A mom delivered an unforgettable reply when her daughter called her \u201cfat.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, my small daughter told me that she didn\u2019t want to be fat like me,\u201d Sharon Johnson, a mother of six in Utah, said in a TikTok video<\/a>. \u201cNow, instead of breaking down in tears or saying, \u2018We don\u2019t use the word fat,\u2019 I simply looked at her and said, \u2018Why is that, sweetheart?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Her 5-year-old daughter\u2019s answer: \u201cWell, because I want to run fast and you can\u2019t run fast, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson told her daughter that her speed has nothing to do with her weight.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018The reason why I can\u2019t run fast is because I haven\u2019t practiced running fast. I should be running more often so I can practice,\u2019\u201d Johnson said in the video.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018And did you know, just because someone has a thinner body, doesn\u2019t mean they can run fast?\u2019\u201d recalled Johnson. \u201cShe said, \u2018You know, I have a friend that\u2019s thin and she<\/em> can\u2019t run very fast!\u2019<\/p>\n

Johnson replied, \u201cI know, and that\u2019s because you can\u2019t tell what someone can do just based off what they look like.\u2019 She said, \u2018Huh. I guess so! Mom, do you think you could start running fast?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The mom went outside and ran four blocks.<\/p>\n

\u201cStop making excuses because you\u2019re fat,\u201d Johnson said in her video. \u201cIt\u2019s not the reason you\u2019re not doing things. The reason why you\u2019re not doing things is because you think<\/em> you can\u2019t do them because you\u2019re fat. When really, you can just go do things fat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson\u2019s commenters said hearing about the conversation was curative: \u201cI needed this as a child\u201d and \u201cGetting curious instead of defensive or judgmental \u2014 KUDOS to you!!\u201d<\/p>\n

Some were already living by Johnson\u2019s advice.<\/p>\n

\u201cI started doing taekwondo at 270 pounds. I love it!\u201d wrote a TikToker; a second commented, \u201cI love paddle boarding but I find myself being so self conscious the whole time I\u2019m out there; but there I am, out there doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an interview with TODAY.com, Johnson says she teaches her children to app<\/a>reciate what bodies can do<\/em>, not what they look like. She wants to believe it too.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been really hard for me to stifle my inner critic about body image without practice,\u201d Johnson tells TODAY.com<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve worked really hard to eradicate shame from my life and look at things objectively, which has been incredibly transformative in how I view my own body. There\u2019s power in saying it \u2014 and hearing it \u2014even if I force it.\u201d<\/p>\n

When her daughter previously commented on her \u201cbig belly,\u201d Johnson said she had answered, \u201cYes \u2014 isn\u2019t it cool how snuggly it is and that it grew you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Responding with neutrality, she says, removes the sting.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdults tend to assign ideas to concepts, saying, \u2018Shh \u2014 don\u2019t say the word fat!\u2019 when kids make observations and ask questions to understand the world,\u201d says Johnson. \u201cMy daughter wasn\u2019t trying to be mean \u2014 she made the correlation between my size and my abilities and I was able to correct her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson says her size isn\u2019t everything her daughter notices, adding, \u201cShe calls me beautiful and says she loves me.\u201d<\/p>\n
