in the wrong hands, could be easily considered corny or naive. But in Minona Volandova\u2019s case, her openhearted electro-pop is so genuine in its optimism, deep desire for connection, and P.L.U.R.-style compassion, it\u2019s hard not to smile at least once while listening to her debut LP, <i>BELIEVE<\/i>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262054\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            A classically trained guitarist armed with an ultra-versatile modular synth, Volandova was raised in the shadow of the Soviet Union\u2019s dissolution. Growing up so disconnected from the rest of the world, she gravitated toward music once Kazakhstan was finally free of the USSR\u2019s colonialist censorship and able to interact with artists and cultures from around the world. Volandova was enraptured by the brightness of Britpop, the fluorescent twitch of \u201880s new wave, and the bombastic oomph of Eurodance, resulting in her love of a catchy hook, strong beat, and upbeat delivery of lyrics written in Kazakh, English, and regional Russian dialects. Unsurprisingly, it also has its political moments, informed by Volandova\u2019s own past experience with Soviet cultural suppression and Russia\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/global-conflict-tracker\/conflict\/conflict-ukraine\">ongoing invasion of Ukraine<\/a>, which forced her <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.popmatters.com\/men-seni-suyemin-fave-five\">to leave<\/a> her burgeoning career in St. Petersburg, like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/who-are-the-russians-leaving-their-country\/a-61364390\">many other artists and intellectuals<\/a> under the threat of being <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/russiapost.info\/digest\/rackdown\">blacklisted<\/a> or arrested. Over the past few months, thousands of creatives, entertainers, and writers have fled the country, including director Kirill Serebrennikov, who used <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/lifestyle\/cannes-russian-director-criticises-trial-director-playwright-2024-05-20\/\">the premiere of his new film at Cannes<\/a> to protest <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/russian-director-playwright-say-they-oppose-terrorism-start-trial-2024-05-20\/\">the trials<\/a> of a Russian playwright and a theater director.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262056\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Back in the safety of Kazakhstan though, Volandova has been able to reclaim her roots on songs like \u201cDark Waves,\u201d a shadowy track that makes use of Kazakhstan\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/e-history.kz\/en\/news\/show\/7637\">strong creative heritage<\/a> and regional folklore. In defiance of the USSR\u2019s concentration of cultural uniformity, Volandova sings  in Surzhyk \u2014 a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/langsci.wiscweb.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1012\/2019\/01\/Kent.pdf\">Russian-Ukrainian hybrid dialect <\/a>\u2014 alongside an updated melody inspired by an ancient song from the nearby Bryansk region. She even goes so far as to reference <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrinform.net\/rubric-defense\/3332825-day-of-defenders-and-defendresses-of-ukraine-celebrated-today.html\">Ukraine\u2019s Defenders Day<\/a> on the reverent \u201c14 October,\u201d honoring those fighting to keep the Iron Curtain from being closed once again. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262060\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Men Seni Suyemin feat. Her music is a buoyant reminder that while it\u2019s hard not to feel angry, afraid, and alone, we shouldn\u2019t lose hope.
