{"id":625701,"date":"2024-06-27T00:47:03","date_gmt":"2024-06-26T21:47:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/bachelor-team-acknowledges-franchises-issues-with-race-admits-to-letting-down-matt-james\/"},"modified":"2024-06-27T00:47:03","modified_gmt":"2024-06-26T21:47:03","slug":"bachelor-team-acknowledges-franchises-issues-with-race-admits-to-letting-down-matt-james","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/bachelor-team-acknowledges-franchises-issues-with-race-admits-to-letting-down-matt-james\/","title":{"rendered":"#\u2018Bachelor\u2019 Team Acknowledges Franchise\u2019s Issues With Race, Admits to Letting Down Matt James"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    After <em>The Bachelor\u2018<\/em>s issues surrounding race were in the spotlight during the ABC reality <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>\u2019 Television Critics Association presentation earlier this year, the show\u2019s producers are now acknowledging prior missteps. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    \u201cIt\u2019s hard to say out loud, that people of color didn\u2019t see themselves represented, that they did not see <em>The Bachelor<\/em> franchise as a safe place,\u201d franchise executive producer Bennett Graebner told the <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2024-06-26\/the-bachelor-bachelorette-producers-race-diversity\">Los Angeles Times<\/a><\/em> in a story published online Wednesday. \u201cWe didn\u2019t have a Black lead in this franchise for 15 years, and that\u2019s inexcusable. It created a vicious cycle, and it\u2019s taken a lot of work to get back to a place where we feel at least we\u2019re working for the positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Graebner and fellow <em>Bachelor<\/em> EPs Jason Ehrlich and Claire Freeland\u2019s sit-down with the publication regarding how the show handles race follows NPR journalist Eric Deggans\u00a0asking the trio about the topic at TCA in February. Deggans asked why the show has a \u201chard time dealing with racial issues in-depth,\u201d in light of previous Black leads Rachel Lindsay and Matt James having voiced issues with how the franchise addresses race. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    At the TCA event, none of the EPs directly answered the question, and after a stretch of silence, Deggans quipped, \u201cI guess we have our answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    In the conversation with the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, Freeland said, \u201cThe core value to this show is that everybody deserves to find love, regardless of race, ethnicity, background, faith.\u201d She added, \u201cThe only way we can do that in a truly fulsome way is to have people on the show that reflect the country we live in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Graebner told the outlet that the show \u201clet Matt down\u201d and went on to say, \u201cThat season went wrong on so many levels. We did not protect him as we should have. The finale of that season was the darkest day I\u2019ve had on this franchise. Here was this great Black man, and we should have been celebrating his love story. Instead, what we saw was a man burdened and overwhelmed by issues of racism. It was really sad for me personally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Freeland and Graebner called it a \u201cpriority\u201d to cast a Black Bachelor but did not specify how soon this may h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    James starred as the Bachelor for season 25 that aired in 2021, and he remains the only Black lead throughout the show\u2019s 28 seasons. James was critical of various aspects of how his season was handled, including the edit for an episode that showed him reuniting with his estranged father. \u201cToo often, we see dangerous stereotypes and negative depictions of Black fathers in media,\u201d James posted to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> shortly after the episode aired. \u201cAnd they have consequences when presented without context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Lindsay, who starred on <em>The Bachelorette<\/em> in 2017 as the first Black lead, has also criticized how James\u2019 season was handled. (More recent Black leads on <em>The Bachelorette<\/em> include Michelle Young in 2021 and Charity Lawson last year.) Garnering headlines during James\u2019 season was a resurfaced photo of contestant Rachael Kirkconnell attending an antebellum-themed party. Ultimately, Kirkconnell was the winner of James\u2019 season, and the couple remains together. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    Longtime <em>Bachelor<\/em> franchise host Chris Harrison exited his role in 2021 after he defended Kirkconnell earlier that year in an interview for <em>Extra<\/em> with then-correspondent Lindsay. Additionally, series creator Mike Fleiss stepped away from the franchise last year; two days after his exit was announced, he responded to a report that his departure followed an investigation into racial discrimination, with Fleiss acknowledging that he could have done more to engender diversity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n    <em>The Bachelorette<\/em> returns to ABC on July 8 with star Jenn Tran, who finished in fifth place on Joey Graziadei\u2019s recently concluded season of <em>The Bachelor<\/em>.
