Both feared and revered in pre-colonial Uganda, these demi-gods would <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20240108161359\/http:\/\/america.aljazeera.com\/opinions\/2014\/4\/homosexuality-africamuseveniugandanigeriaethiopia.html\">commune<\/a> with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=j_hQAwAAQBAJ&amp;pg=PA37&amp;lpg=PA37&amp;dq=lake+victoria+uganda+spirituality+bisexual&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=ccjmgD_jcj&amp;sig=ACfU3U31CtMaUSitUunpWegezL1uBJrWIg&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjgycy_6-CGAxWMJEQIHfEzBXY4ChDoAXoECAIQAw#v=onepage&amp;q=lake%20victoria%20uganda%20spirituality%20bisexual&amp;f=false\">trans and pangender shamans<\/a>, who are said to embody the divine masculine and feminine energies of the lake. Even now, there are many \u201coccultic beliefs\u201d about Lake Victoria, according to DJ and producer Authentically Plastic, who once visited the lake with ANTI-MASS co-founder Nsasi. There, they dropped acid and heard the gods while swimming to an island in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cThe waves got really intense and crazy, and I started experiencing these auditory hallucinations of a very specific drum pattern,\u201d Authentically Plastic recalls. They place heavy emphasis on how both members of the queer Ugandan music collective barely \u201csurvived with our lives,\u201d before realizing they\u2019d heard \u201cthe same exact rhythm\u201d while fighting against the chaos and confusion of the current.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262727\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262643\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            They\u2019d later reproduce the divine rhythm on their track \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/anti-mass.bandcamp.com\/track\/galiba\">Galiba<\/a>,\u201d a disorienting whirlpool of pitch-black circular sound, overwhelmed by the ceaseless intensity of a \u201critualistic\u201d <i><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1GzTO5pMuLg\">kadodi<\/a><\/i> drum. \u201cGaliba\u201d is intimidating and inescapable, the militant bassline at complete odds with its disorienting rip current of dizzying GHE20G0TH1K-style loops. A deconstructed club track steeped in hurried panic and frenzied confusion, it\u2019s fair to call it a sonic incarnation of the looming danger awaiting Authentically Plastic, Nsasi, <br \/>Turkana, and  Gerald every time they stepped outside. It had to be the opening track of the collective\u2019s 2021 debut compilation, <i><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/anti-mass.bandcamp.com\/album\/doxa\">DOXA<\/a><\/i>.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262645\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1241782241\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=3628634061\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/anti-mass.bandcamp.com\/album\/doxa\">DOXA by Authentically Plastic &amp; Nsasi<\/a><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262644\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            Despite traditional beliefs placing queer Ugandans in high positions of spiritual power, the community currently faces the ever-present threat of harassment, physical assault, and arrests under <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/ugandas-constitutional-court-upholds-anti-homosexuality-law-2024-04-03\/\">one of the most draconian anti-LGBTQIA+ laws in the world<\/a>. In May 2023, the Ugandan government enacted the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.go.ug\/sites\/default\/files\/The%20Anti-Homosexuality%20Act%2C%202023.pdf\">Anti-Homosexuality Act<\/a> (AHA) as part of an ongoing string of homophobic and transphobic legislation, incarcerating any Ugandans suspected of engaging in same-sex relations or non-traditional gender expression. Tattling can boil down to neighborhood politics, work rivalries, and interpersonal relationships, with \u201cpeople being fired from their jobs and landlords still kicking people out of their homes.\u201d It can even be weaponized for something as petty as clout, according to Nsasi, who mentions an \u201cex-gay\u201d influencer named Elisha Mukisa, who <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opendemocracy.net\/en\/5050\/elisha-mukisa-ex-gay-uganda-movement-anti-homosexuality-act-prison\/\">allegedly sneaks into LGBTQI+ parties<\/a> around the capital city of Kampala intending to out others.<\/p>\n<p>            But Dr. Ian Lekus of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/globalequality.org\/\">Council for Global Equity<\/a> tells <i>The FADER<\/i> that the AHA is effectively a smokescreen to hide much larger problems. You have poor health care. You have poor this, poor that,\u201d they say. \u201cThere are so many [more important] things to pay attention to than the sexual practice of one man sleeping with another man, a woman sleeping with another woman, or whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            For the last decade, Kampala\u2019s underground club scene has been considered <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2023\/mar\/29\/ugandan-musicians-fear-anti-gay-law\">a safe haven<\/a> for members of the East and Central African LGBTQIA+ community, with many using the \u201cartistic creativity\u201d of nightlife to keep them safe. But the collective\u2019s tendency toward abrasive noise and metallic sounds can be a way of helping people understand their experience while also allowing others with the same experience to feel heard. Rip it apart entirely around sound music, performance art, and the experience,\u201d Gerald explains with a mischievous smile. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cA brave space,\u201d they say, while acknowledging the power of its dual meaning. It\u2019s similar to the way Nsasi describing their parties as \u201csafe spaces to think,\u201d with attendees able to express themselves in ways they\u2019d never be able to outside, whether they\u2019re drag queens or the hijabis who apparently told them that \u201c\u2018this is the only place I feel happy to show my hair.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            They sigh, \u201cIt was like, \u2018Okay, this was very much needed.\u2019 People can be free here.\u201d <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262651\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            This freedom, they say, also extended to ANTI-MASS\u2019s incorporation of non-musical elements into their performances. Inspired by other left-field electronic musicians, they began to branch out into other forms of expression, including live performance and visual art. But even before the AHA was made into law, Nsasi recalls the police showing up to the collective\u2019s New Year\u2019s Eve party in the early hours of the morning, likely at the behest of a \u201crepressed\u201d neighbor, they joke.<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI remember we reasoned with them that the whole world is celebrating right now. We had to play the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> while not knowing what to expect,\u201d they remember. Most times the answer used to be \u201cgive me money, give me money, give me money.\u201d Now though, Nsasi says, it\u2019s a lot more precarious, especially when you\u2019re already made it onto a government watchlist.<\/p>\n<p>            In the wake of the AHA\u2019s passage, Nsasi explains that it didn\u2019t take long for ANTI-MASS to become a big surveillance target thanks to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mixmag.net\/feature\/anti-mass-queer-collective-interview-authentically-plastic-turkana-nsasi-doxa-uganda-kampala\">the producers\u2019 rising international profile<\/a> and the growing popularity of their parties. Their delivery is shockingly matter-of-fact.<\/p>\n<p>            Gerald lets out a dry chuckle, \u201cYes, we are queens on the run.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            This means Nsasi now lives in London, Turkana is working in Berlin, Authentically Plastic is completing a residency in Vienna, and Gerald is studying art in Munich. Their entire friend group is separated and kept apart by visa restrictions that make it almost impossible to see each other. But with no signs of the AHA going anywhere, Authentically Plastic says they\u2019re turning their attention towards rebuilding everything from scratch and \u201cfiguring out a way to find a community now in Europe.\u201d <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262653\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            While they may no longer have to keep looking over their shoulders, there\u2019s an underlying anxiety to every ANTI-MASS track. They\u2019re dark and propulsive productions, containing a dynamism that\u2019s meant to be danced to, though they\u2019ll never let you forget that this intensity is a byproduct of necessity. Between blasts of industrial techno and the incessant barrage of grenade-like beats, their caginess and heavy use of harsh glitching and spiky textures simultaneously act as a means of secretive self-protection and openly brazen protest, forced to play both offense and defense within a brutal dystopian nightmare. It\u2019s music that\u2019s about \u201cencapsulating the raw energy and defiance inherent in challenging oppressive systems and the status quo,\u201d Turkana explains, adding that the \u201csonic aggression serves as a cathartic outlet, mirroring the tumultuous and often confrontational nature of these struggles.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            That said, one of their biggest conflicts is also internal. Despite ANTI-MASS being fortunate to obtain European artist visas in the first place, as many other members of the LGBTQIA+ community have had to figure out alternative living arrangements, whether that be living in their cars or hiding inside <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/gay-targeted-uganda-inside-extreme-crackdown-lgbtq-rights\/story?id=103696195\">a secret shelter<\/a>. Gerald says the last they heard one was going to Zambia, while the other was still waiting to cross into a neighboring country like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/lgbtq-ugandans-flee-homeland-over-harsh-anti-gay-law\/video-69117993\">Kenya<\/a> or Tanzania, where being queer is still criminalized, but carries a much lesser sentence. <\/p>\n<p>            Anywhere, however, is better than openly living in Uganda, where the government\u2019s legitimization of anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric has led to an increasing number of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/peoplesdispatch.org\/2023\/06\/05\/lgbtq-ugandans-face-deadly-threat-as-anti-homosexuality-act-signed-into-law\/\">vicious attacks<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-news\/uganda-gay-activist-blames-knife-attack-worsening-climate-intolerance-rcna132336\">murder attempts<\/a>, and other horrific hate crimes. Even presenting as anything but extremely straight can put you in danger, Nsasi says, explaining he\u2019s been \u201cstopped and directly questioned about my nose ring\u201d and that even his plaited locs can be a problem, as they can be seen as \u201ctoo feminine.\u201d And as Authentically Plastic knows firsthand, the police are just as eager to stop anyone they deem a \u201csuspect,\u201d whether it\u2019s to arrest or extort them. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262666\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2118567301\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=3127902083\/transparent=true\/\" seamless><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hakunakulala.bandcamp.com\/album\/coinage\">Coinage by Nsasi<\/a><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262655\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            It\u2019s an ever-present threat, and one that\u2019s routinely brought to their attention when \u201cpeople in the community back home will reach out for help,\u201d Nsasi says, which is hard to see when they know they can\u2019t do anything physically or financially. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cSometimes, it&#8217;s just [impossible] to help. It\u2019s not like I didn&#8217;t want to, because I don&#8217;t want to be useless,\u201d they say. There\u2019s a hint of defeat in their voice as they say, \u201cSo I&#8217;m out here to try and be useful by showing up for my community.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cThere are all of these people in the community back home, so I wonder like, \u2018Okay, did this make any sense? Is everyone okay? That comes a little as regret, but it&#8217;s a work in progress,\u201d Nsasi says. They\u2019ve also tried to help with emergency fundraisers and other grassroots initiatives.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262667\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Suzi Analogue, Turkana - Make It Shake [Official Video] ft. Even if they\u2019re just talking about \u201chow we feel about their identity,\u201d attracting media attention is their way of helping their friends back home be heard. It\u2019s as simple as talking about \u201cbeing queer and in exile, but without solution,\u201d they explain, adding that ANTI-MASS\u2019 next opportunity to use their platform will be at Amsterdam\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ra.co\/events\/1943855\">Garage Festival<\/a> in late July. <\/p>\n<p>            But that can also be exhausting, especially when they\u2019re \u201cdepressed\u201d and \u201ccouch surfing,\u201d while also missing Uganda and the support systems they had there.<\/p>\n<p>            There\u2019s a touch of sadness in their voice. I ask whether, despite the righteousness of bringing attention to the situation in Uganda, Nsasi or the other members of ANTI-MASS ever regret bringing attention to themselves as queer artists by doing press or continuing to throw parties. Nsasi needs to think about it for a moment.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262657\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            \u201cI do not regret my work being relevant, because that&#8217;s why we dream,\u201d they say. \u201cYou want your work to go places. You want to be known. You want to be discovered.
