Report Editor, Dashboards, and Saved Reports in the Google Ads web interface were down. On top of that Products, Product Groups and Listing Groups pages were down across the web interface, API, and Google Ads Editor.<\/p>\n<p>The glitch, which Google claims affected only \u201ca small fraction\u201d of advertisers, exposed sensitive data across accounts and disrupted normal reporting services.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisers had a lot to say about these issues varying from gratitude that they don\u2019t look after e-commerce and so were not affected to those who found the lack of listing\/product group data as a massive obstacle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-practical-challenges\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Practical_Challenges\"><\/span>Practical Challenges<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gregfinn\/\">Greg Finn<\/a>, Partner at Cypress North, highlighted the practical challenges: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe lack of listing\/product group data last week was a massive obstacle for those shopping advertisers. Specifically, we have some campaigns (PMax) that feature monthly deals and sale items for some clients and were unable to confirm that campaigns were working correctly.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWhile I understand that there was an error on Google\u2019s behalf, flying blind without seeing\u00a0<strong>any<\/strong>\u00a0product data is beyond scary. As an advertiser, I would much rather see a mistake and continue to work than to know that there is a mistake and have no way to view product data.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-data-usage-breach\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Data_usageBreach\"><\/span>Data usage\/Breach<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Paid Search Specialist, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sarahstemen\/\">Sarah Stemen<\/a>, raised questions about data usage in Google\u2019s auction system:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWell, we know Google knows prices of all products, profit margin, msrp, sales etc. But seeing the data cross contaminated makes me wonder if data is being leveraged in the auction more than Google will admit.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kate-luke-2bba63b1\/\">Kate Luke<\/a>, Head of Digital, emphasized the gravity of the data breach:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cLet\u2019s not gloss over the fact that this sensitive data is paramount to the businesses affected.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>She called for Google to \u201caddress those affected directly rather than deliver generic \u2018resolutions\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-transparency-timing\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"TransparencyTiming\"><\/span>Transparency\/Timing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Performance and marketing consultant, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/meriemnacer\/\">Meriem Nacer<\/a><strong> <\/strong>expressed concerns about Google\u2019s transparency:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cWill they notify affected brands and reimburse them, or only respond if contacted? Many might not check their accounts or know how to. How did this h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nacer also feels that due to timing, it can\u2019t be completely unrelated to the Merchant Center Next rollout \u2013<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThey claim it\u2019s unrelated to the Merchant Center Next rollout, but the timing coincides with updated PMax reporting and the upcoming migration. Is it just a coincidence, or did someone push that \u201cbig red button\u201d we\u2019ve always joked about? The situation raises many questions.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mikeryanretail\/\">Mike Ryan<\/a>, Head of ecommerc<strong>e,<\/strong> summed up the severity of the situation, with a particular concern that the issue began earlier than Google is claiming:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThis is a serious potential breach of advertiser confidentiality, and seemingly also a huge billing fuckup. Google maintains that these errors only occurred from July 30 through July 31, however I have team members who state that this may have been occurring for two weeks or longer.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-automation-feed-security\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"AutomationFeed_security\"><\/span>Automation\/Feed security<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/neptunemoon\/\">Julie Bacchini<\/a> president and founder, Neptune Moon pointed out the broader implications including automation &amp; questions the sanctity of the feed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cIt definitely raises some questions about firewalls between accounts though doesn\u2019t it? I think that is the most concerning piece.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cReporting and data lags happen. But data leaking is a much bigger issue. And taking it a step further, as automation takes over more and more, will we even know if something like this happens in the future?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe biggest issue I have is that it impacted feed based campaigns \u2013 so the sanctity of the feed is compromised. I would like a detailed explanation from Google Ads as to exactly how another advertiser\u2019s feed data was allowed to infiltrate another account. And what they have done to ensure it can no longer happen.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-competitive-intelligence\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Competitive_Intelligence\"><\/span>Competitive Intelligence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Marketing Director, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/scottfred\/\">Scott Frederickson<\/a> detailed the potential competitive intelligence leaked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cThe screenshots showing custom label content in the reports were chilling. For those who don\u2019t know, those labels are entirely free-form. I\u2019ve seen them used for margin bucketing, seasonality, stock controls, best sellers, various promotions, vendors, divisions, all kinds of things.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Finally advertisers like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/thomasdouglasr\/\">Reid Thomas<\/a>, Marketing Strategist,<strong> <\/strong>viewed the issue as \u201ca tempest in a teapot\u2026 because I have never had an account where a even a week of reports being inaccessible would massively change strategy, especially given that real data wasn\u2019t being blocked for automations, etc.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Majority of responses however indicated serious concerns about data privacy, competitive intelligence, and Google\u2019s handling of the situation.
