\n Following the news<\/a> that Shannen Doherty died on Saturday after a nine-year cancer battle at age 53, her Beverly Hills, 90210 <\/em>co-stars are paying tribute to their late friend on social media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n The 1988 cult classic Heathers<\/em> gave Doherty her first major role. But it was 90210 <\/em>that turned her into a star. She was cast on Aaron Spelling\u2019s teen drama in 1990 as Brenda Walsh and remained on the show until 1994.<\/p>\n

\n While friction with her castmates amid her divorce from Ashley Hamilton is partially what caused her exit from the series<\/a>, her former co-stars detailed their decades-long friendship with Doherty following her passing, shedding light into their dynamic with the actress during her final years.<\/p>\n

\n Jennie Garth described her late friend as \u201cone of the strongest people I have ever known.\u201d She also detailed how strong their bond was despite the fan and media-created rivalry between them during the show. \u201cWe were so often pitted against each other but none of that reflected the truth of our real relationship which was one built on mutual respect and admiration. She was courageous, passionate, determined and very loving and generous,\u201d explained Garth. \u201cI will miss her and will always honor her deeply in my heart and in my memories. My heart breaks for her family and Bowie and all the people who loved her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Jason Priestley, who played Doherty\u2019s twin brother Brandon, shared a photo of himself and his late co-star from set on Instagram and captioned it, \u201cShocked and saddened to hear about the passing of my friend Shannen. She was a force of nature and I will miss her. Sending love and light to her family in this dark time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Brian Austin Green also paid tribute to Doherty with an Instagram post. \u201cShan. My sister\u2026You loved me through everything. You were a big part of my understanding of love. I\u2019ll miss you more than I know how to process right now. Thank you for the gift of you.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n Tori Spelling shared a photo of herself with Doherty on her Instagram Story, captioned, \u201cI don\u2019t have outward words yet\u2026but WE knew and that\u2019s what matters,\u201d alongside broken heart emojis.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cSo young \u2013 so sad. May you RIP Shannen. I know Luke is there with open arms to love you,\u201d wrote Gabrielle Carteris in an Instagram post.<\/p>\n

\n Meanwhile, Carol Potter, who played her onscreen mom, also took to Instagram, writing, \u201cShocked and saddened by news of Shannon Doherty\u2019s death. What a journey she has been on! Gone too soon. Throughout, she stayed true to herself and gave us an example of courage and perseverance in facing her own death. May she rest in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n After 90210<\/em> star Luke Perry\u2019s untimely death in 2019, the remaining main cast had reunited \u2014 decades after their hit \u201990s series \u2014 to reprise their iconic roles for a Fox revival series, BH90210<\/em>, that aired that following summer. \n Doherty had said she didn\u2019t originally plan to star in the reboot, but changed her mind after Perry died. \u201cIt was nothing against the show, I just didn\u2019t want to go back there,\u201d she said at the time. \u201cLuke passed away and it came back around to me and I just felt like, \u2018Wow, we created so much together on\u00a090210<\/em>, our characters and our relationships, that love between the two of us,\u2019 that it felt like the right thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Joe E. Tata, who portrayed the endearing Peach Pit diner owner Nat Bussichio on all 10 seasons of the original\u00a0Beverly Hills,\u00a090210<\/em>, also passed away in 2022.<\/p>\n

\n Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015. After treatment and several surgeries, she announced in April 2017 that she was in remission. In February 2020, she tearfully\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0Good Morning America<\/em>, \u201cI\u2019m stage 4 \u2014 my cancer came back.\u201d She then\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0in June 2023 the cancer had spread to her brain.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,\u201d publicist Leslie Sloane said in a statement to\u00a0People<\/em><\/a> over the weekend. \u201cThe devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
