\n Late night shows returned following a hiatus on Monday night, giving hosts Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon their first chances to react to last month\u2019s presidential debate. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cSo should he stay, should he go? Who am I to recommend,\u201d Colbert said on the Late Show<\/em>. \u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s going on in Joe Biden\u2018s mind. Something I app<\/a>arently have in common with Joe Biden.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Fallout from Biden and Trump\u2019s debate was swift, with many criticizing the president\u2019s faltering performance and some calling for him to step down from seeking reelection. Colbert\u2019s show satirized the situation with a prerecorded sketch, \u201cPlay Mystery Candidate Today,\u201d a spoofed vintage game<\/a> show for choosing a new president. <\/p>\n

\n In his monologue, Colbert addressed claims that Biden\u2019s bad performance was the result of a cold. \u201cOh, I hate those summer colds where your voice gets hoarse and your brain explodes,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\n In response to reports that the president would stop doing events after 8 p.m., Colbert said, \u201cSo the state dinners are all going to be early bird specials? Also, which 8 p.m., sir? East Coast, West Coast, Moscow? The world does not stop at 8 p.m. Is Kamala Harris going to have to clock in as night president?\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Despite the jokes, Colbert remained clear: \u201cIt\u2019s a shame because Joe Biden is a great president,\u201d he said. Yet, the comedia<\/a>n also told the audience he wasn\u2019t sure what should come next. \u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s the right thing to do here,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I think that this is actually a battle of two virtues. One of them is perseverance. Biden is famous for that\u2026[the other] is self-sacrifice. And self-sacrifice takes a particular kind of courage, and that is a courage I believe Joe Biden is capable of. I believe he\u2019s a good enough man. He is a good enough president to put the needs of the country ahead of the needs of his ego, and however painful that might be, it is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Over on Late Night<\/em>, Meyers opened his \u201cA Closer Look\u201d monologue with joking na\u00efvet\u00e9 regarding the political landscape, telling the crowd, \u201cI just got back from a rejuvenating two-week vacation. I completely unplugged from the news<\/a>. I\u2019m feeling refreshed and energized and ready to dive back in. What did I miss?\u201d <\/p>\n

\n He went on to take jabs at Biden\u2019s debate performance, while still emphasizing Trump\u2019s spreading of misinformation. <\/p>\n

\n \u201cA wildly dangerous criminal and pathological liar is leading a radical movement to dismantle American democracy, and he\u2019s within striking distance of the presidency,\u201d he said. \u201cThe stakes of this election could not be any higher, which is why it would be nice to have a Democratic candidate who could competently articulate those stakes to the American people, instead of whatever the hell this was.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Colbert Meyers also addressed Biden\u2019s post-debate interview with ABC News\u2019 George Stephanopoulos, when the president said, \u201cIf Trump wins in November, I\u2019ll feel as long as I gave it my all and did the job I know I could do, that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n \u201cNo!\u201d Meyers said in response. \u201cThat\u2019s not what this is about. Giving it your all is what salsa lessons at a retirement home is all about. This isn\u2019t about how you feel. This is about how voters feel.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Colbert had a similar response. \u201cActually, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s what this is about. I think that\u2019s what The Karate Kid <\/em>was about. This is about democracy and nuclear war, and you know \u2014 that stuff.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n On the Tonight Show<\/em>, Fallon also addressed the debate\u2019s fallout on Monday, comparing the president\u2019s performance to a firework \u201cthat doesn\u2019t ignite, or the one where the bottle tips over and blows up your house.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n He added that Democrats\u2019 plan to remove Biden from the race will eventually become to \u201ctie a bunch of balloons to the White House and hope he floats away like that old guy from Up<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
