Few thought that a children\u2019s series<\/a> about a marmalade-loving bear could earn the critical acclaim that\u00a0Paddington<\/em><\/strong> has, but writer-director Paul King<\/strong> elevated a silly premise into some of the best and most heartwarming films of the decade. And in unprecedented times like these, we need Paddington more than ever. And we may be getting it, as King confirmed that\u00a0Paddington 3<\/em><\/strong> is still happening \u2014 just without him.<\/p>\n

What are the\u00a0Paddington\u00a0<\/em>movies without\u00a0Paul King\u2019s magic touch? We\u2019ll have to find out, as King revealed that he is handing the marmalade-making duties to a new director for\u00a0Paddington 3<\/em>. The British filmmaker told\u00a0Empire Magazine\u00a0(via Yahoo)\u00a0that, although the movies have been \u201cone of the great treats of my life,\u201d he will have to hand the treat of directing\u00a0Paddington 3<\/em> to someone else:<\/p>\n

\u201cAt some point, you just have to stop. It might be time for somebody else to do a twist on it. I\u2019m trying not to do a third bear movie, which is a huge, huge mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Yes, King, it is a mistake because I can\u2019t imagine the\u00a0Paddington\u00a0<\/em>movies without your whimsical directorial style and lighthearted touch that gave the beloved bear a Buster Keaton-esque edge. The\u00a0Paddington<\/em> movies are far better than they should be because of King, who directed and co-wrote both the first and second\u00a0Paddington<\/em> movies, the latter of which transcends expectations of the family film and delivers a lovely, visually dazzling and social<\/a>ly conscious story with a gonzo performance from\u00a0Hugh Grant<\/strong> as the villain.<\/p>\n

But King, who will remain on board as executive producer for\u00a0Paddington 3<\/em>, assures that, \u201cIt\u2019s not like Paddington dies at the end. He doesn\u2019t ascend into the sky on a rocket-powered marmalade jar.\u201d King\u2019s hand remains in the jar too with the script, which he confirmed has already been written, though he was not clear on whether he co-wrote it as he did with\u00a0Paddington,<\/em> which he penned with\u00a0Hamish McColl<\/strong>, or\u00a0Paddington 2<\/em>, which\u00a0Simon Farnaby<\/strong> co-wrote. King also hints that the franchise could even go beyond\u00a0Paddington 3<\/em> giving us more of the good-natured bear for years to come.<\/p>\n

Maybe if we\u2019re kind and polite enough, the world will right itself and King will return to the director\u2019s chair for\u00a0Paddington 3<\/em>. But the filmmaker admitted to Empire Magazine that he\u2019s\u00a0working on \u201cfar too much\u201d other material, which includes a new collaboration with Paddington 2<\/em> co-writer Farnaby and a long-gestating movie about Willy Wonka. Still, it\u2019s hard to imagine who could take King\u2019s place.<\/p>\n
