This was confirmed in a new interview with The Atlantic\u2019s CEO Nicholas Thompson.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The quote.<\/strong> ChatGPT search could become \u201can important way that people navigate the internet,\u201d so it would be \u201cbetter for us to be in it than to not be in it, and also to help shape it than not help shape it,\u201d Thompson told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/7\/11\/24196396\/the-atlantic-openai-licensing-deal-ai-news-journalism-web-future-decoder-podcasts\">The Verge<\/a>. He also said:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThey have said that they\u2019re going to build a search product. They have not launched the search product, but they have said they would build it. We have allowed them to include The Atlantic in their search product.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has made clear he wants to disrupt the search paradigm via a new search product that combines web search plus large language models (LLMs). ChatGPT already offers an impressive \u201cbrowse mode\u201d to search the web that got really good following the arrival of GPT-4o. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Google challenger?<\/strong> ChatGPT \u201csearch\u201d remains quite limited for several query types. However, ChatGPT set a new traffic record in June, attracting 2.9 billion visits, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.similarweb.com\/blog\/insights\/ai-news\/chatgpt-beats-summer-slump\/\">Similarweb<\/a>. This was a 96% increase, year-over-year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Strategic partnerships.<\/strong> If The Atlantic has given OpenAI permission to be included in the ChatGPT search product, I\u2019d bet good money that many of OpenAI\u2019s other partners are doing the same. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While this is good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> for those large publishers, it could mean that smaller publishers will struggle to earn prominent citations on OpenAI\u2019s search product.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>AI search future.<\/strong> Thompson had some interesting things to say about where he sees AI search going. He shared his thoughts on whether OpenAI search could become a reliable traffic referrer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThat\u2019s the bet. There are a lot of people out there who are like, \u2018Well, OpenAI\u2019s search doesn\u2019t work.\u2019 It\u2019s like, \u2018Yeah, AI search doesn\u2019t work right now. It doesn\u2019t work very well. AI is good for a lot of things. It\u2019s not good for search.\u2019 That means that Google search traffic is not going to go away for a while. Once AI is good at search, that\u2019s when Google regular Ten Blue Link search traffic goes away. \u2026 I do think that AI search will start to work.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOver time, the AI companies will put many engineers on this problem, and they will, I think, figure out how to solve search. So when that h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens, it\u2019ll be a partial replacement for Google\u2026 Do I think that three years from now we will have as much search traffic from Perplexity, OpenAI, all of their competitors as we do right now from Google? Absolutely not. But will we have some? I sure hope so.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Dig deeper.
