Freezing art students and punks lined up outside of Market Hotel, an all-ages venue in Brooklyn; on the inside, it felt like a squat where someone had pushed the couches to the side to create a stage in the middle of the living room. We were just over a year into the Trump presidency, when shock and fear had given way to anger; Show Me The Body, with their fearsome brand of \u201cecclesiastical punk,\u201d was constructing a way forward, with poorly ventilated spaces like this one serving as the threshold.<\/p>\n<p>            Unlike many cultural forces from that era of shock and confusion, Show Me The Body have thrived. Because at the center of Show Me The Body lies a dedication to community and self-empowerment: Vocalist and banjo player Julian Cashwan Pratt, bassist Harlan Steed, and drummer Jackie Jackieboy (who joined the band in 2021 for the EP <i>Survive<\/i>) are also founders of Corpus NYC, the band\u2019s all-encompassing collective built on the tenants of mutual aid, creativity, and self-defense. <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262936\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Show Me The Body - It Burns\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hx8KAq7uIW8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('262936');\n<\/script><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262935\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262927\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            \u201cWe move with militancy and love,\u201d the band told The FADER in 2022. &#8220;Our goal is to spread love, but in order to do anything well you must take it seriously and work very hard. Plus, we are not hippies, if you know what I mean.\u201d The three coffins that have become the band\u2019s symbol, the ones dedicated fans have tattooed on their bodies, aren\u2019t just an aesthetic: at their best, you get the sense that Show Me The Body really would die for this shit. <\/p>\n<p>            The trio taps that intensity to a new degree on <i>Corpus II EP I<\/i>, a collection of six songs released without warning last Friday. It is the second time the band has named a project for their collective after 2017\u2019s <i>Corpus<\/i>, which packed together underground stalwarts like Moor Mother, Eartheater, and Dreamcrusher, never hesitating to enter their specific worlds when it felt natural to do so. The album was dotted with manifestos like its incendiary fascist-smashing hardcore closer \u201cProud Boys,\u201d but its priority was rubbing shoulders and sharing sweat rather than leftist theory.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262937\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left video\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top: 56.25%;\">\n<p>    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nation of Mind\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aw0ohT8xoI0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n \/\/trackYouTubeVideo('262937');\n<\/script><\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-262928\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            The brevity of <i>Corpus II<\/i> works to its advantage, better highlighting the individual strength of each contributing artist. Zulu \u2014 the Black hardcore band behind <i>A New Tomorrow<\/i>, one of 2023\u2019s best albums \u2014 construct a brilliant and bruising utopia on \u201cNation of Mind,\u201d a place \u201csafe from the cops\u201d and where bloodied knuckles have time to heal. Hip-hop gets airtime, too: the wails of revolutionary underground noise-rap artist B L A C K I E on \u201cCREEP\u201d bring a flayed urgency to the distorted, bass-heavy track. And \u201cFishes To Fry\u201d demonstrates a new, industrial dimension of N.Y.C. rap duo and recent GEN F stars YL &amp; Starker. The heaviest track on the whole tape comes at the end with \u201cWINGS WHEELS STEEL,\u201d a King Yosef-featuring stunner that veers into metal by way of Pharmakon-style abrasion.<\/p>\n<p>            There are only two tracks on <i>Corpus II<\/i> that do not feature any guests: the cyberviolence of \u201cIt Burns,\u201d and \u201cShelter,\u201d with its knotty avant-garde rap.
