Watch how they flutter between the trees, luciferin streaking through the dark. LUCY (Cooper B. Handy) glides from one contorted idiom to the next over a bevy of lush Surf Gang beats that thump and twinkle in equal measure. Six years in the making, this bioluminescent mixtape of humble anthems and charming lullabies marks a new high for LUCY\u2019s mesmerizing synthesis of hip-hop, pop, and punk rock.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Back in February, LUCY explained his songwriting <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach to me over the phone: \u201cI\u2019ll have a phrase that has a melody to it, and then I\u2019ll make a song around that.\u201d At the time, we were discussing \u201cWHAT SHE\u2019S HAVING,\u201d his airy and danceable contribution to Evilgiane\u2019s January mixtape <i>#HEAVENSGATEVOL.1<\/i>, which twists the cashier\u2019s refrain \u201cI can help whoever\u2019s next over here\u201d into an indelible earworm. The Western Massachusetts artist usually self-produces his own music, welding GarageBand presets into charmingly irregular forms, but he\u2019s been branching out a little more this year (see: January\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ulyssa.bandcamp.com\/album\/100-prod-i-v\"><i>100% PROD I.V.<\/i><\/a>). \u201cIt\u2019s not so much a switch I\u2019m making,\u201d he says of the collaborations. \u201cIt\u2019s more like experimenting, because when people send beats it\u2019s always very different&#8230;] all the emphasis goes on what I do with the vocals, rather than composing music.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262436\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LUCY (COOPER B HANDY) - JACK &amp; THE BEANSTALK PROD HARRISON #SURFGANG\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sIn8ZOZ8V3g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('262436');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content_block paragraph triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262437\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>             The first hints of LUCY\u2019s creative partnership with Surf Gang came in 2022 with the Ethereal-esque plugg ditty \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/lucy-music-ma\/leakhellhound-prod-evilgiane\">HELLHOUND<\/a>\u201d and pulsing Beatles sendup \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YCPU8IIC4Zo\">ALL YOU BLEED IS BLOOD<\/a>.\u201d They\u2019ve largely collaborated over email, Giane and Harrison sending beats and LUCY cutting verses in his bedroom. Eight of <i>JACK<\/i>\u2019s 11 songs were produced by Evilgiane, whose off-kilter percussion fits LUCY\u2019s free-associative counterpoint like an iron glove on a velvet fist.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cGiane has a really good way about rhythm,&#8221; LUCY told me. &#8220;Where he places the kicks and where he\u2019ll throw in a clap \u2014 it\u2019s not \u2018hard\u2019 to predict, but it\u2019s also not easy to predict. I\u2019ve heard a lot of beats where he\u2019ll throw in some percussion sound where it almost offsets the rhythm, but it doesn\u2019t actually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            Broadly, Evilgiane\u2019s production here is brighter and more diaphanous than the dense bangers he supplies Kendrick Lamar and FLEE with. Still he refuses to let the momentum lag, stuttering hi-hats and reverberating bass goading LUCY along. There\u2019s the woozy chimes of \u201cOLD FRIEND\u201d and the bleary-eyed intro \u201cSO BLESSED;\u201d the 8-bit lurch of \u201cSOMETHING WE LACK\u201d and the thunderstorm ripple of lead single \u201cSAME THING.\u201d Harrison\u2019s production swerves from the pensive title track to the levitating closer \u201cLYING;\u201d his work on standout \u201cCOMPATIBILITY\u201d splits the difference between \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XW7XYZJd6E4\">Dip<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_z-042RJ9SE\">Trust Me Danny<\/a>.\u201d These are definitely rap beats &#8212; it\u2019s easy to imagine 2016 Playboi Carti or KEY! finding crazy pockets on these tracks \u2014and LUCY approaches them with a steely focus on bars and hooks.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262438\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LUCY (COOPER B HANDY) - SAME THING PROD EVILGIANE AND CCURED #SURFGANG\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RaR3l_9346U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('262438');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262439\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            That may seem a bold claim when you hear LUCY sigh, \u201cI wanna see you, more or less \/ you wanna see me on a deathbed,\u201d or wail, \u201ca profit and a loss \/ is the saaaaaaame thing.\u201d His vocals can feel pinched, even nasal; you may get the idea he\u2019s unable to sing longer than thirty seconds without wavering out of tune. These conclusions wouldn\u2019t exactly be wrong, but they would be boring, like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/article\/2024\/jun\/26\/i-may-not-understand-jazz-but-i-know-enough-to-know-its-wonderful\">hating on jazz<\/a>. Listen a little closer to LUCY\u2019s voice and you can begin to tease threads out of the weave: traces of punk rock from his <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.papermag.com\/taxidermists-interview\">decade-plus collaboration<\/a> with Taxidermists-bandmate Sal McNamera, flashes of ILoveMakonnen and Young Thug. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was this whole thing in 2012 and 2013 where all of these rappers started singing, even if they weren\u2019t really good at it,\u201d LUCY told The FADER back in February. \u201cIt was a really cool moment because now it\u2019s almost the norm to have&#8230; that integrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><i>JACK &amp; THE BEANSTALK<\/i> refracts mainstream trap into something plainer and more plaintive, a window into LUCY\u2019s life of modest means and measured emotional outlook. \u201cI walk in the sand \/ The sands of time \/ you can\u2019t define \/ and take from me \/ what isn\u2019t mine,\u201d begins a typically meandering hook on the Red Hot Chili Peppers-interpolating \u201cLESS I KNOW.\u201d On the title track, an unhealthy relationship makes him feel so small, as if climbing up to a giant\u2019s castle in the clouds; \u201cI used to smoke a lot of weed, and I still do,\u201d he grins on \u201cHELLHOUND.\u201d Elsewhere, he\u2019s wondering if it\u2019s love or the drugs on \u201cCOMPATIBLE\u201d before tossing off the 03 Greedo-reminiscent couplet \u201cI been pretty nice for a decade \/ I feel like a drummer in a parade.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262440\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"COMPATIBLE\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HFOcM7nnLZI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('262440');\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262441\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            \u201cI do think my music instrumentally is very hip-hop based, but I don\u2019t consider myself a rapper or anything,\u201d LUCY said in February. His lyrics more readily recall <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SLv_bPF-dyM\">the readymade reconfiguration<\/a> of David Byrne than the freestyle sessions of Lil Wayne or Chief Keef, but LUCY doesn\u2019t belabor the process, preferring to finish songs in a single sitting. \u201cComing back to any art after you\u2019ve started, if you\u2019re in a different mind frame, you\u2019re not going to have the same energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            LUCY\u2019s dedication to keeping the energy up makes it blissfully easy to get lost in the wonky nightscape of <i>JACK &amp; THE BEANSTALK<\/i>, its swaying rhythms and gossamer melodies. The swirling haze of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/on.soundcloud.com\/zLCU5RbuhfWi7E4t9\">XTREMELY CAREFUL<\/a>\u201d is achingly gorgeous: \u201cI love the way you turn around \/ and the reasons you do,\u201d LUCY smiles.
