\n John McEnroe admits it\u2019s a challenge rising to the occasion during the US Open in the ESPN broadcast booth at empty Ashe Stadium.<\/p>\n

But McEnroe may even face a bigger hurdle during the French Open in late September.<\/p>\n

The Post has learned because of the pandemic, the NBC crew of McEnroe, Mary Carillo and Dan Hicks won\u2019t make the trip to Paris. Instead of heading to the City of Lights, McEnroe will work the matches remotely \u2014\u00a0 likely from a studio in Stamford, Conn.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom my understanding, with logistics and concern [about COVID-19], at this time no one is going,\u201d McEnroe told The Post at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n

The French Open announced Sunday it will host a limited amount of fans. The US Open decided to host none, making McEnroe\u2019s job a little tougher as he calls the silent matches.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m the lucky one,\u2019\u2019 McEnroe said. \u201cI\u2019m not the one out there. It\u2019s a lot tougher for players than it is for me. I think there\u2019s a similarity that commentators feed off energy. It\u2019s something I\u2019ve taken pride in over the last 28 years I\u2019ve done this. I want to bring that energy to the commentator\u2019s booth the same way hopefully I did on the tennis court. It\u2019s a key thing for me. It\u2019s something I\u2019m doubly aware of because it\u2019s so quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s completely bizarre and surreal, calling matches and walking around and nobody\u2019s there. You can never have imagined not only tennis, but all sports would be doing this right now.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Not all is quiet. The changeovers at Ashe sounds like a 1970\u2019s discotheque \u2014 something the Douglaston, Queens tennis legend disapp<\/a>roves of.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s deafeningly loud when they play music on the changeover,\u2019\u2019 McEnroe said. \u201cYou\u2019re like, \u2018what is going on here?\u2019 One second, it\u2019s nothing. Next second, I feel I have to put earplugs in. I don\u2019t know how the players are feeling about it. I love music but it\u2019s like, \u2018C\u2019mon.\u2019 Maybe I\u2019m just getting old. Or maybe they\u2019re afraid the players are going to fall asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the other hand, McEnroe admits he\u2019s pleasantly surprised at the level of tennis and fitness after a five-month layoff. The men\u2019s circuit had just one US Open tuneup.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m pretty impressed,\u2019\u2019 McEnroe said. \u201cI thought it would be making an adjustment to best-of-five after one event. That\u2019s tricky. Fortunately the heat hasn\u2019t been as much a factor as it could be otherwise we would\u2019ve seen guys dropping like flies. But the best players usually win no matter how much time off.\u201d<\/p>\n

The best men\u2019s player, Novak Djokovic, has been disqualified for accidentally striking a female linesman with a ball. On air, McEnroe said it\u2019s an incident in which the Serbian is \u201cgoing to be the bad guy the rest of his career.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

McEnroe is anxious to see who steps up and believes men\u2019s tennis needs a new jolt.<\/p>\n

\u201cYoung, fresh blood is important,\u2019\u2019 McEnroe said. \u201cIt\u2019s opened the door for the youngsters to step up and seize the opportunity.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

The only thing McEnroe likes about the fan-less Open is no traffic in or out. Otherwise\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sad,\u2019\u2019 McEnroe said. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely weird. The alternative is not playing. Early on, I had mixed feelings given the catastrophe that\u2019s taken place. But it wouldn\u2019t have made sense not to play tennis with other sports going on, though it\u2019s more difficult with players coming from all over the world.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving grown up in New York and being involved in some of my favorite matches I ever played here, there\u2019s nothing like a great New York crowd to lift up the players and spirits. Let\u2019s hope this won\u2019t go on much longer.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
