A low-resolution spectre that haunts the video like Lavers\u2019s echoey air of quiet resentment on the track, McGrory was in the middle of filming when the man appeared out of nowhere and began referring to her as his \u201cbitch.\u201d The camera, still running, captured part of the confrontation, which Lavers later <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C5OaLRQObyS\/?igsh=ZTluN2Fsa3NocGx3&amp;img_index=2\">shared<\/a> on Instagram in a post promoting the release show for his debut LP, <i>Your Day Will Come<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cGet out of here,\u201d the man says, no longer mumbling. He talks about the frightening encounter so nonchalantly, it\u2019s like we\u2019re still joking about the absurdity of an $18 Erewhon smoothie. Lavers then appears to notice the look of wide-eyed horror on my face and reassures me: \u201cIt was dark, but weirdly comical.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263132\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            A week later, the story comes up again while I\u2019m chatting with Lavers and McGrory over FaceTime. Both agree what happened was deeply unsettling, but that it was, and, still is, easier to think of it as \u201cfunny.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>            \u201cI do have a slightly cavalier attitude towards trauma,\u201d Lavers says, mentioning our subconscious \u201cavoidance\u201d of revisiting specific events. It\u2019ll always retain traces of that formative trauma, because that\u2019s just \u201cthe way memory actually works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            \u201cYou don&#8217;t revisit the file cabinet. You recreate what you know. So whenever you recreate it, it&#8217;s like a performance of it, and things get changed,\u201d he explains. Cobbled together from hand-clap drum loops, atmospheric MIDI presets, and staticky guitar samples, Lavers manipulated and rearranged simple riffs and chords in about a hundred different ways. Nothing is as it seems on <i>Your Day Will Come<\/i>. It\u2019s Lavers\u2019s take on Donald Fagen\u2019s concept of \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/expandingdan.substack.com\/p\/fake-jazz-mix-donald-fagen\">fake jazz<\/a>,\u201d or the distinction between commercial knock-offs of what\u2019s considered \u201creal genre\u201d work. <\/p>\n<p>            A philosophy that gives Lavers plenty to play with in terms of aesthetics and style, it adds an uncanny edge to songs like \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chanelbeads.bandcamp.com\/track\/dedicated-to-the-world\">Dedicated to the World<\/a>,\u201d where manufactured pop arrangements are ripped apart and lose their candy-coated sheen, or \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chanelbeads.bandcamp.com\/track\/police-scanner-2\">Police Scanner<\/a>\u2019s\u201d synthetic indie folk, where live band member Zachary Paul turns an electric violin into a scraggly post-punk guitar or a country fiddle.  <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263148\" class=\"content_block breaker triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left pull_quote\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"pull_quote\"><p>\u201cA lot of the record is about examining yourself. I feel like I was really interested in saying things that felt ugly or petty to myself.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-263135\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            <i>Your Day Will Come<\/i> has an ephemeral quality to it between the voice notes-like lyrics and what Lavers refers to as the memory of \u201ca rock song, and how it sounds in your head.\u201d The end result is a record that sounds like a blurry refraction of every single song you\u2019ve heard in your life, accompanied by memories of some terrible hardcore show, or your dad listening to Bob Dylan, or the corny backing track for some \u201880s blockbuster. With every creative choice Lavers invokes a suspicious nostalgia that creates friction and confusion.
