Known as extended minimum crew operations (eMCO), the concept removes one pilot from the flight deck during an aircraft\u2019s cruise phase.<\/p>\n<p>Automation tech would take over their supporting role. The second pilot can then rest while their colleague stays at the controls.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/srrsbwkqwr?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is now evaluating the proposals. If the regulator <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roves eMCO, commercial planes could no longer require two people at the controls.<\/p>\n<p>Airbus enthusiastically backs the move. According to the French aviation giant, the changes could reduce crew fatigue and increase efficiencies. By transitioning towards one-pilot cockpits, they could also cut staff costs.<\/p>\n<p>The move has also been pitched as a step towards fully-autonomous planes.<\/p>\n<p>Pilots have slammed the plan.\u00a0The ECA describes it as a \u201cprofit-driven scheme\u201d with a \u201csignificant safety risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Captain Otjan de Bruijn, the union\u2019s president, said this is the first time\u00a0EASA has started a regulatory process without intending to solve a safety problem.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe safety of every airline flight starts with two well-trained, well-rested, professional pilots at the controls,\u201d de Bruijn told TNW. \u201cRemoving one pilot with the current technological level is a very dangerous gamble with safety.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>That technological level is his paramount concern.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Automating_pilots\"><\/span>Automating pilots<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Airbus and fellow French firm Dassault are spearheading the single-pilot push.<\/p>\n<p>Neither<span style=\"color: #000000;\"> business has<\/span> confirmed the automation they will use. But Airbus has at least offered a glimpse into the strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The company is developing eMCO for the A350 airliner. Flight crew can activate AED when cabin\u00a0pressure drops below a set limit or a pilot loses consciousness. The system will then<span> commence an emergency descent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By monitoring the pilot with a camera, the tool could automatically engage when problems arise.<\/p>\n<p>Several other systems are also being tested. One of them can automatically shut down an engine when there\u2019s a fire.\u00a0Another involves speech-to-text communication with air traffic control.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Airbus has pledged to prove these tools improve safety before rolling them out. But that has not allayed the concerns of pilots.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_call_for_caution\"><\/span>The call for caution<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The ECA says regulators are rushing to introduce the tech by 2027. D<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e Bruijn wants them to slow down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To illustrate the risks, he points to<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Boeing\u2019s beleaguered 737 MAX. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>plane was grounded in 2019 after two fatal crashes. Faulty software <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/04\/25\/1247123011\/boeing-crash-737-max-doj\">was blamed<\/a> for both disasters.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The airliner has since returned to service, but further incidents have followed. In January, a Boeing 737 MAX 9 lost a section of fuselage mid-flight. Pilots were forced to make an emergency landing.<\/p>\n<p>The string of controversies has spooked passengers. Even former<span>Boeing\u00a0managers have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/feb\/01\/boeing-manager-737-max\">refused to fly<\/a> on a 737 MAX.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Single-pilot planes also provoke anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>A whopping 89% of Australians would feel less safe boarding a flight with one pilot at the controls, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aipa.org.au\/news\/articles\/aipa\/23-11-10-passengers-reject-single-pilot-flights-new-polling\/\">a 2023 survey<\/a>. Some 83% of respondents said they would be more hesitant to book a ticket.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet automation isn\u2019t entirely opposed. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/snpl.com\/sondage-rco\/\">A poll<\/a> taken last year found that 60<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">% of French citizens believe the current systems provide planes with an essential safety layer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>D<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e Bruijn can also appreciate automation \u2014 but not if it prioritises profit over people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere needs to be very clear and transparent proof that new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> really improves flight safety,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t want to be the testbed.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
