That\u2019s what Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said in a new interview.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Reddit is blocking search engines.<\/strong> Noting it\u2019s been \u201ca real pain in the ass to block these companies,\u201d here\u2019s what else Huffman told <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> site <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/7\/31\/24210565\/reddit-microsoft-anthropic-perplexity-pay-ai-search\">The Verge<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWithout these agreements, we don\u2019t have any say or knowledge of how our data is displayed and what it\u2019s used for, which has put us in a position now of blocking folks who haven\u2019t been willing to come to terms with how we\u2019d like our data to be used or not used.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe\u2019ve had Microsoft, Anthropic, and Perplexity act as though all of the content on the internet is free for them to use. That\u2019s their real position.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI think the traditional value exchange from search engines has changed. Search and summarization and training are merging, and the value exchange of crawling in exchange for traffic back is becoming muddied.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Freeware.<\/strong> Yes, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman actually called web content \u201cfreeware,\u201d saying anybody can copy and use it:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c\u2026With respect to content that is already on the open web, the social contract of that content since the \u201990s has been that it is fair use. Anyone can copy it, recreate with it, reproduce with it. That has been freeware, if you like. That\u2019s been the understanding.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Google not blocked.<\/strong> Meanwhile, Reddit didn\u2019t block Google. That\u2019s because Google pays Reddit $60 million a year. That content licensing deal was announced in February. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Microsoft statement.<\/strong> Following the news about Reddit blocking search engines, a Microsoft spokesperson told Search Engine Land:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cMicrosoft respects the robots.txt standard and we honor the\u00a0directions provided by\u00a0websites that do not want content on their pages to be used with our generative AI models. Bing stopped crawling Reddit after they implemented their updated robots.txt file on July 1, which prohibits all crawling of their site<em>.<\/em>\u201c<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why we care.<\/strong> Reddit is in a powerful position, having a licensing deal with Google \u2013 not to mention the insane amount of organic visibility and traffic it\u2019s getting due to its prominence in Google Search results.
