New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has backed down on a controversial new policy to remove dozens of American flags adorning the state\u2019s highway overpasses amid growing outrage.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t like what I heard,\u201d the Democratic governor told reporters of the briefly instituted policy, which sparked an outcry from police and veterans groups as well as Republican lawmakers.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve suspended that for the time being until we can find a good way forward,\u201d Murphy said.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cWe <\/span>are the greatest nation on E<\/span>arth even though we\u2019re\u00a0<\/span>far from perfect and our\u00a0<\/span>flag represents that\u00a0<\/span>nation.\u201d
<\/br><\/span><\/p>\n

People began hanging the flags above the New Jersey Turnpike in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, but the state agency that oversees the highways recently declared that they were in violation of state law and need to come down.<\/p>\n

The Turnpike Authority\u2019s rules prohibit \u201cdisplays, posters, or placards, or display any advertising matter of any kind \u2026 on the roadway,\u201d according to NJ.com.<\/p>\n

Robbinsville Township police union president Michael Slininger said his group had just paid for 12 replacements along the Turnpike and I-195, and was blindsided by the policy change, Fox News<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not known what happ<\/a>ened to the brand new flags that we put up, but we truly hope they were respectfully disposed of, if not displayed elsewhere,\u201d he posted on Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As word of the flag removals spread, two Republican state legislators threatened to take action if Murphy didn\u2019t reverse course and introduce a bill that would exempt Old Glory from the statute.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an instance where government oversight obviously is not needed,\u201d Sen. Declan O\u2019Scanlon and Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe clearly have a massive group of private citizens, veterans and police officers dedicated to ensuring that those flags are safely and securely hung, and respectfully maintained,\u201d they said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
