crushed in search rankings since Google\u2019s March 2024 core update, and as a result, some are laying off teams or downsizing budgets. <\/p>\n<p>However, many believe they are following Google\u2019s guidelines and have \u201chelpful content\u201d because the content comes from experience. What are they missing?<\/p>\n<p>Danny Ashton, founder of air purifier review site HouseFresh, wrote a passionate article about how \u201cGoogle is killing independent sites\u201d like HouseFresh, which lost 91% of its Google traffic, basically destroying the business.<\/p>\n<p>Ashton wrote, \u201cWe keep an eye on Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> and documentation because these updates can literally make or break our website. That said, we don\u2019t write for Google\u2019s robots and always make editorial decisions with our readers in mind.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-changed-nbsp\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_changed\"><\/span>What\u2019s changed?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From what I can see, after the Google March 2024 core update, many affiliate sites that don\u2019t have any significant brand search lost traffic. However, many marketers seem to believe that the large authority sites are outranking them and that small \u201cindependent\u201d sites can\u2019t compete.<\/p>\n<p>However, the problem isn\u2019t that smaller sites can\u2019t outrank large brands because of the site\u2019s overall authority. The problem is that smaller sites are not driving brand search.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that brand search is just how your audience will search out your website or offering after engaging with messaging about your product, service or ideas on another platform (e.g., press or <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sites-with-brand-search-are-ranking\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sites_with_brand_search_are_ranking\"><\/span>Sites with brand search are ranking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I pointed out the importance of brand search in my recent Search Engine Land article about how an ebike brand ranks in position 1 for high search volume and high competition keywords.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-air-purifier-brand-s-ranking\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Air_purifier_brands_ranking\"><\/span>Air purifier brand\u2019s ranking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For the keywords \u201cair purifier reviews\u201d and \u201cbest treadmills,\u201d Google replaced affiliate sites without brand searches with those that have brand searches.<\/p>\n<p>HouseFresh, an affiliate site that reviews air purifiers, lost its ranking and traffic after the March core update. Review articles from sites like The Spruce, which cover many home and garden topics, outranked them. <\/p>\n<p>The difference is that The Spruce has a significant brand search, while HouseFresh has title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arent when searching for the keyword \u201cbest treadmills.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>TreadmillReviews.net lost all its traffic for treadmill keywords, but now Garage Gym Reviews\u2019 best treadmill article ranks in position 1 and is growing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure The larger the bubble, the more keywords ranked in the top three.<\/p>\n<p>While these are not affiliate sites, the graph illustrates that Google places some kind of value on brand search.<\/p>\n<p>One thing seems certain, and it\u2019s that anyone doing SEO will have to learn how to build brand search traffic and not just rank for non-brand keywords. It measures how well your messaging resonates with your audience and how effectively it drives them to search for your brand after encountering your content or messaging.<\/p>\n<p>Consider this: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You have an audience segmentation platform that solves a major problem for brand managers at CPG (consumer packaged goods) brands. <\/li>\n<li>You have a few feature articles about your product in TechCrunch and other industry publications. <\/li>\n<li>Brand managers read that article and then search for your website on Google for more information. <\/li>\n<li>You just influenced an audience\u2019s search behavior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Brand search is a pivotal stage in your audience\u2019s online journey to solve a problem, create an opportunity, or find helpful content. You can cultivate this value through your content, expertise and the products or services you offer.<\/p>\n<p>Research indicates that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkwithgoogle.com\/consumer-insights\/consumer-journey\/connect-with-customers\/\">70% of online shoppers<\/a> turn to Google after learning about a product on social media, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2021\/05\/17\/more-americans-now-see-the-medias-influence-growing-compared-with-a-year-ago\/\"> <\/a><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2021\/05\/17\/more-americans-now-see-the-medias-influence-growing-compared-with-a-year-ago\/\">45% of Americans<\/a> believe that media influence is growing.<\/p>\n<p>This highlights that brand search is a direct result of how effectively you influence your audience\u2019s search behavior.
