After a troubled development and four years of delays, Ariane 6 looked like a prime candidate to join the list.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The launcher was commissioned to create a European pathway\u00a0into the cosmos. Registration now!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, the setback was only minor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ariane 6 successfully blasted off and deployed research satellites in orbit. The problem arose late in the flight, when the rocket\u2019s final components failed to de-orbit. Nonetheless, the mission was declared a success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis was a historic moment,\u201d said Luc\u00eda Linares, the European Space Agency\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0(ESA) head of space transportation strategy. \u201cIt\u2019s good for Europe. It\u2019s also good for the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ariane 6 is now set for a first commercial launch in December. A further six are scheduled for next year and another eight in 2026. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St\u00e9phane Isra\u00ebl, the CEO of Arianespace, which operates the rocket, said the glitch would have \u201cno consequences on the next launches.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His words brought welcome relief to European spacetech. The sector has big opportunities, but desperately requires new launch infrastructure.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_need_for_Ariane_6\"><\/span>The need for Ariane 6<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Boggett, the CEO of investment firm <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/seraphim.vc\/\">Seraphim Space<\/a>, awaited the launch with bated breath. He believes Ariane 6 can provide a big boost to spacetech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe increased access will no doubt accelerate the pace of innovation and deployment of new space technologies in Europe,\u201d he tells TNW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boggett has big ambitions. Through his company\u2019s investments, he hopes to turn European startups into global sector leaders. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That plan had been stalled by Ariane 6\u2019s lengthy delays. While they waited, companies relied on launch services in other regions \u2014 particularly the SpaceX service in the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rocket can now remove that bottleneck. Ariane 6 can also reduce the costs and wait times for startups planning to deploy payloads. So long, of course, as the service<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> proves dependable and affordable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its first commercial launches can\u2019t come soon enough. A new space race is underway, and Europe is at risk of falling behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hopes_and_fears_for_European_spacetech\"><\/span>Hopes and fears for European spacetech<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cosmos are becoming fertile land for business growth. <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/aerospace-and-defense\/our-insights\/space-the-1-point-8-trillion-dollar-opportunity-for-global-economic-growth\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey and the World Economic Forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expect the global space economy to rise from $630 billion in value last year to $1.8 trillion by 2035. \u201cNew space is a multi-decade growth market,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boggett says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe\u2019s launcher crisis has obstructed access to that market. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, the continent completed only three successful orbital launches \u2014 its lowest total since 2004. The US, meanwhile, had 109 \u2014 the most a single country has ever made.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe US dominates commercial space launches, driven by private companies like SpaceX, which has revolutionised the industry with reusable rockets, significantly lowering costs and increasing launch frequency,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarkko Antila, the CEO of Finnish satellite startup <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/kuvaspace.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kuva Space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tells TNW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the US leads the market, Chinese rockets are also enjoying growing success. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, the country completed 66 launches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">China has also emerged as a lucrative location for spacetech funding. According to new research from Seraphim, the country leads the world in private investment this year. Its total of $1.7bn edges the US figure of $1.6bn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Last quarter, Chinese companies attracted the world\u2019s two largest rounds. The biggest went to launch business Space Pioneer, which raised $208mn. Minospace, a satellite manufacturer, came second with $138mn.<\/p>\n<p>In Europe, funding hasn\u2019t grown at the same pace. In 2021, the continent\u2019s investment dwarfed the whole of Asia. But those positions have now reversed.<\/p>\n<p>Asia has also rapidly cut Europe\u2019s edge on number of spacetech deals. In the last quarter of this year, the continent inked 150, while Asia signed 149.<\/p>\n<p>Startups hope <span>Ariane<\/span> 6 sparks a new boom in European investment. Recent trends suggest that their wishes will come true.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Preparing_for_take-off\"><\/span>Preparing for take-off<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boggett<\/span> expects Ariane 6 to stimulate Europe\u2019s space economy. \u201cProximity to launch facilities allows for more integrated testing and iteration of new technologies,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>European companies can also reduce their transportation and logistical expenses. Additionally, the launch capability can strengthen collaboration between launch providers, satellite startups, and research institutions.<\/p>\n<p>With the wider funding landscape recovering, startups are poised to take advantage of the opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Spacetech has just enjoyed four continuous quarters of investment recovery, according to new data from Seraphim. A cool $2.4bn was invested in the last quarter and deal volume reached all-time highs.<\/p>\n<p>Europe\u2019s biggest investments were a $100mn raise for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aaltohaps.com\/\">Aalto<\/a>, British spacecraft builder, and a $93mn round for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iceye.com\/\">ICEYE<\/a>, <span>a Finnish microsatellite manufacturer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A growing group of VC firms are adding to the cash pool. Among them is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/alpinespace.vc\/\">Alpine Space Ventures<\/a>, which plans big investments in Europe. Just today, the firm closed new fund of \u20ac170mn ($185mn).<\/p>\n<p>Public investment is also rising. ESA\u2019s budget for 2024 has grown to a record \u20ac7.79bn ($8.49bn) \u2014 10% more than last year.<\/p>\n<p>But any hopes of Ariane 6 outshining US launch giants appear misplaced. Antila of Kuva Space warns that the expendable system can\u2019t compete with SpaceX\u2019s reusable rockets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the European Space Agency and Arianespace have developed the Ariane 6 for cost-effective launches, it lacks full reusability and is primarily limited to using the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the rocket could reignite European spacetech. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boggett<\/span> is confident that the vehicle will have a big impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve no doubt that having a local launch capability will further encourage innovation and drive the pace of development within Europe\u2019s space sector,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>The first commercial flights will provide a glimpse of the potential.
