Drake\/Kendrick Lamar beef was how the shadow of AI affected it. The artists who made the songs as well as the fans who consumed them were forced to reckon in real time whether or not the songs were by the actual artists themselves or voice models trained on their likenesses. When \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HKH9p19PRLA\">Push Ups<\/a>\u201d leaked, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> erupted in a debate over its provenance: even Kendrick himself wasn\u2019t sure, referencing the query in his response track \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NPqDIwWMtxg\">euphoria<\/a>\u201d: \u201cam I battling ghosts or A.I.?\u201d Then came <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/metroboomin\/bbl-drizzy-bpm-150-mp3\">Metro Boomin\u2019s \u201cBBL Drizzy,\u201d<\/a> an instrumental based on a soul song generated from text prompts by comedian King Willonius \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1uW_AUwEv-0\">the full version of the A.I.-assisted track<\/a> is so convincing, it left many spinning conspiracies about how a song nearly half a century old could reference a Canadian r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er and Diddy\u2019s legal issues. Finally, Drake used voice models of Tupac and Snoop Dogg for &#8220;Taylor Made Freestyle,&#8221; a cringey gimmick in his Lamar feud that led to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vulture.com\/article\/tupac-shakur-drake-ai-lawsuit.html\">a cease-and-desist order from the Shakur estate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            A.I. influenced one of the year\u2019s biggest music stories, and it would be naive to think that represents the apex of its potential influence. Over the past week, many of the major record labels in the United States have indicated that they\u2019re taking it seriously.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262378\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262351\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Last Tuesday, Universal Music Group (UMG) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/universal-music-artists-get-access-to-ai-voice-cloning-tool-via-umgs-new-deal-with-tech-startup-soundlabs\/\">announced<\/a> a new partnership with SoundLabs, a music production company co-founded by the Grammy-winning producer BT. The goal, according to a press statement, is to use SoundLabs\u2019 music software plug-in MicDrop to create officially licensed voice models of UMG artists. The models will not be available to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> public, instead offering the promised \u201cmusic super-powers\u201d exclusively to the artists they\u2019re based on.<\/p>\n<p>            The release emphasizes that MicDrop is meant to supplement a given artist\u2019s creativity instead of replacing them entirely, as well as give artists control over their likenesses in a rapidly changing media landscape. \u201cSoundLabs&#8217; goal is to place powerful new compositional tools at artists&#8217; fingertips,\u201d the release says, \u201cwhile supporting proper management of their intellectual property. SoundLabs was founded with a foundational respect for intellectual property rights and is focused on helping artists retain creative control over their data and models.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262352\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Such a partnership, with its promises of ethical AI usage completely siloed to each modeled artist, might end up redundant thanks to the existence of AI programs freely available to the public that create unauthorized AI copies. UMG appears cognizant of this, teaming up with Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Records under the shepherding of the RIAA to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/major-record-companies-sue-ai-music-generators-suno-udio-for-mass-infringement-of-copyright\/\">launch a huge copyright infringement lawsuit against Suno and Udio<\/a>, the companies behind two of the most highly-regarded AI modeling softwares (Udio was used to create \u201cBBL Drizzy\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>            The lawsuits were filed in different states \u2014 Suno\u2019s in Boston and Udio\u2019s in New York City. The RIAA\u2019s Chief Legal Officer Ken Doroshow accuses Suno and Udio of \u201cstraightforward cases of copyright infringement involving unlicensed copying of sound recordings on a massive scale.\u201d He adds: \u201cThese lawsuits are necessary to reinforce the most basic rules of the road for the responsible, ethical, and lawful development of generative AI systems and to bring Suno\u2019s and Udio\u2019s blatant infringement to an end.\u201d The lawsuit seeks $150,000 in damages per infringement.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262353\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            A press release on the lawsuit sent by the RIAA makes the major labels\u2019 position clearer: those who control the levers of power in the music industry are focused on getting AI under their control. \u201cThe music community has embraced AI,\u201d RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier says, perhaps overstating things a tad, \u201cand we are already partnering and collaborating with responsible developers to build sustainable AI tools centered on human creativity that put artists and songwriters in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            It remains to be seen what real commitment the major labels have to ensuring their artists retain control of their likenesses. The lawsuit and UMG\u2019s SoundLabs partnership could be attempts to consolidate power with mere empty gestures at the autonomy of their artists; public attention and opinion will likely dictate the route they choose (and even if they emerge victorious, the labels will likely be playing legal whack-a-mole with open source programs like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/collection\/best-inventions-2023\/6327135\/so-vits-svc\/\">So-VITS-SVC<\/a>, the tool responsible for ghostwriter\u2019s \u201cheart on my sleeve,\u201d for years). Either way, the degree to which consent is utilized will dictate the kind of future AI creates.
