By emitting tiny pulses of light, the devices could improve the precision of satellite navigation.<\/p>\n<p>Their accuracy stems from their resistance to the harsh conditions of space. When vicious fog and dust descend upon satellites, traditional sensors are often impeded.<\/p>\n<p>These disruptions can have severe impacts. With a tiny power consumption, they could also keep vehicles flying for longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we aim to explore space much deeper while conducting more complex missions, the need for precise, reliable, and efficient sensors is now more critical than ever,\u201d said <span>Daniele Palaferri, INPHOMIR\u2019s project coordinator.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_EUs_laser_quest\"><\/span>The EU\u2019s laser quest<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>INPHOMIR is currently crafting two <span>laser-based sensors: an optical gyroscope and a novel lidar system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The gyroscope uses spinning beams of light to measure movement and direction. The lidar, meanwhile, emits laser light to produce 3D maps of the environment.<\/p>\n<p><span>According to INPHOMIR, these sensors are poised to \u201ctransform space exploration and autonomous systems.\u201d That potential has caught the EU\u2019s eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu\/funding\/funding-opportunities\/funding-programmes-and-open-calls\/horizon-europe_en\">Horizon Europe<\/a>, the bloc\u2019s key funding programme for research and innovation, has provided funding for the <span>\u20ac5mn project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>INPHOMIR said the cash will boost Europe\u2019s technological sovereignty \u2014 a key target in the EU\u2019s space strategy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For the last year, the bloc has had no independent access to the cosmos.
