, I get it.\u201d So I thought the same thing would happen on <em>Mad Men<\/em>. I\u2019ll give a great audition, and they\u2019ll give it to a movie star. The first time I went in, I was the only person auditioning, it was so early in the process. And then as I\u2019d go back in and go back in, I started seeing names that I recognized on the sign-in sheet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Including Rob Lowe\u2019s, no?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Rob never auditioned, but he was definitely under consideration. And Lacey Rose Matthew Weiner, God bless him, basically said, \u201cWe can\u2019t have a superstar. If Rob Lowe plays this part, it\u2019ll be the Rob Lowe show, and we don\u2019t want that. You\u2019re older than your years. And you have more experience than most kids and a different outlook or approach to life. And I still think about it that way. My friends that have parents that are still married or still alive, and it\u2019s not a judgment either way, it\u2019s just different. It\u2019s a different way of going through life, and I don\u2019t really wear it on my sleeve, but obviously Matt picked up on that, and it worked for Don Draper, for sure. There was something haunted in Don.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>You\u2019ve suggested that you think that story is apocryphal. Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Well, Matthew\u2019s definitely a person who takes a lot of credit for things that, in retrospect, he didn\u2019t necessarily think of at the time. But God bless him, it\u2019s a good story. Print the legend, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>It often felt like you were exhausted by the Don Draper worship. Is that a misread?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Jimmy Gandolfini, whom I knew a little bit, had a similar relationship to Tony Soprano, and Bryan Cranston had it with Walter White. The character got celebrated for the wrong reasons. People thought that Don was this paragon of masculinity or whatever. There were so many think-pieces, and you go, \u201cWait, he was pretty fucked up.\u201d And I was very happy with how Matt ended the story, but it was also hard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Did you talk to Cranston and Gandolfini about those challenges, including how to move on? <\/strong><strong>Like, an antihero support group.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Never specifically. But Jimmy and I have a very interesting connection because when he passed away, his son, Mikey, reached out to me, and I\u2019ve been a bit of a mentor to him. He said, \u201cMy dad told me that you were a good guy.\u201d I literally was like, (<em>pantomimes balling<\/em>), \u201cOK, let\u2019s be friends.\u201d And he is. He\u2019s my buddy. And Bryan, we did one of our first photo shoots together for AMC\u2019s new lineup. He\u2019s in his tighty-whities and a chemical apron and I\u2019m in a suit with a cigarette. He\u2019s like, \u201cYou got the better deal on this.\u201d Turns out he got a pretty good deal, too. But yeah, he\u2019s been a great friend and a good source of wisdom. You go through things like that, and there are very few people you can commiserate with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>I was only half joking about the <\/strong><strong>antihero support group.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    It\u2019s the \u201cWhat\u2019s next?\u201d That\u2019s the thing. You can talk to anybody from <em>Friends<\/em>, it\u2019s the same thing. We\u2019re all just finding our way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>What were your fears rooted in<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    I don\u2019t think there were any fears coming out of it. It was exhaustion, and relief. I was going through a lot in my personal life at that point, too. It was just managing all of that and thinking, \u201cI just want to go away for however long and reboot,\u201d which I did, and that was helpful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>What does \u201creboot\u201d mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Just reengage with a life that isn\u2019t Don Draper \u2014 that isn\u2019t this character and isn\u2019t this schedule. My life had been defined by this one track, and it was a lot. It was nice to be able to take the Etch a Sketch and just shake it and start over. It was also hard, but I needed to go reboot the system. And then I got to go do a lot of cool work, whether it was <em>Baby Driver <\/em>or <em>Beirut<\/em>, with people that I really respected, and it wasn\u2019t Don Draper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>At one point, Weiner wanted you to be in his film, too, no<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Yeah, and he asked me to do a part in <em>The Romanoffs<\/em>, too. How? Why? Tell me everything.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    I was of two minds. I told Jerry, \u201cI don\u2019t enter into this lightly. I\u2019m not trying to be too precious about this, but I don\u2019t want to devalue it.\u201d He goes, \u201cI understand that, but this would be very funny.\u201d Then I called Slattery and said, \u201cIf you don\u2019t do it, I won\u2019t do it, but it could be really funny.\u201d He goes, \u201cWhy wouldn\u2019t we do it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>What did it feel like to be back in the suit and the slicked back hair?<\/strong><br \/>I look at pictures now and God, I\u2019m, like, 20 pounds heavier, 10 years older, and it\u2019s just like, yuck. But it was literally like putting on a very familiar, very comfortable suit. You\u2019re just like, \u201cOh shit, I can do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Do you need Weiner\u2019s permission to revive the character? Or do you give him a heads up?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    No. Maybe I should have? But I didn\u2019t and I wouldn\u2019t. I think I have a legitimate claim to ownership over that character as much as he does.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Are you two still close?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    I don\u2019t see him much, but I\u2019ll text him probably once a month. For better or for worse, that guy gave me my career, and I love him and can\u2019t wait to see what he does next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>It feels as though he\u2019s in that nebulous place in culture where I\u2019m not sure if he was canceled. I think he fell into the #MeToo bucket [with allegations of sexual harassment, which he denied].<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    That was a fun time with all of that coming down and going, \u201cWhere does anything fall? And are we allowed to have the conversation or is it just immediately shut down? And is it binary or is it a continuum?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>In the early days of the movement, it seemed to be quite binary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    I think we\u2019ve moved through that. And listen, there definitely needed to be a reckoning of some sort. But the binary situation felt very unhelpful because it was tarring a lot of people with a similar brush, where you\u2019re like, \u201cOh, is that the same? Because it doesn\u2019t feel like it\u2019s the same at all.\u201d I felt that with Aziz Ansari, like, \u201cWait a minute, this doesn\u2019t feel the same as Harvey [Weinstein].\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Legacies get <\/strong><strong>tarnished, too<\/strong><strong>. Do you worry about that with <\/strong><strong><em>Mad Men<\/em><\/strong><strong>? Next year marks 10 years since it ended, and I\u2019m not sure the media will jump to honor him or the show in the way it otherwise would have.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Or maybe they will. Will it be something I\u2019d want to watch?\u201d That\u2019s <em>Keeping Up With the Joneses <\/em>or <em>Tag<\/em>. These are not movies that are going to move the needle as some great cinematic achievement, but I got to work with some of the funniest people on the planet and I had a blast. And that\u2019s the decision-making process. Obviously, I was newly single and sober and not sober, so all of these things were happening in my life as well, and work was very much a guiding light for me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>At some point during the run, you met Matt Damon at an awards show, and he said \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cI want to meet the guy who\u2019s going to take my parts.\u201d And you\u2019re like, \u201cOh, right, even Matt Damon understands that it\u2019s a generational biz.\u201d I mean, it\u2019s hard. It\u2019s fucking hard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Was there a time when you were competing for roles with the Matt Damons and Ben Afflecks?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    There was certainly a version of, \u201cIs this what you want? Do you want to be Ben Affleck?\u201d And I worked with Ben on<em> The Town<\/em>, and I was like, \u201cOK, I get that, that\u2019s a certain path, but I don\u2019t know if I want that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Why not?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    I love Ben, he\u2019s a wonderful actor and filmmaker, but I was like, \u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s for me.\u201d I wanted to do different things instead of just being a leading man, whatever that is. And I don\u2019t know how different my career would have been, but I know it hasn\u2019t been the traditional leading man thing. Maybe it\u2019s because I am a little more quirky. I know I look like I should be that guy \u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>And if you look like that guy, and can act like that guy, the industry often pushes you to be that guy, which means you had to opt out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Yes. I\u2019ve turned down a lot of things and other things have come my way, like <em>Gone Girl<\/em>, and I just wasn\u2019t able to do them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Who is still on your collaborator wish list?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Guys like Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Bong Joon Ho \u2013 all these tremendous lions of the cinema, so to speak. But there\u2019s also people like Julio Torres, who\u2019s phenomenally gifted. I\u2019ve had my eye on him since he was writing for <em>SNL<\/em>. I remember going to a show, Emma Stone was hosting, and there was this weird outlier sketch called \u201cWells for Boys,\u201d and I asked my friend, \u201cWho wrote that?\u201d She says, \u201cJulio Torres, keep an eye on that name.\u201d And I said, \u201cI sure will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>The parts you passed on, some of that was superhero fare. Correct?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Yeah. And it\u2019s not like they were saying, \u201cWe want you to be Iron Man.\u201d But there were a lot of conversations, and I\u2019m still in those. I talk to the guys that run Marvel and DC. And I\u2019m a comic book nerd. So, we\u2019ll see. Even that part of the industry is changing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>You passed on <em>Green Lantern<\/em>, did you not?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    That was one I definitely didn\u2019t want to do. But I\u2019ve pitched myself for a couple parts of the Marvel universe, I don\u2019t want to say what exactly, but it was a part of a comic book that I really liked. I was like, \u201cAre you going to do this story?\u201d And they were like, \u201cYeah, we\u2019re actually thinking of that.\u201d I go, \u201cGood. I should be the guy.\u201d So maybe it\u2019ll work out. But I look at a guy like Jeff Goldblum\u2019s career \u2014 and I know Jeff a bit, we used to have the same therapist \u2014 and I\u2019m just like, \u201cGod, how awesome to be able to do all the things he\u2019s done.\u201d He had his leading man phase, and he does Marvel and he\u2019ll just roll through and steal the scene, and then he\u2019s doing commercials and he\u2019s funny as shit. I see him out and he\u2019s happy. So, consciously or not, I\u2019m modeling my life to be that: varied and happy and fulfilled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>I\u2019ve heard you say that your agents wanted to keep negotiating on <\/strong><strong><em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em><\/strong><strong>, and you were adamant that they just take the offer. You really wanted to do it. How often does that happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    It feels like it happens pretty often with me. I\u2019m like, \u201cLet\u2019s not fuck it up, I just want to do it.\u201d <em>Morning Show <\/em>was like that. \u201cMake the deal, whatever it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>At the same time, you\u2019ll fight for more when you feel it\u2019s warranted, as you did on <\/strong><strong><em>Mad Men<\/em><\/strong><strong>, right?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    There was definitely a moment on <em>Mad Men <\/em>where I was wildly underpaid, and that was corrected. And you go, \u201cOK, good.\u201d But it came with a fair amount of wrestling. I was like, \u201cGuys, here\u2019s the deal, I will walk away from this. You need to know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>And you were prepared to do that<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Absolutely. It was after season four, which was really difficult for me. I was like, \u201cCall my bluff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Nobody in that cast wanted to disappoint you. Was that something you were cognizant of?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    You can be a leader that people follow with bad examples, or you can be a leader that people follow with good examples. Something happened in the last four, five years, where I got really, really comfortable doing what I do, like I\u2019m invited to the party. I was talking to Billy Crudup, and I revere Billy, and he goes, \u201cMan, do you still get freaked out about all this?\u201d I said no. I let that go at some point. I used to think, \u201cI\u2019m not going to be good enough,\u201d and all that. But there\u2019s always take two. And they don\u2019t use the bad takes. So, yeah, I like where I am. I\u2019m a happy guy. And I\u2019ve worked hard to get here, and it\u2019s not been a steady upward climb. There have been setbacks and difficulties, but that\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>You also got married last year. Had marriage been important to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    I didn\u2019t look at marriage as a thing. Obviously, my parents were not married long, so I don\u2019t have a model to look at and go, \u201cOh, this is how one finds happiness.\u201d I just knew at a certain point I wanted to be with this person. But when I proposed, I was terrified. I was like, \u201cWhat am I doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>Terrified of what, exactly?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    I don\u2019t know. I just remember feeling, \u201cThis is really scary.\u201d Then going, \u201cWell, it probably means it\u2019s worthwhile.\u201d And my wedding day was perfect. Everybody I love was there. It was so emotional, and it felt right. I was like, \u201cOK, I guess this is a thing.\u201d We did it [where they had shot the <em>Mad Men <\/em>finale], which was also amazing. Again, it was like a reset, a reboot, a reframe, a reimagining, nine years later, almost to the day. So, it\u2019s been great. And I hope it turns into kids. It\u2019s not lost on me that I\u2019m 53. I will be the old dad, but so it goes. It could be a good thing. We\u2019ll see.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <strong>I had asked Slattery what was the question he\u2019d want me to ask you, to which he said, \u201d \u2018How much money do you have?\u2019 No, seriously, ask him how much.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Enough, Slattery.
