Companies may migrate because they\u2019re rebranding, going to the cloud to scale their site easier or numerous other reasons.<\/p>\n<p>However, while migration may seem simple on paper, one misstep can lead to SEO problems, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>404 errors.<\/li>\n<li>Lost rankings.<\/li>\n<li>Missing content.<\/li>\n<li>Lost revenue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before beginning your migration, you\u2019ll want to run a site crawler to inventory your pages. The goal is to have a list of all pages that you can refer to when the migration is complete to verify that everything is migrated correctly.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll also want to identify when your site traffic is highest so you can avoid performing a migration during these hours. Once you\u2019re ready, it\u2019s time to move on to the first part of your planning stage.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-communication-plan\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Communication_plan\"><\/span>Communication plan<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I see most guides go right into the pre-migration phase, and while this may be fine if you\u2019re a one-person owner, it\u2019s <strong>not<\/strong> OK when multiple stakeholders are involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A basic communication plan is necessary, and it should include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Internal communication and insights into the migration, when it will occur, who it will impact and what team members may assist you.<\/li>\n<li>External communication to alert clients and customers of the migration and potential downtime that may occur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Make sure everyone knows what\u2019s going on to avoid any critical issues that can disrupt the migration or someone else\u2019s work in the organization.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pre-migration-planning\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pre-migration_planning\"><\/span>Pre-migration planning<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Screaming Frog is a great tool to help with collecting data on your site before the migration, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Comparing crawls.<\/li>\n<li>Staging.<\/li>\n<li>URL m<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But you\u2019ll need more data than this. You\u2019ll also want to gather a list of your rankings before and after the migration. Ahrefs and Semrush allow you to easily track and export your keywords.<\/p>\n<p>You can \u2013 and should \u2013 create an annotation inside your Google Analytics to mark the pre<em>\u2013<\/em>migration data so that you can refer to it when you\u2019re done with the site migration.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve created your list, you\u2019re ready to move on. The following are 11 steps that will help you successfully migrate your website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caution<\/strong>: Do not delete your old site. The key to site migration success is creating lists and reviewing them multiple times.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-4-run-benchmarks\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_4_Run_benchmarks\"><\/span>Step 4: Run benchmarks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Benchmarks are going to tell you a lot about your migration and site. From a technical SEO standpoint, you\u2019ll want to view the following data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Page load speed.<\/li>\n<li>Page indexing rates.<\/li>\n<li>Crawl errors.<\/li>\n<li>Keyword rankings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You\u2019ll be returning to these benchmarks multiple times over the coming weeks. If you notice that the site speed is slow or you lost rankings, you\u2019ll want to look through your site more to pinpoint the issue.<\/p>\n<p>If you have this data available, you\u2019ll also have something to show your client (if you\u2019re working with one) that can highlight the success of the benchmark.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-technical-seo-benchmarks\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Technical_SEO_benchmarks\"><\/span>Technical SEO benchmarks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You want your users to have an exceptional experience on your site. To achieve this, crawlability needs to remain high and speeds must also be monitored. A few of the tools that can help you with these are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mobile-friendliness<\/strong>: Sites need to be mobile-friendly. Analyze these pages to make sure that they\u2019re running properly. However, you will need to verify that you\u2019re the owner of both sites before submitting your change of address.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-9-run-usability-tests\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Step_9_Run_usability_tests\"><\/span>Step 9: Run usability tests<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Usability is one aspect of a site migration that people overlook. Your site may maintain its rankings, yet you\u2019ll lose revenue if usability diminishes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Manually testing key areas of your site is the next step, and these tests should be performed on mobile and desktop devices.<\/p>\n<p>Check the following areas to ensure that they\u2019re working properly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Downloadable content.<\/li>\n<li>Forms.<\/li>\n<li>Full checkout process.<\/li>\n<li>Live chat function.<\/li>\n<li>Mailing lists.<\/li>\n<li>Navigation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You want to ensure that all of your site\u2019s features run properly.
