Unfortunately, \u201cIn Our Blood\u201d does not capture that prize for 2024. Though a notch above the subgenre\u2019s norm in terms of acting and production polish, documentarian Pedro Kos\u2019 first narrative feature \u2014 in which two filmmakers investigate mysterious dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earances around Las Cruces, New Mexico \u2014 ultimately teases expectations too long en route to an underwhelming resolution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    With overt horror elements delayed until the last 20 minutes or so, the film ends up feeling like an attenuated prologue for a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> conceptual (if not budgetary) wheelhouse of \u201cBlade\u201d or \u201cUnderworld.\u201d But it\u2019s anyone\u2019s guess whether this Fantasia premiere will spark the kind of enthusiasm that merits a single follow-up, let alone several.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Emily (Brittany O\u2019Grady) is driving to the southwest from Los Angeles with chatty, genial cameraman Danny (E.J. Bonilla). She\u2019s hired him to film the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> for its personal importance and dramatic potential, since they\u2019ll be visiting the mother she was separated from at age 13, and hasn\u2019t seen in a decade. Emily says ex-addict Samantha (Alanna Ubach) is \u201cnot a bad person, she just made a lot of bad choices and hurt a lot of people.\u201d (Danny, too, has maternal wounds \u2014 his mother got deported when he was a child.) So it\u2019s an awkward reunion, with Sam \u201cwanting to make it right\u201d with her skeptical daughter, proving that she\u2019s now clean and duly employed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    Her job is at the Hooper Center, a community organization with a \u201ccampus of nonprofits \u2026 for the unhoused and vulnerable populations\u201d of this desert county. The visiting duo interview residents who have been beneficiaries of its programs, including drug rehab and treatment for mental health problems. But those conversations tend to bend towards whispered rumors of abductions and violence. Sam herself says a close friend recently went missing, then was found dead, adding, \u201cI know it could have been me instead of her.\u201d There\u2019s a vehement defensiveness to community members\u2019 reluctance to be filmed, despite permission granted by frostily composed chief administrator Ana (Krisha Fairchild).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    The newcomers\u2019 vague suspicions turn to alarm once Sam disappears, followed by other unsettling events \u2014 often accompanied by severed pig\u2019s heads and poisoned rats left behind at locations where our protagonists had previously spoken to locals. Clearly someone wants to scare them off from uncovering whatever dark hidden truth controls much of life (and death) hereabouts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    There\u2019s always an intriguing pull to narratives involving a cult, which is what we soon fear Hooper Center really is beneath its surface altruism. Our heroes are engaging enough, with a sometimes-testy dynamic that Mallory Westfall\u2019s screenplay keeps professional, with no hint of potential romance included or needed. Supporting figures (also including Bianca Comparato and Steven Klein as an area couple, plus Leo Marks as an unstable Center case) make promising first impressions they\u2019re seldom allowed to build on. Their number encompass actual residents of Camp Hope, a self-governing \u201ctransitional community\u201d for indigents in Las Cruces that gets thanked in the final credits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    But finally this fictive mystery doesn\u2019t say much about homelessness or anything else, wasting its offbeat setting on a supernatural denouement that boasts two major twists. One is disappointingly familiar in genre terms. The other adds a note of \u201cMatrix\u201d-like larger conspiracy that arrives too late, in too small-scaled a film, to have the jaw-dropping impact intended.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n    It doesn\u2019t help that while \u201cIn Our Blood\u201d is indeed bloody at times (primarily thanks to those decapitated hogs), and moves at a decent clip, Kos doesn\u2019t demonstrate any great knack for building an ominous atmosphere, or delivering scary sequences. Mostly shot in bright southwestern daylight, the movie keeps us interested, but fails to accrue much suspense. One suspects the filmmakers would have preferred to make a documentary about the tent city they made locational use of \u2014 because the horror opus they\u2019ve chosen to set there feels like a grudging commercial necessity rather than a fully developed imaginative commitment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
