He has \u201cvivid memories of the outburst of violence that accompanied the 1956 Hungarian Revolution,\u201d when he was 9. \u201cI saw shopfronts where the glass had been blown away by gun- and tank-fire. Yet nobody thought of helping themselves to the easily accessible goods\u201d inside \u2014 proving \u201cpoverty and oppression do not turn people into looters.\u201d Today, \u201cthe idealization of looting fosters a climate that cultivates people\u2019s worst instincts.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Media_watch_Activists_Distort_Portland_Reporting\"><\/span><strong>Media watch: Activists Distort Portland Reporting<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201c\u200a\u2018YOU\u2019RE NOT ALLOWED TO FILM!\u2019 is a cry you hear incessantly\u201d at Portland protests, \u201cshouted at close range to your face by after-dark demonstrators,\u201d recounts Nancy Rommelmann at Reason. It\u2019s how activists \u201cshape the narrative,\u201d which, \u201cafter many weeks covering street clashes in a city where I lived for 15 years,\u201d is \u201c90 percent bulls\u200a-\u200a-\u200at.\u201d Reporters \u201cnot sufficiently sympathetic to the cause\u201d are \u201cfollowed, harassed\u201d and have their phones stolen. Meanwhile, media recycle footage of a \u201cgroup in league with the activists,\u201d showing \u201cmostly innocent protesters being harassed and beaten by police.\u201d Less \u201cprominently\u201d featured are activists \u201cmenacing and setting fires to police stations and other institutions.\u201d The result: coverage that\u2019s \u201cpredictably distorted and dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Riot_journal_The_Fallout_in_Kenosha\"><\/span><strong>Riot journal: The Fallout in Kenosha<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cLarge swaths\u201d of Kenosha, Wis., \u201care indistinguishable from a war zone,\u201d reports The (London) Times\u2019 Josh Glancy on Twitter. \u201cThe destruction in places is total, the locals dazed, shocked and trying to be brave.\u201d The \u201cbeating heart of the city\u2019s black community\u201d uptown was the \u201cworst hit\u201d after rioting following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, with countless buildings \u2014 \u201cshops, nail salons, faith missions\u201d \u2014 now \u201csmoldering husks.\u201d At a car dealership, \u201cyou could still taste the smoke,\u201d its lot filled with burned-out vehicles. \u201cPretty much every boarded-up shop has a mural or painting on it,\u201d some with \u201cplaintive requests to prospective fire starters: \u2018Kids live upstairs.\u2019\u200a\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Progressive_Xis_Fatal_Urge_To_Purge\"><\/span><strong>Progressive: Xi\u2019s Fatal Urge To Purge<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cHistory, especially Chinese history, is full of examples of omnipotent rulers whose unchecked behavior led to disaster,\u201d writes Simon Tisdale at The Guardian, and \u201ccomrade-emperor\u201d Xi Jinping \u201cis a modern-day case in point.\u201d His \u201cauthoritarian, expansionist policies\u201d have landed \u201cChina in a ring of fire,\u201d all its \u201cborderlands ablaze with conflict and confrontation.\u201d Even with the pandemic further sinking Beijing\u2019s global reputation, Xi is \u201cdoubling down\u201d on \u201cindefinite one-man rule and ideological conformity\u201d \u2014 with rumored plans to \u201cdeclare himself \u2018Chairman Xi.\u2019\u200a\u201d Last week, he ordered renewed crackdowns in Tibet \u2014 where past \u201ccrimes against humanity\u201d were the template for current oppression in Xinjiang. Facing unrest from Mongolia to Hong Kong, Xi nonetheless is \u201csteadily increasing military pressure on\u201d Taiwan. Yet \u201cthere\u2019s nobody to stop him, nobody to say \u2018no.\u2019\u200a\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"From_the_left_%E2%80%98Confirmed_My_Behind\"><\/span><strong>From the left: \u2018Confirmed,\u2019 My Behind<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Remember when CNN and MSNBC breathlessly reported Donald Trump Jr. had advance access to a WikiLeaks tranche of Democratic Party emails \u2014 only to have the story fall apart spectacularly? The episode, charges The Intercept\u2019s Glenn Greenwald, is a striking example of a \u201chighly corrosive tactic\u201d: the claim of supposed \u201cindependent confirmation\u201d when a story is anything but confirmed. That same technique is \u201cdriving the supremely dumb but all-consuming <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> cycle centered on whether President Trump, as first reported by The Atlantic\u2019s editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, made disparaging comments about The Troops.\u201d AP and Fox News claim to have \u201c\u200a\u2018confirmed\u2019 the Atlantic story.
