\n Dan Aykroyd, one of the original Ghostbusters, is defending 2016\u2019s all-female reboot of\u00a0Ghostbusters<\/em>, which was met with racist and sexist criticism from online trolls following its debut.<\/p>\n

\n The actor and screenwriter, who starred as Dr. Ray Stantz in the 1984 movie as well as penned the script<\/a>, opened up in a recent interview with People<\/a><\/em> about his appreciation for the entire<\/em> franchise, including the Paul Feig-directed installment starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.<\/p>\n

\n \u201cI liked the movie Paul Feig\u00a0made with those spectacular women,\u201d Aykroyd said. \u201cI was mad at them at the time because I was supposed to be a producer on there and I didn\u2019t do my job and I didn\u2019t argue about costs.\u00a0And it cost perhaps more than it should, and they all do. All these movies<\/a> do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cBut boy, I liked that film,\u201d the Saturday Night Live<\/em> alum continued. \u201cI thought that the villain at the end was great. I loved so much of it. And of course,\u00a0Kate McKinnon\u00a0and\u00a0Leslie Jones\u00a0and\u00a0Melissa McCarthy\u00a0and\u00a0Kristen Wiig, you\u2019re never going to do better than that. So I go on the record as saying I\u2019m so proud to have been able to license that movie and have a hand and have a part in it, and I\u2019m fully supportive of it, and I don\u2019t besmirch it at all. I think it works really great amongst all the ones that have been made.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n The cast of the 2016 reboot have previously spoken out about the hateful comments they received, including McCarthy and Jones. The latter recalled the \u201conline abuse\u201d in her memoir, Leslie F*cking Jones<\/em>, last year, saying she \u201cgot taken through the ringer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n \u201cWhy are people being so evil to each other? How can you sit and type \u2018I want to kill you.\u2019 Who does that?\u201d Jones added in her memoir. \u201cSad keyboard warriors living in their mother\u2019s basements hated the fact that this hallowed work of perfect art now featured \u2014 gasp! horror! \u2014 women in the lead roles. Worst of all, of course, was that one of the lead characters was a Black woman. For some men this was the final straw.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n At the time, the Coming 2 America<\/em> star also slammed Jason Reitman, the director of 2021\u2019s Ghostbusters: Afterlife<\/em>, for saying he was \u201cnot making the\u00a0Juno<\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0Ghostbusters\u00a0<\/em>movies\u201d and was \u201ctrying to go back to original technique and hand the movie back to the fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Though Reitman later clarified<\/a> that his comments \u201ccame out wrong,\u201d Jones wrote in her memoir that \u201cthe damage was done.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
