But where March\u2019s <i>Chemtrails<\/i> leaned acoustic and traditional, a niche within the niche of Lana&#8217;s sound, October\u2019s <i>Banisters<\/i> refracted the wider expanse of Del Rey&#8217;s agglomerated Americana into something more amorphous: here, a burst of Ennio Morricone turned trap, there, outtakes from 2014&#8217;s psych rock foray <i>Ultraviolence<\/i>. The country-trap ballad sits closer to Lana\u2019s jazz and hip-hop-propelled solo work than &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AcVQJJoD45w\">Summer Bummer<\/a>,&#8221; hewing closer to the multigenre synthesis of 2023&#8217;s <i>Did You Know That There&#8217;s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd<\/i> or even the trip-hop pulse of 2012&#8217;s <i>Born to Die<\/i> and 2016&#8217;s <i>Honeymoon<\/i>. But &#8220;Tough&#8221; forgoes the confessional mode of <i>Tunnel<\/i>, instead thrumming with a steely resolve that feels lived-in rather than put on. Del Rey sets the scene, and then \u2014 the drums kick in for Quavo\u2019s tight melodic verse. He mirrors the solitude that permeates Lana Del Rey&#8217;s discography, stretching elastically to punctuate his bars: \u201cStill shinin\u2019 and that\u2019s <i>hard<\/i> \/ If you ever lost someone that you love.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            Casual onlookers best acquainted with &#8220;Bad N Boujee&#8221; or &#8220;Stir Fry&#8221; may find Quavo&#8217;s emotional depth here a pleasant surprise, though he&#8217;s always shown us glimpses of the man behind the Versace shades. His turn on \u201cTough\u201d vaguely recalls his philandering appearance on Young Thug\u2019s romantic \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=j_6xD69LCPE\">You Said<\/a>;\u201d 2013\u2019s &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vt1b199_waE\">Thank You God<\/a>&#8221; found Quavo outlining the struggle of being raised by a single parent, while 2017&#8217;s &#8220;<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zp4Z4-IZ84A\">Out Yo Way<\/a>&#8221; could almost read like a male counterpart to Lana Del Rey&#8217;s breakout &#8220;Video<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s&#8221; if she was bringing her man a double cup.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262604\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Quavo has been seeing angel numbers \u201call the time\u201d since Takeoff passed. \u201cHe communicate with me like that.\u201d the rapper <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6e8oSL9axoE\">said last July<\/a>, nine months after his nephew was shot and killed in Houston. Angel numbers are strings of repeated digits (444, 222, 333, etcetera) that some see as messages from a higher power or the deceased. 1111 symbolizes divine guidance, a signal that you\u2019re on the path to your destiny and your guardian angels are close at hand. Quavo toys with this idea on \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DbjDJLcNvdU\">11.11<\/a>,\u201d recorded the same date as Takeoff\u2019s 2022 memorial: \u201cI never ask God why, I just go where the road designed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            This tilt towards the morbid and metaphysical was scrawled all over his August album <i>Rocket Power<\/i>, which highlighted the tiny fissures in Quavo\u2019s stoic facade like so much gold lacquer. Where 2018\u2019s <i>QUAVO HUNCHO<\/i> found Quavo fully inhabiting the role of the trapstar-turned-popstar, he\u2019s since inverted that idea, nostalgic for days at the bando, less interested in the spoils of celebrity. You can trace a similar line through Del Rey\u2019s albums as she\u2019s turned her cinematic lens inward, carefully unweaving the threads of her life.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262608\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lana Del Rey - Summer Bummer (Official Audio) ft. In that sense, \u201cTough\u201d is a photonegative of music by Lil Peep or Jelly Roll, even if Quavo and Lana prefer to dispense remixed comparisons: life is like \u201ccrawlin\u2019 in the mud,\u201d as hard as \u201cnickel-wound strings on your good ol\u2019 Gibson guitar.\u201d Back in May, Lana said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/lana-del-rey-interview-lasso-ivor-novellos-country-reading-leeds-3759161\">her forthcoming album <i>Lasso<\/i><\/a> was \u201cmore melodic\u201d and less \u201cself-revealing\u201d than her last three albums (<i>Chemtrails<\/i>, <i>Banisters<\/i>, and <i>Tunnel<\/i>). Particularly on the latter two, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f5K5E_ZTBjk\">sudden interjections<\/a> of trap drums <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hNFoCOKk7LE\">jut out abruptly<\/a>, Del Rey and her collaborators treating albums as sonic collage. Easygoing and approachable, \u201cTough\u201d instead recalls the glossier hybridization of Tumblr apocrypha \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dTv31U5xEc4\">Ridin<\/a>\u2019\u201d wearing Stetsons rather than <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/2020\/08\/the-incredibly-polarizing-lita-shoe.html\">Litas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cTough\u201d rejects fame by ignoring it altogether (musically), zooming in on red dirt and blue collars. \u201cLife\u2019s gonna do what it does \/ Sure as the good lord\u2019s up above,\u201d Lana sighs on the chorus, embodying a sort of everyman hardship. Aiming for universality rather than autobiography can lead to generic songs; here, it just feels simple, like when Quavo shrugs, \u201cIt was kinda hard for me\u201d as if every pertinent detail can be found in his voice. Stitching country tropes to booming 808s isn\u2019t a new trick, but unlike Moneybagg Yo feat. Morgan Wallen or \u201cOld Town Road,\u201d this song aims for intimacy.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262606\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            It\u2019s as if the spotlights never turned on at all, or perhaps Lana and Quavo are totally blind to the glare of TMZ flashbulbs spurred by rumors of a relationship. This is, of course, a little studied, a little put on \u2014 dating allegations as promo have been old hat forever, and the pair\u2019s Instagram teasers have cheerfully leveraged our voyeuristic impulses \u2014 but the artifice is mercifully limited to the marketing.<\/p>\n<p>            Besides, rap and country have always been reflexive, metatextual genres \u2014 this is show <i>business<\/i>, after all. Shrinking the widescreen romance of <i>Lust For Life<\/i> down to the size of an iPhone, \u201cTough\u201d entices the audience closer.
