It uses by-products from industries like steel and mining instead of fresh limestone, slashing emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re on track to producing cement that emits 95% less carbon than traditional methods while remaining just as strong and potentially even faster-drying,\u201d Oscar H\u00e5ll\u00e9n, CEO of Cemvision, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously told TNW<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vattenfall plans to use the green cement in the foundations of new wind turbines and power distribution centres. Ramsk\u00f6ld said that Vattenfall could also help Cemvision with R&amp;D at its \u201cconcrete laboratory\u201d in \u00c4lvkarleby, Sweden.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vattenfall is a founder of the World Economic Forum\u2019s First Movers Coalition. The alliance \u2014 which includes the likes of Airbus, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le, and Amazon \u2014 aims to decarbonise heavy industries like shipping, trucking, and cement production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concrete \u2014 a mixture of cement, sand, and water \u2014 is the second most used material on Earth after water. It is also one of the dirtiest, responsible for 8% of global CO2 emissions. That\u2019s four times greater than air <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Green_cement\"><\/span><b>Green cement\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green cement startups are experimenting with various new additives, chemistries, and methods in a bid to solve concrete\u2019s carbon conundrum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Heating limestone in a kiln causes calcium carbonate to break down into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. Around 60% of the cement industry\u2019s total emissions are a result of this process. By using certain industrial by-products, like slag from steelmaking, Cemvision sidesteps this chemical reaction entirely.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other 40% of cement\u2019s emissions come from the energy needed to superheat limestone in a kiln. Today most kilns are powered by coal, oil, and natural gas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cemvision is currently developing a kiln at its lab in Stockholm that will run on renewable electricity. Because the industrial waste it uses can be processed at lower temperatures, the startup needs much less energy to produce its cement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Filling_demand\"><\/span><b>Filling demand<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Swedish venture is one of several budding startups developing greener alternatives for the $400 billion global cement industry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US-based Brimstone has found a way to create<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/best-inventions-2023\/6326947\/brimstone-carbon-negative-cement\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbon-negative cement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, Rotterdam-based<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/paebbl.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paebbl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is using a proprietary processing method to store captured CO2 in building materials. Ex-basketball legend Rick Fox even recently became a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2024-04-17\/former-nba-star-rick-fox-s-next-act-green-concrete-entrepreneur\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green cement entrepreneur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Cemvision\u2019s founder H\u00e5ll\u00e9n, incoming regulations like the EU\u2019s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which takes effect in 2026, are pressuring the industry to clean up its act. The founder hopes his company will be well positioned to supply the demand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a vote of confidence for its potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>-changing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cemvision secured \u20ac10 million<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in March, in what it claims to be the most seed funding ever raised by a green cement startup.
