Over slow, determined drums, she fingers her cello like a furious bassist, its C string rattling with the aftershock of her powerful plucks. As a narrator, though, she\u2019s less self-assured. \u201cQuiz\u00e1s haya o\u00eddos en el techo \/ Quiz\u00e1s alguien est\u00e1 del otro lado de la pared,\u201d she sings: Maybe there are ears in the ceiling. Maybe there\u2019s someone on the other side of the wall.<\/p>\n<p>            This paranoia reverberates throughout <i>Sentir que no sabes<\/i> (<i>Feel like you don\u2019t know<\/i>) \u2014 in the white-knuckled groove of \u201cKravitz,\u201d the soul-searching slow burn of \u201cPantalla azul,\u201d the claustrophobic minimalism of \u201cO\u00eddos,\u201d and the doomsaying repetition of \u201cQuieras o no.\u201d And that\u2019s just side A. <\/p>\n<p>            The discomfort is even more palpable in the album\u2019s instrumental cuts. Far from interludes, \u201cEl\u00e1stica\u201d (I &amp; II) and \u201cKitana\u201d hold some of the record\u2019s most excruciating moments, as the tension reaches its tipping point. The project also contains moments of gorgeous, cathartic release. It\u2019s a lovely, busy evening there, and our conversation lasts close to 90 minutes, enduring the odd interruption \u2014 seat changes, the start of the Turkey vs. Georgia Euro Cup match, a passerby enamored with Mabe\u2019s shoes. Through it all, though, she radiates the unflagging excitement of someone who is deeply proud of their work and eager to share it with the world.<\/p>\n<p>            <b><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><\/b><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262495\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <b>You grew up playing cello in the church, right?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            Well, I started learning at an Academy that was formed by several musicians from the Guatemalan Symphony. But yeah, I had a Christian upbringing and I later became part of the church band.<\/p>\n<p>            I would play in the sad, worshipful moments, and I would improvise in a very naive way. It\u2019s a funny thing: When you have people thinking there\u2019s something going on spiritually and it becomes this collective thought, playing music [to them] can be really fulfilling. It taught me more about the power of music on that feeling level. I already felt that playing in the children\u2019s orchestra when I was a kid, but it made a difference that I could play whatever I wanted instead of reading from a score.<\/p>\n<p>            It was a neo-pentecostal church. I never got to speak in tongues, but the cello would [<i>laughs<\/i>]. There were miracle nights where people would get healings and stuff. I never understood how that worked; I always thought they\u2019d paid someone to do it. It was a mystery, even from the inside. <\/p>\n<p>            <b>Watching these miracles unfold from the bandstand, did it ever feel like you had a role in creating them?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            No. I was always skeptical because I understood how much group pressure affects people. I had a lot of doubt when those things h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened \u2014 these big what-the-fuck moments, you know? I just tried to focus on playing the music. I didn\u2019t feel I had any miracle-doing powers. Absolutely not.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262496\" class=\"content_block diptych triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left\">\n<div Beyond your obvious connection to Arthur Russell as an experimental cellist, what inspires you about his music?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            He\u2019s not afraid of being cheesy or making pop songs. He actually loved and wanted to make pop and dance music, and he could still be adventurous with his instrument. <i>World of Echo<\/i> is beautiful to me because it\u2019s super-minimalistic. I really appreciate that approach, and I\u2019d love to make a record like that one day \u2014 just cello, vocals, and another element. He\u2019s always an inspiration, a savior. We call him King Arthur here.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>Other than Arthur Russell and Jacqueline du Pr\u00e9, who else is in your cello top five? Anyone who\u2019s still around?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/okkyung_lee\/?hl=en\">Okkyung Lee<\/a>, the South Korean cellist. And <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lucyrailton\/?hl=en\">Lucy Railton<\/a>, who I just met. From there, you can always find something new.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262499\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <b>You\u2019ve worked with some stellar artists, including Arthur Russell\u2019s longtime collaborator <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/peterzummo\/?hl=en\">Peter Zummo<\/a>. Your most consistent creative partner, though, is H\u00e9ctor. Can you tell me about the development of your relationship with him, and how it changed when you became romantically involved?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            We met in 2021, and we started to play together for the release of my second record. We had an instant creative click. I like his ideas, and if I don\u2019t like them, he justifies them in a way that makes me doubt my opinion \u2014 in a good way, you know? We first had the romantic relationship and then started to collaborate, but it was very fast.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>What are the advantages and disadvantages of working with someone you\u2019re in love with?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            The idea of separating the professional and the romantic is not possible because you will always be thinking about the other person\u2026 I don\u2019t know. We work it out on the way, but sometimes it\u2019s hard to get into work mode. There\u2019s a coldness to work mode, and we have to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> through all the feelings and all the hearts. Was it the first song you wrote for the record, and did you know im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely that it was the opener?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            No. Hector suggested it, and I was like, \u201cReally? Well, OK, why not?\u201d I thought the last one [(\u201cAngel nuevo\u201d)] should be the opener.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>The lyrics of track two, \u201cPantalla Azul,\u201d read like a scathing psychoanalysis. Who did you have in mind when you were writing that?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            I was talking to myself. I don\u2019t normally have any specific person in mind \u2014 just a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> view of someone who doesn\u2019t have a name but is very much a human being with an existential situation going on. I relate to that with my own feelings because I\u2019m human too, right?<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262503\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cWe always talk, Hector and I, about how music is a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> of tension and release, and I thought of the instrumental tracks as tension creators.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262502\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <b>Your cello tone on that song reminds me of some of the \u201980s R&amp;B guitar revivalists everyone\u2019s digging right now \u2014 ML Buch, Mk.gee, and the producer <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/daniel.aged\/?hl=en\">Daniel Aged<\/a>, for instance. Were you listening to anything in that vein while working on the record?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            No, but I had recently gotten a Whammy pedal and was fascinated by it. I fucking love Whammy! I started making the riff, and it sounded so pop; it brought me back to that \u201980s vibe, and the ML Buch vibe.<\/p>\n<p>            I rarely start with a reference track. Hector is more like that, but [when I do it] I become too biased and get stuck in a very narrow direction. I prefer microdosages of inspiration. From there, you can always find something new.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>Would you play an electric cello with a whammy bar on it if it existed?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            Hmm, how would that look?<\/p>\n<p>            <b>You tell me!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            Electric cellos are funny looking, but sometimes these weird instruments become iconic. What\u2019s your relationship with classical cello, now that you\u2019ve done so much else with the instrument?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            I really enjoy it. Actually, I thought it was necessary to have it in this album. I hadn\u2019t done a song with those kinds of arpeggios. In all my records, I use a lot of bowed cello, but not like that. I like this technique: doing a chord with the bow and adding some delay to it, but one delay only, like an echo.<\/p>\n<p>            <b>That song speaks to the paranoid environment you were talking about earlier. The way I understand it, it\u2019s about someone running from their demons, but the metaphor is literalized, like, \u201cThe papers say you\u2019ll be caught if you stop running.\u201d Is that how you see it?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            It\u2019s more of a reference to the FOMO vibes of not being there all the time. Calling the record <i>Feel like you don\u2019t know<\/i> was in that line of trying to catch up with understanding what\u2019s going on in life and in general. I was feeling that all the time when we were making this record. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cO\u00eddos\u201d (\u201cEars\u201d) is about that: Who do you listen to and why? [The line about the papers] is like, \u201cIf you don\u2019t catch up, we\u2019re eventually gonna catch up with you.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262506\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cI never got to speak in tongues, but the cello would.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262507\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <b>The album\u2019s closing track, \u201cAngel nuevo,\u201d could be read as a breakup song, with the repetition of \u201cI won\u2019t go back to you.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            I didn\u2019t think about it like that. The word \u201cangel\u201d in that song used to be \u201cmadre,\u201d and it was a reference to generational repetitions. You think you have a lot to discover, but there\u2019s a lot of repetition in you because of the way you were brought up. I didn\u2019t want my mother to feel related to the song directly because I\u2019m not talking about her specifically, and Hector was like, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you try angel?\u201d It made me think of the Paul Klee painting \u201cAngelus Novus\u201d that Walter Benjamin wrote about \u2014 this angel that\u2019s moving forward but looking back. <\/p>\n<p>            So \u201cno regresar a ti\u201d is about progress, and how it\u2019s impossible to go forward without being attached to the past. It\u2019s about trying to change and feel that you\u2019re in a new place where you know what\u2019s going on, but there are always those limitations of the past. <\/p>\n<p>            <b>You said you originally wanted \u201cAngel nuevo\u201d to be the opener. Did moving it to the end of the record change its meaning for you at all?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>            It became even more meaningful. It made even more sense because it\u2019s all about not going back, and it has this amazing buildup and release.
