Today, the European Commission warned the tech giant that its App Store is in violation of the bloc\u2019s sweeping online competition rules.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Cupertino-based company is among the tech giants (designated as \u201cgatekeepers\u201d) that have to comply with the EU\u2019s landmark law, known as the Digital Markets Act (DMA).<\/p>\n<p>One of the act\u2019s fundamental provisions is the ban of anti-steering for app platforms. The regulator\u2019s preliminary findings determine that the App Store still prevents app developers from \u201cfreely steering consumers\u201d to alternative options.<\/p>\n<p>The Commission is also opening another non-compliance investigation into Apple\u2019s new contractual terms for third-party app developers. This includes the tech company\u2019s latest \u201cCore <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a> Fee,\u201d which charges \u20ac0.50 per installed app.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSteering is key to ensure that app developers are less dependent on gatekeepers\u2019 app stores and for consumers to be aware of better offers,\u201d EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Apple_delays_launch_of_AI_features_in_Europe\"><\/span>Apple delays launch of AI features in Europe<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Apple is delaying the EU launch of multiple anticipated product features, citing worries over the DMA\u2019s interoperability demands.<\/p>\n<p>This concerns the release of SharePlay Screen Sharing, iPhone Mirroring, and Apple Intelligence \u2014 the company\u2019s AI suite. Powered by OpenAI\u2019s technology, the services will include image generation, text summarisation, and a revamped version of Siri.<\/p>\n<p>In an email statement to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-06-21\/apple-won-t-roll-out-ai-tech-in-eu-market-over-regulatory-concerns?embedded-checkout=true\">a number of<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/6\/21\/24183251\/apple-eu-delay-ai-screen-mirroring-shareplay-dma\">media outlets<\/a>, Apple said that the DMA\u2019s interoperability rules \u201ccould force us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that risk user privacy and data security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the company expressed its commitment to work on a common solution with the EU.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond dealing with a potential blow to its sales in the bloc, Apple is also facing a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/05606b16-8c4d-4535-893e-af909fcf22f0\">\u20ac1.8bn fine<\/a> for unfair competition practices in music streaming \u2014 under the scope of the DMA.<\/p>\n<p>For any rule violation, the law can impose fines of up to 10% of a company\u2019s total worldwide turnover.
