A millennium-old book of short stories may be a deep cut even for our reboot-crazed culture, but there\u2019s a certain logic to bringing \u201cThe Decameron\u201d back in the aftermath of another society-spanning disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    \u201cThe Decameron,\u201d the eight-episode limited <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> created by Kathleen Jordan (\u201cTeenage Bounty Hunters\u201d) for Netflix, was \u2014 by its own press materials\u2019 admission \u2014\u00a0\u201cvery loosely inspired\u201d by \u201cThe Decameron\u201d as published in the 1300s. Gone is the storytelling structure, with each guest spinning tales to pass the time, \u00e1 la \u201cThe Canterbury Tales\u201d or \u201cOne Thousand and One Nights.\u201d Jordan\u2019s version focuses entirely on the Florentine aristocrats and long-suffering servants cooped up in a villa, each with their own ulterior motives. In that sense, it recalls \u201cThe White Lotus,\u201d the current high water mark for confinement-inspired art (COVID edition).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    While \u201cThe Decameron\u201d may not reach the heights of Mike White\u2019s contingency plan turned HBO crown jewel, the series is a tartly funny showcase for a uniformly excellent ensemble. (Executive producer Jenji Kohan, of \u201cOrange Is the New Black,\u201d knows a thing or two about sprawling casts funneled into a single location.) As the days tick by and desperation mounts, the forced politeness of strangers forced to share space and potentially toxic air gives way to mounting chaos. Fortunately, we\u2019re far enough removed from lockdown to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>reciate the setup as a vessel for black comedy, not just a reminder of what we\u2019d rather forget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    The roster of \u201cThe Decameron\u201d runs the gamut from established comic veterans to potential breakouts. Between \u201cArrested Development\u201d and \u201cVeep,\u201d Tony Hale has the resum\u00e9 to serve as master of ceremonies. His Sirisco is the villa\u2019s steward, and in the mysterious absence of his employer, it\u2019s his job to put the newcomers at ease, despite the raging pestilence outside. These outsiders include Pampinea (Zosia Mamet), a self-perceived old maid at 28 who\u2019s eager to meet her betrothed, the mansion\u2019s missing owner, and her maid Misia (Saoirse-Monica Jackson, of \u201cDerry Girls\u201d), who endures indignities like fetching Pampinea\u2019s \u201cmorning cheese.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Before long, Pampinea decides to simply forgo the groom altogether and fake a status-securing marriage. She\u2019s far from the only imposter in attendance. Unlike the obedient Misia, the servant Licisca (Tanya Reynolds of \u201cSex Education\u201d) takes matters into her own hands, shoving her bratty boss Filomena (Jessica Plummer) off a bridge and assuming her identity. Panfilo (Karan Gill) is authentically of the upper crust, but his family has fallen from grace. His ultra-pious wife Niefile (Lou Gala) has also sworn herself to celibacy, though Panfilo has private reasons not to mind. Finally, quack doctor Dioneo (Amar Chadha-Patel) has his hypochondriac patient Tindaro (Douggie McMeekin) in the palm of his hand \u2014 which doesn\u2019t mean he\u2019s helping Tindaro feel better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Rivalries, reversals and flirtations soon start to unfold, many of them across class lines. Mamet is glass-shatteringly shrill as the insecure, off-putting Pampinea, while McMeekin has a Corden-esque knack for playing the bumbling fool. At least some of those sheltering in place earn our sympathy: both Reynolds\u2019 Licisca and Sirisco\u2019s deputy Stratilia (Leila Farzad) claw back some agency while speaking truth to power. \u201cCurrently, you\u2019re taking up all the fear,\u201d Licisca tells a panicking Filomena. \u201cThere\u2019s none left for me.\u201d It\u2019s a succinct take on emotional labor in a sea of ribald jokes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Alongside \u201cThe Great,\u201d \u201cBridgerton,\u201d the recent \u201cLady Jane\u201d and others, \u201cThe Decameron\u201d belongs to the shockingly prolific class of anachronistic historical series that\u2019s taken over TV as of late. \u201cThe Decameron\u201d shot on location outside Rome, and keeps the Italian names, but otherwise makes few pretenses to accuracy. Thankfully, the show also declines to stress its parallels with our more recent brush with germ-related isolation. The themes it traffics in \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> hierarchy, status anxiety, lust \u2014 are evergreen enough to stand on their own.
